Kafkas Univ Vet Fak Derg, 24 (2): 219-226, 2018. DOI: 10.9775/kvfd.2017.18674 Abstract The aim of this study is to evaluate physical, haematological and biochemical changes in horses after acute exercise in a jereed game. Jereed is a traditional Turkish equestrian team sport. A total of 14 horses were included in this study. All horses were Arabian stallions aged between 4-14 years old. Respiration rate, heart rate, capillary refill time, mucous membrane and skin turgor (as an indicator for dehydration) were measured and blood samples were collected before the exercise (T0), immediately after first period (T1) and second period (T2), after 30 min (T3) and 60 min of recovery time (T4). Blood samples were analyzed for total cell counts and for determination of lactate, glucose, urea, total protein, albumin, globulin, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, chloride, sodium, potassium, creatinine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phospahatase.

The game played on horseback with this stick called cop is named particularly as ‘Egyptian Wood Game’. It is a traditional equestrian game in which competitors on horseback try to make the sticks, by hitting them on the ground, bounce over a thick rope connecting two poles with heights of 5-6 m and a distance of approximately 6-7 m in between. The Egyptian Wood Game played frequently in Ottoman period and in the 1960s in Turkey was no more practiced in Turkey for the last fifty years except a few locations in the West Anatolia. Significance: Almost every day, a traditional cultural element disappears also in Turkey which is among the countries deeply affected by the globalization of the world. This study was conducted because the scope of studies on these issues diminished and there were even no theoretical resources as sometimes there were no practical sources.

Abstract Folk sports are the countertype of modern sports: invented traditions, bolstered by tangible ritual and intangible myth, played by the common folk in order to express a romantic ethnic identity. Like other cultural forms, traditional sports and games around the world are becoming marginalized in the face of modernization and globalization. In 2003, UNESCO ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in an attempt to counter such trends of cultural homogenization. As elements of intangible cultural heritage, folk sports now fall under the auspices of UNESCO safeguarding policies.

  • Physical Culture in the Late Nineteenth Century and the Greek Philological Society of Constantinople Followed Suit in the Early Twentieth Century
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Strengthening Male Bodies and Building Robust Communities: Physical Culture in the Late Ottoman Empire A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Murat Cihan Yıldız 2015 © Copyright by Murat Cihan Yıldız 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Strengthening Male Bodies and Building Robust Communities: Physical Culture in the Late Ottoman Empire by Murat Cihan Yıldız Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor James L. Gelvin, Chair This dissertation examines the making of modernity in the late Ottoman Empire by tracing the connections between sports, the body, male subject formation, nation building, and communal and imperial identity. It focuses on the development of a shared Ottoman physical culture amongst upper and middle-class Muslim, Christian, and Jewish men of Istanbul from the 1870s until World War I. My research draws from a diverse array of archives and primary sources written in Ottoman-Turkish, Armenian, Armeno- Turkish, French, English, German, and Greek, such as government reports and documents, school and association records, private correspondence, periodicals, books, and pamphlets, as well as vernacular photographs, in order to present an alternative understanding of cultural transformations and the historical linkages between different ethno-religious communities of the late Ottoman Empire. The central argument of this ii dissertation is that Muslims, Christians, and Jews of Istanbul engaged sports as a shared civic activity that offered benefits for the individual, community, and empire. This study investigates how Ottoman physical culture was underpinned by novel understandings of the body and implicated in larger debates and processes concerning the self, gender, ethno-religious communal identity, and the nation by pursuing three principle areas of inquiry.
