  • Everyman, All at Once Formatted 4.10.18
Ben Phelan Brigham Young University, United States Everyman, All at Once Baptism and the Liberal Subject in BioShock Infinite Even as liberalism has penetrated nearly every nation on earth, its vision of human liberty seems increasingly to be a taunt rather than a promise. —Patrick J. Deneen, Why Liberalism Failed Abstract The 2013 video game BioShock Infinite stages baptism as a way to place the player within a liminal space where he or she is ostensibly a free subject, able to choose from an array of political options, but who will inevitably choose liberalism. In order to get the player to the point where they make—or rather confirm—their choice, the game must also force the player to arrive there. This conundrum mirrors the paradox of liberalism, following theorists like Patrick J. Deneen: that we supposedly choose among a realm of infinite possibly and yet those possibilities are forced upon us. This paradox is also the mode within which BioShock Infinite operates. The game uses self-referential and metatextual techniques to call attention to its gameness, and yet, it still asks the player to accept its liberal ideology. Althusser argues that the role of “Ideological State Apparatuses” (or ISAs) is to convince us that we are subjects who freely choose the dominant ideology, as opposed to any other system. ISAs do this through confirming us as subjects through rituals of ideological recognition enacted through, among other things, theatre, film, and video games. BioShock Infinite places the player in a position where they confirm that they are, indeed, a liberal subject, and then asks that liberal subject to choose the very order from which their (mis)recognition occurs.

  • What Makes a Trophy Hunter? an Empirical Analysis of Reddit Discussions

An empirical analysis of Reddit discussions Chien Lu1, Jaakko Peltonen1, Timo Nummenmaa1, Xiaozhou Li1, and Zheying Zhang 1 Tampere University, Kalevantie 4, 33100 Tampere, Finland Abstract. In this paper, an empirical data-driven analysis of online discussions of meta-game reward systems is carried out. The data is collected from one of the biggest online discussion forums called Reddit and a text-mining technique called topic modeling is employed. Over 46000 discussion threads from the two most relevant subreddits /r/xboxachievements and /r/Trophies are analyzed and the results of topic modeling shows not only interesting topics but also the (dis)similarity between two text sources the temporal trends of topics. We have found that the volume of related discussions shows an ongoing trend. The topic model results have also revealed that some game genres are more prevalent than others and the (dis)similarities between text sources have been also discovered. Keywords: trophy hunting, Reddit, topic modeling 1 Introduction It has been noted that games can also be gamified [10], which has attracted research- ers’ attention [9,14]. Early work on applying badge systems to non-game contexts have also used game achievement systems as a source of inspiration [19]. One of the gamification design implementations is a meta-game reward system, which awards visual indicators for completion of tasks and acts as an overarching game in which players obtain rewards through playing across different games [5].

Martin Pichlmair durch Marc-Oliver Marschner Arndtstrasse 60/5a, A-1120 WIEN 01.02.2008 Abstract The goal of this document is to establish a foundation for the creation of music-based computer and video games. The first part is intended to give an overview of sound in video and computer games. It starts with a summary of the history of game sound, beginning with the arguably first documented game, Tennis for Two, and leading up to current developments in the field. Next I present a short introduction to audio, including descriptions of the basic properties of sound waves, as well as of the special characteristics of digital audio. I continue with a presentation of the possibilities of storing digital audio and a summary of the methods used to play back sound with an emphasis on the recreation of realistic environments and the positioning of sound sources in three dimensional space. The chapter is concluded with an overview of possible categorizations of game audio including a method to differentiate between music-based games.

  • The Impact of Multichannel Game Audio on the Quality of Player Experience and In-Game Performance
The Impact of Multichannel Game Audio on the Quality of Player Experience and In-game Performance Joseph David Rees-Jones PhD UNIVERSITY OF YORK Electronic Engineering July 2018 2 Abstract Multichannel audio is a term used in reference to a collection of techniques designed to present sound to a listener from all directions. This can be done either over a collection of loudspeakers surrounding the listener, or over a pair of headphones by virtualising sound sources at specific positions. The most popular commercial example is surround-sound, a technique whereby sounds that make up an auditory scene are divided among a defined group of audio channels and played back over an array of loudspeakers. Interactive video games are well suited to this kind of audio presentation, due to the way in which in-game sounds react dynamically to player actions. Employing multichannel game audio gives the potential of immersive and enveloping soundscapes whilst also adding possible tactical advantages. However, it is unclear as to whether these factors actually impact a player’s overall experience. There is a general consensus in the wider gaming community that surround-sound audio is beneficial for gameplay but there is very little academic work to back this up. It is therefore important to investigate empirically how players react to multichannel game audio, and hence the main motivation for this thesis. The aim was to find if a surround-sound system can outperform other systems with fewer audio channels (like mono and stereo). This was done by performing listening tests that assessed the perceived spatial sound quality and preferences towards some commonly used multichannel systems for game audio playback over both loudspeakers and headphones.
