Grizzly Bear Scientific Name: Ursus arctos Species Code: M-URAR Status: Blue-listed Distribution • Provincial Range Grizzly bears are distributed throughout most of the mainland of the province. They are absent from Vancouver Island, the Queen Charlotte Islands and outer coastal islands. They occur in all biogeoclimatic zones in the province, except the Coastal Douglas Fir zone (CDF). They utilize a wide variety of habitats ranging from coastal estuaries to alpine meadows. • Elevational Range: Sea-Level to Alpine • Provincial Context Grizzly bears are most abundant in the coastal ecosystems and in areas in the southern Rocky Mountains (Flathead area and Glacier National Park). The current population estimate for grizzly bears in British Columbia is approximately 13,000 (Fuhr and Demarchi 1990). • Range in Project Area: Ecoprovince: Southern Interior Mountains Ecoregions: Columbia Mountains and Highlands, Southern Rocky Mountain Trench, Western Continental Ranges Ecosections: Eastern Purcell Mountains, East Kootenay Trench, Southern Park Ranges Biogeoclimatic Zones: IDFdm2; MSdk; ESSFdk, ESSFdku; ESSFdkp; ESSFwm; AT Ecology and Key Habitat Requirements Habitat use by grizzly bears is influenced primarily by food availability, the presence of suitable resting, denning and mating sites, the presence of other bears and by human development. They are very adaptable and inhabit a wide variety of habitat types from coastal coniferous forests through boreal forests to alpine/subalpine meadows and alpine tundra. Grizzly bears are omnivorous and opportunistic in their feeding habits. In late spring and early summer, the bulk of their diet is green leafy material. They will also feed on insects, fruits, berries, fish, carrion and small and large mammals. -

Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

Well-known plants in each angiosperm order This list is generally from least evolved (most ancient) to most evolved (most modern). (I’m not sure if this applies for Eudicots; I’m listing them in the same order as APG II.) The first few plants are mostly primitive pond and aquarium plants. Next is Illicium (anise tree) from Austrobaileyales, then the magnoliids (Canellales thru Piperales), then monocots (Acorales through Zingiberales), and finally eudicots (Buxales through Dipsacales). The plants before the eudicots in this list are considered basal angiosperms. This list focuses only on angiosperms and does not look at earlier plants such as mosses, ferns, and conifers. NATIVE PLANT FIELD GUIDE Revised March 2012 Hansen's Northwest Native Plant Database www.nwplants.com Foreword Once upon a time, there was a very kind older gentleman who loved native plants. He lived in the Pacific northwest, so plants from this area were his focus. As a young lad, his grandfather showed him flowers and bushes and trees, the sweet taste of huckleberries and strawberries, the smell of Giant Sequoias, Incense Cedars, Junipers, pines and fir trees. He saw hummingbirds poking Honeysuckles and Columbines. He wandered the woods and discovered trillium. When he grew up, he still loved native plants--they were his passion. He built a garden of natives and then built a nursery so he could grow lots of plants and teach gardeners about them. He knew that alien plants and hybrids did not usually live peacefully with natives. In fact, most of them are fierce enemies, not well behaved, indeed, they crowd out and overtake natives. He wanted to share his information so he built a website. It had a front page, a page of plants on sale, and a page on how to plant natives. But he wanted more, lots more. So he asked for help. I volunteered and he began describing what he wanted his website to do, what it should look like, what it should say. He shared with me his dream of making his website so full of information, so inspiring, so educational that it would be the most important source of native plant lore on the internet, serving the entire world. -

The purpose of the guide is to provide the necessary information about variety selection, planting requirements, and plant care that growers will need to make informed decisions. This guide will look at blackcurrants, red currants (including white and pink, which are of the same species as reds), and gooseberries. While not all varieties are included in this guide, we cover those that seem to have the most potential for the North American market. Common varieties such as Pixwell, Oregon Champion, Colossal (gooseberries), Consort, Ben Nevis, Crandall, Ben Lomond, Ben Alder (black currants) have been surpassed by the introduction of varieties that combine higher yields, better disease resistance and superior fruit qualities. In future editions of this guide we will discuss new and relevant varieties as they are made available, as well as updated information on yields, pests, and information from the plant trials that will be taking place across North America. -

This document serves as a data dictionary for the existing vegetation, historical vegetation, and potential natural vegetation databases, as described below: • Interpretation of aerial photography acquired in 1995, 1996, and 1997 was used to characterize existing (current) conditions. The 1996 and 1997 photography was obtained after cessation of the Bull and Summit wildfires in order to characterize post-fire conditions. The database name is: 97veg. • Interpretation of late-1930s and early-1940s photography was used to characterize historical conditions. The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Almost half of the remaining old growth redwood forests Blechnaceae – Deer Fern Family are protected in these four parks. -
