ANDERSON Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Connecticut, Box U-43, Storrs, CT 06269-3043 ABSTRACT.-The Miskitu are one of the three indigenous groups of eastern Nicaragua. Their uses of 353 species of plants in 262 genera and 89 families were documented in two years of fieldwork. Included are 310 species of medicinals, 95 species of food plants, and 127 species used for construction and crafts, dyes and tannins, firewood, and forage. Only 14 of 50 domesticated food species are native to the New World tropics, and only three to Mesoamerica. A majority of plant species used for purposes other than food or medicine are wild species native to eastern Nicaragua. Miskitu medicinal plants are used to treat more than 50 human ailments. Most (80%) of the medicinal plants are native to eastern Nicaragua, and two thirds have some bioactive principle. Many medicinal plants are herbs (40%) or trees (30%), and leaves are the most frequently used plant part. Herbal remedies are most often prepared as decoctions that are administered orally. The Miskitu people are undergoing rapid acculturation caused by immigration of outsiders. This study is important not only for documenting uses of plants for science in general, but also because it provides a written record in particular of the oral tradition of medicinal uses of plants of and for the Miskitu. Central American Cultures CENTRAL AMERICAN CULTURES: AN INTRODUCTION^ By Frederick Johnson Central America may be defined culturally as the region extending from the Atrato and San Juan River Valleys in Colombia nearly to the western boundary of Honduras (map 1). It has a fundamental unity in what may be a basic cultural tradition or cultural substructure. This basic culture has a distinctly South American cast, and the region marks the northern limit of culture complexes which were probably derived from South Amer- ica. The region has, however, been exposed to influences from the north- ern, that is, the Meso-American cultures. The continuing stream of cultural diffusion from both the north and south has produced a strong overlay of foreign elements which gives many local cultures a superficial similarity to those of neighboring regions. These tend to obscure the basic cultures. GEOGRAPHY The culture area of Central America is not coterminous with a geo- graphical province.^ Central America includes several portions of a larger geographic region which extends north to the "Great Scarp" of Oaxaca, Mexico, and south to the northern terminus of the Andes, the eastern slopes of the Atrato River Valley. -

Quarterly Climate Impacts Southern Region and Outlook September 2020 National — Significant Events for August and Summer, 2020 Highlights for the Region Temperatures hovered between slightly below normal to slightly above normal for much of the region, with the West experiencing above-normal temperatures. Precipitation varied spatially, with normal to above-normal precipitation in the East and Deep South and below-normal precipitation in the West. The main impacts this summer were those associated with two hurricanes and one tropical storm The average U.S. temperature for August was 74.7°F, 2.6°F above average, ranking third warmest in the 126- making landfall along the Gulf year record. The U.S. precipitation average for August was 2.35 in., 0.27 in. below average, ranking in the driest Coast. one-third of the historical record. The summer average U.S. temperature was 73.6°F, 2.2°F above average, ranking fourth warmest on record. The summer precipitation total was 7.99 in., 0.33 in. below average, ranking in the driest one-third of the record. Thursday's Focus Is on Hurricanes and Flooding
Florida’s Severe Weather Awareness Week takes place from February 1-5, 2021. Severe Weather Awareness Week is an opportunity for Floridians to learn about the various weather hazards that frequently impact the state and how families and businesses can prepare for these natural events. Each day focuses on a specific weather event. Thursday’s focus is on hurricanes and flooding. The most feared weather phenomenon throughout Florida during the summer and early fall is the tropical cyclone. Close to the tropics and surrounded on three sides by warm water, the unique location of Florida makes it particularly vulnerable to these systems as they develop across the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea. The relatively flat terrain of Florida can also make it susceptible to flooding. Florida has a long history of hurricanes. Records indicate that approximately 118 hurricanes and around 164 tropical storms have impacted the state since 1888 (133 years), with many more cited in history books prior to that year and even before official records were kept. DID YOU KNOW??? No other state in the country has more hurricane landfalls per year on average than Florida does. Nearly 40% of all hurricanes that strike the United States make landfall in Florida. DID YOU KNOW??? In the last 150 years, all of Florida’s counties have been impacted by at least one hurricane. The North Atlantic Ocean hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and continues through November 30. However, tropical systems can still form outside of hurricane season as early as May and as late as December. -

XXIV (1) 2008: 14-65) Introduction One of the popular mysteries of Honduran geography and history is the location of the colonial territory known as Taguzgalpa or a similar term. Perhaps the name has captured so much attention in Honduras because the word is so like that of the capital city, Tegucigalpa. While one place name refers to a known aboriginal and modern settlement and the other to an imprecisely delimited and little known territory in eastern Honduras, it remains undetermined whether the two terms are related or not. The fact is, according to 16th century rules of transcription, orthography, and perhaps etymology, the words are essentially the same. The sound difference is no more than between Z and S and CI and ÇI and these letters, like O and U, B and V, X and J, LL and Y, Y and I, and L and R were interchangeable in Spanish in early colonial Honduras (Nieto Segovia 1995: 18, 26, 30, 33, 44, 45, 49). Of course, there is the monumental problem that Ta-guz-gal-pa has four syllables and Te-gu-ci-gal-pa has five. On the other hand, we do not know how the words were pronounced in Honduras during the 16th century when they were first heard by the Spanish ear as relayed from indigenous translators.
