“If we want security, let us give security; if we want life, let us give life; if we want opportunities, let us provide opportunities. The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick which time will use for us.” – Pope Francis

2 Message from Archbishop

As I reflect on 2019 I am reminded of the generous and giving spirit within you, our supporters. I thank and celebrate the thousands of people who contribute to the work we do and I am deeply grateful for your partnership with us. By investing where your heart is engaged, you are making a difference to so many.

This photo of Elsa and me at the Priests Foundation Mass always makes me smile. Her joy in giving and my pleasure in receiving such a lovingly crafted gift is evident. It is my heartfelt hope that you experience a similar happiness in the donations you make to support the good works of the Church.

In an environment where it is all too easy to negate and malign the good intentions of the faithful, it is equally important to lead by example, as you have done. With this Annual Report we celebrate the thousands of people who ensure families desperate for their children to have a Catholic education can access it through the Mary MacKillop Brisbane Catholic School Access Fund. Those faithful individuals who educate and form the future leaders of our Church through Holy Spirit Seminary. Those donors who have been loved and cared for by their parish priest, and now ensure that when our retired priests become frail, they have the care they need. And the donors who provide a safety net for vulnerable and marginalised people in our community through their support of Centacare.

My prayer is that you will continue to experience the presence and love of Christ in your heart and that you will be filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit.

As always in the Lord,

Most Rev Mark Coleridge Archbishop of Brisbane

6 A vocational calling unlike any other

“I guess I would be what is fondly called a ‘cradle Catholic.’ My parents are devout and traditional, and I can never thank them enough for the love and care they raised me with. Or for the love of the Church they instilled in me from a young age.”

For William Aupito Iuliano, the calling to priesthood was a gradual one. The seed was planted by Sister Doreen at his childhood parish, “a wonderful lady who saw something in me, and was always telling me that I was destined for the priesthood.” He was naturally drawn to a life of faith and service.

It was during his time at Canali House, where he was given a live-in experience of discernment that he truly became committed to the calling God placed in his heart. Now, nearing the end of his seminary formation, William knows his journey is just beginning.

“Father Frank reminds us that the true formator is the Holy Spirit, and that every step of our lives has been ordained by God. I am a bit fearful of what lies ahead, but I am also looking forward to being a leader and spiritual advisor to the people I am called to serve.”

Holy Spirit Seminary is the provincial seminary for and is dedicated to the theological and pastoral education and formation of our future priests. Your prayers and support make it possible for seminarians to take the Word to the world.

7 Your donation to the Mary MacKillop Brisbane Catholic School Access Fund provides an opportunity for children to be embraced by a supportive and caring Catholic community at a time when life at home is difficult.

“My sisters, brothers and I were brought up to believe that you look after others through actions, service or giving. As I have matured, I have connected this more closely with my faith – if I want a better world I have to do my bit.” Tricia

8 You help families through hardship into the light

Sarah and Joe were never wealthy but they always felt blessed to have each other, three beautiful children and the flexibility of working in their own business. When the business went bankrupt, it was a catalyst for the life they had so lovingly built to also collapse.

Joe recalls that time clearly. “Suddenly, we had no way to pay the mortgage or the car loan. We were letting bills go unpaid because our money had to go towards food and school uniforms. Sarah and I were constantly arguing and the children just seemed so lost. I got a job, but Sarah’s mental health spiralled out of control. Some days I was afraid to leave her home by herself.”

The support of the MacKillop Fund was critical to this family’s recovery. Sarah tells us: “My children would never have been blessed with this opportunity without the support of the MacKillop Bursary. I am grateful for this every day. It took years, but we’re back on our feet now. Moving forward, we will be paying the children’s school fees ourselves – we have been blessed continually beyond words.”

“To the donors who support the MacKillop Fund – ‘thank you’ will never be enough, but I hope it is a start in expressing our eternal gratitude.”

9 The transition from active work to retirement is a different experience for each of our priests – some welcoming the slower pace; others finding the change in their day-to-day ministry confronting after so many years immersed in parish life.

“We make our best efforts annually to support the Priests Foundation. We feel that it is a great privilege to have the opportunity to support those that have always selflessly served us with their ministry.” Dr and Mrs Wong

10 Providing care and support for priests in retirement

For most of the priests in our Archdiocese, the idea of stepping away from the communities and families they have looked after for years seems unfathomable. They continue their ministry well into their later years, and only slow down once illness forces them to.

Father Jim Browne is no exception. After retiring, he continues to say Mass on Russell and Macleay Islands every week, where he has been working in the community for more than 20 years. When he does venture into the city, Father Jim participates in the Conversations on Retirement Program, funded by the Priests Foundation. “One of the most valuable aspects of the program is the opportunity to talk to other retired priests and maintain a connection with them,” says Father Jim. Aimed at helping retired priests retain purpose and connection, many of our priests attend these sessions offered four times a year.

He expressed his gratitude for the support offered. “The generous donors and supporters in our Archdiocese look after us extremely well, in giving us a home and looking after our medical needs where required. This group is a blessing too, as it gives us purpose and a connection with people, each other and our ministry. There is a difference in the expectation of what retirement will be, and then the reality of it!”

Donors to the Priests Foundation also care for our retired priests in more tangible and immediate ways, by providing basic health care, accommodation, and nursing support to our elderly and frail priests when they need it most.

12 Our faith in action through Centacare

Centacare is the mission of the Church in action. With your gift, you help protect and promote the dignity of every person who comes to us for help, most especially those in our community who are vulnerable, marginalised or on the outskirts of society.

Donations to Centacare support families and individuals when their need is greatest. In times when they have nowhere else to turn, your support ensures that Centacare can provide the helping hand they need. This ministry offers counselling, parenting and marriage support programs, psychiatric pastoral care, and a safe place for victims of domestic and family violence. With your help, they are there for the people who need them in hospitals, prisons and ports.

Centacare’s support for the Archdiocese’s Indigenous community is less widely known, but no less profound. Through Murri Ministry, Centacare provides pastoral and spiritual help to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that is consistent with their Aboriginal culture and tradition. Their vision is expressed through the Gospel of Jesus, spirituality and culture, care and compassion, social justice, history, faith and action, effective teamwork and positive relationships with non-Indigenous people.

With your generous support, Centacare provides help and hope to transform lives and enrich communities.

14 Feeding Brisbane’s homeless community

Fifteen years ago a group of committed Catholics recognised a need within our Archdiocese and were determined to do something to help. They reached out to the streets of Brisbane - providing sustenance and care to the homeless and disadvantaged.

Today, Emmanuel City Mission operates as a sanctuary in South Brisbane - a space in which each person is loved through action and respect. People can eat, sleep, converse, meet other people, wash their clothes, have a shower, groom, be safe – out of the weather and out of trouble. Here they can participate in prayer, worship, and the Sacraments.

With the support of donors to the Annual Grants Program, the Emmanuel City Mission food program has blossomed – and the cooking is good! The number of meals has more than tripled, with an almost 70 percent increase in people sharing a meal at lunchtime.

“Emmanuel City Mission is a front-line Catholic ministry. It is a space where people from parishes, schools and the wider Catholic community can express faith in action while engaging in meaningful faith encounters and atmospheres of worship.” (Roby Curtis, Director Emmanuel City Mission)

15 A gift in our Will can be seen as leaving a legacy – or as an investment in the future. Giving the ones we love a gift of faith and peace.

Tony Micallef, groundskeeper and donor to Holy Spirit Seminary.

Including the Church in your Will

Your Will is a gesture of the love you have for your family, community and your Church. After providing for your loved ones, leaving a gift in your Will is a significant way to support a cause that is meaningful to you and a reflection of your gratitude, faith and values.

16 A gift of faith through a gift in your Will

When Tony Micallef first started working at Holy Spirit Seminary as groundskeeper, he immediately felt at home. He was surprised that he liked the place straight away, having been a farmer all his life. Of course, as a farmer, he quickly recognised that there was good soil and great opportunities to expand his duties and supplement the diet of seminarians and staff.

Tony says, “I was an altar boy in my Church in Malta for almost ten years. My mum would wake me up at 5:00am one week to serve at the church, and 6:30am the following week to volunteer at the hospital. I swapped this around with my brother, so that there was always someone to help. The church and charity have always been important in our lives.”

Decades later, Tony is still driven to give back. By observing the growth of the young men in formation at Holy Spirit Seminary, and seeing the impact others make through their donations, Tony and his wife Grace are moved to do the same.

“When we prepared our Will we made sure the children were taken care of, then we included a gift to the Seminary. If we don’t have priests there will be no Church, so we have to do what we can to help where it is needed. Our greatest hope for our donation is that it will help ensure that we have more priests. So that people can remember God at every stage of their lives, not just when life is bad.”

17 An endowment within the Catholic Foundation creates a unique partnership between donors and the area they are passionate about. It allows them the opportunity to realise their philanthropic vision, and designate their support to the areas closest to their hearts.

Tilly, Lilly and Leela from St John Fisher College.

18 Students paving the way for future diversity

The St John Fisher College Endowment was established in 2019 by three Year 9 girls at the school. Tilly, Lilly, and Leela recognised the importance of a diverse student cohort and were determined to do what they could to expand the support already offered by the school.

“Our vision is for our school to create a bursary that provides not only a valuable education for young women but also benefits and diversifies the Fisher community. With a bursary, funds are awarded to those who cannot afford to pay full fees but, unlike a scholarship, it is not based on performance. We passionately feel that the St John Fisher College community should directly assist the underprivileged. This will provide an opportunity to live out our Catholic responsibility of supporting families who are struggling financially.”

Most endowments start small but, with prudent investment and care, grow to support major areas of ministry. New endowments can be created and named in a family’s or school’s honour, or in memory of a loved one – they are a perpetual gift to support vital works within the Church and wider community.

The St John Fisher girls said, “To start the endowment, we were aiming to fund one student for six years, however, our vision has grown to work towards our goal of sustainable funding. We are excited to be part of the positive growth of our community.” How endowments grow and fund good works for generations.

Your enduring generosity to support our faith

Named after Queensland’s first , this medal is awarded to a handful of people across the Archdiocese of Brisbane each year. In 2019, the Lutvey family of Gayndah received the medal for their incredible support spanning not only decades, but generations.

Over several generations, almost 40 parish priests who stayed in Gayndah were supported and cared for by the Lutvey family. Raschid Lutvey said, “I have no doubt my grandfather, Russia Lutvey, was there to help with the opening of St Joseph’s Church which was dedicated on April 18, 1915, by Archbishop .”

Father Adrian Farrelly, who was the parish priest in Gayndah in 1979 has fond recollections of the family’s hospitality, the meals served and the dedication to one of Queensland’s oldest parishes. The Quinn medal, presented to Jan, Wendy, Eva and Richy Lutvey by Archbishop Mark Coleridge, recognises their generous support going back as far as 1987.

Father Adrian said: “I thank and pray for all those country folk whose charity, compassion and unwavering encouragement strengthen the Catholic Church and its mission.”

Recipients of the Quinn Medal inspire and enliven our parishes with their faith and enduring support. Every gift you make to the ministries of the Church enables God’s work in and around us.

22 Living Faith Society donors Sumali and Canisius James. With your regular gift you empower the work of the Church

The Living Faith Society is a group of dedicated and loyal donors who make monthly or quarterly donations to the cause they care about most. Donors like Canisius and Sumali James, who feel strongly that as Catholics they must always do their part in looking after our retired priests and our seminarians.

“I am eternally grateful for our retired priests as they have already served us throughout their lives, for our salvation, by becoming co-redeemers of Jesus. At the same time, with a grateful heart, I pray for all the young lives who have already been touched by God’s grace and have responded to His calling. As they are discerning a path to priesthood to become living witnesses to Jesus, surely they need enormous help and prayers from the Catholic community.”

Our Church Our Mission Our Community

Your gift is the answer to someone’s prayer

The Annual Catholic Campaign raised a record total of $1,255,272 in support of vital Catholic ministries and services across the Archdiocese of Brisbane. The support of thousands of parishioners, scholars, teachers and donors is testament to your incredible goodwill and generosity.

Local parishes, communities and schools held special collections on the Campaign weekend in September, and gave more than 5,150 gifts to raise much-needed funds to support our most vulnerable neighbours, care for elderly, retired and unwell priests, provide seminarians with an education, and deliver Catholic school bursaries for children whose families are experiencing severe financial hardship.

The work of these ministries would be impossible without the generosity of our extended Catholic family - thank you to the Annual Catholic Campaign Ambassadors, parish priests, parish staff and all who generously gave in support of the Campaign.
