f there is one current-day tenor saxophonist who is universally respected by jazz players and fans it’s Chris Potter. With monster chops and a strong knowledge of the entire spectrum of jazz, Potter has Iworked as a sideman with Dave Holland, Steely Dan and countless others as well as being a leader of his own groups. He’s out on tour right now with his so-called Underground band, which also hap- pens to be the name of his great if somewhat different new CD on Sunnyside. We caught up with him via phone at his home in New York City where he talks about what he’s doing and where the music is going. – Tad Hendrickson JazzWeek: Last time I talked to you, which is when the Lift album came out, you were already raving about the band on this album. Do you still feel the same way? Chris Potter: Yeah I do. I wanted to do this sort of nuts idea that a band without bass and with guitar, Fender Rhodes and drums, and I went out and did it. So there is something satisfying about that. Was there something more to it than the typical artis- tic stretch? I had this sound in my head and I sort of wasn’t sure how to get it. I experimented with different combinations and different ways of writing. That was actually the real rea- son for doing it, not just to do something different. This was just something I needed to do to move myself for- ward. There is a Radiohead cover and electric keyboards and guitars. Were you trying to bring the some of the Ra- diohead sound into your own thing? There is definitely a different aesthetic sensibility to the way Radiohead record and to a lot of modern pop mu- sic. Some of it has a lot of stuff going on, and it really just gives you a differ- ent feeling than if you are listening to Lester Young. nal context, which is extremely produced but in an interesting way. There is enough musical content there that you can bring something away from that and turn it into something else. I think that is a big reason why a few different jazz musicians are looking at their work, along with that of Bjork and handful of others. I don’t think the lack of bass leaves a hole. Right. That’s kind of a tribute to the way [keyboardist Craig] Taborn plays. And in the ways that we use guitar – sometimes Wayne would use his octave pedal. Adam Rogers is in the band now, but Craig and Adam sort of trade off This music has how they are going to cover things. It’s not that the bass range isn’t there; it’s been a lesson: if just articulated in a different way. First off, the guy comping is also playing the bass line, so there is a really tight hook-up because they each play both. And you do something the kinds of lines that are played on keyboard are just different. It’s just got its with substance, own thing. I like the way guitar and the keyboards work together. with some sort of If they are doing chords together it kind of has this rich polyphony. If they are thought and some playing contrapuntally, then it has this spiky or funky feel to it. It kind of is out of the same kind of ideas that are inspiring everyone else right now – Wayne “vision, you can Shorter’s quartet, all the music from the past. I don’t think that there is that radical of a break from the tradition with this band. There is different nuances actually get away and texture, but it’s part of the same thing. with a lot. Does it feel good to be out leading your own band again? Yeah I was really busy with Dave Holland and I went out with John Scofield’s trio all last summer as a guest. There were also various other things I wanted to do. But it’s really really nice to get out there and lead a band again. It’s just re- ally exciting when this band is working well, which we have been so far with this tour. How has the audience response been? Good. No one seems quite as shocked as I was worried that they might be. I guess people know by now. This music has been a lesson: if you do something with substance, with some sort of thought and some vision, you can actually get away with a lot. If you have some sort of focus you can stretch and be wide open with some real improvisation. Audiences don’t necessarily respond to mu- sic that is safe all the time. I’m sure that there are people who would prefer it to be safe, but they haven’t been the ones coming to the gigs. Really, you have to give audiences the benefit of the doubt. Because I believe if they are exposed to something different, they will for the most part go for it if it’s really really good. The hard part is getting it exposed. Luckily you can bring some atten- tion to it if people know who you are. I’m beginning to be in that situation, so it’s making it a little easier. That’s a good place to be. continued ... jazzweek.com • Feb. 20, 2006 JazzWeek 13 Artist Q&A: Chris Potter (continued)

But it’s also a responsibility I take seriously. I feel that I have to really think things through and make the music as good as I possibly can. You’re giving people more than just the standard issue. It’s really hard to do that. But it seems more important than ever to show what is possible to do with jazz music. How’s the band playing? Lately we’ve been getting into extremes. We play really loud or really soft sort of static ambient things. As long as neither one is overused, it can really make the music more interesting to have both. I think that everyone in the band is musi- cal enough to pick those spots. I guess it’s really moving forward. At this point we’ve played a lot of notes together. It’s one thing to be friends and familiar with each other’s music, but it’s anoth- er to play together night after night – that’s what makes it turn into a band. The cover photo was shot at the 55 Bar. How did the gig during IAJE go at the 55 Bar? It went great. That bar has been really helpful in putting this band together. I tried different con- figurations with bass or organ at that place. It was a low-pressure situation where we could just play Lourdes Delgado and see where the music wanted to go. In a way it’s more like the olden days. You could try differ- ent things because there was no pressure to fill the club for a week. Gigs were more of a laboratory. Any hints about what the next record will be like? I did this music at the New York’s Jazz Standard in May. It was a 10-piece band with violin, flute, cello, tuba, bassoon and nylon stringed guitar. It’s a lot more composed and has a different sound than the Underground band. I want to record that band, but I have no idea how we’ll go out on tour, logistically speaking. Plus, there is something to be said for going out with a small band – there is a lot of freedom to what you can do. I am hoping to do another CD with this band because, like I said, I have so much material. There’s a song on the album called “Nudnik.” What is a Nudnik? It’s a Yiddish word for someone is always hanging around and making com- ments that aren’t necessarily helpful. I named the tune that because I was hanging around Scott Colley a lot when I wrote it and he has a baby daughter named Nikka, and that’s what they would call her a lot of the time. JW
