CUNY Athletic Conference 2002-03 Year In Review MEN’S 38th Annual CUNYAC / Con Edison Championships CCNY BEATS BARUCH, 84-79 IN FINAL NEW YORK, NY – Second-seeded City College of New York outscored the host and number one seed, Baruch College, by a slim 19-16 margin in the TOURNAMENT final four minutes to post an 84-79 victory in the Men’s Final of the 38th Annual CUNYAC / Con Edison Basketball Championships. MVP After falling behind 6-4 at the 18:26 mark of the first half, the Beavers DANA went on a 14-3 run over the next five minutes to take an 18-9 advantage. They would not relinquish that lead for the remainder of the game against WARNER the host Bearcats. “This game is a great start for us and we hope to continue it in the NCAA Tournament,” said senior guard Dana Warner (New York, NY), who was named CUNY Tournament MVP. 2003 CUNY/NJAC ALL-SENIOR CHALLENGE 2002-03 INDIVIDUAL ACCOLADES NJAC SENIORS SLIP PAST CUNY SENIORS, 124-122 Met Writers DIII Upper Montclair, NJ - In the 3rd Annual CUNYAC / NJAC Senior All-Star Challenge, played 8 at Montclair State University, the NJAC men’s seniors slipped past the CUNYAC team 124- First Team All-Star 122, to take a 2-1 series winning for the second straight season. 8 ECAC Metro Edwin Caceres (Queens, NY) of CCNY was chosen as the MVP of the CUNYAC 2nd Team All-Star squad after finishing with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the CUNYAC team, which squan- dered the lead with 7:42 to play in the game. Edgar Lugo (Bronx, NY) of Lehman led all 8 D3 Hoops.com scorers with 25 points as the CUNYAC placed six players in double-figures. Richard Stock- 2nd Team All-Star ton guard Jorge Arroyo posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to grab the Most Valuable Player award for the NJAC Team. The NJAC, which won last year’s game 115-113 at College of Staten Island, rallied from a nine-point deficit midway through the fourth period. In the fourth quarter, CUNYAC took 103-94 lead as Lugo buried a three-pointer from 8 D3 Hoops.com the right side, however, the NJAC Team chipped away at the deficit. Kevin Stokes of Ramapo First Team All-Star hit a free throw to cut the lead to five and a Stokes layup brought NJAC within 108-104 with Met Writers DIII 5:22 left. Medgar Evers Rhasheen Perry (Brooklyn, NY) hit a foul shot to restore the lead to 8 five, but the NJAC scored the next 10 points to take the lead for good. Tennyson Whitted of 2nd Team All-Star Ramapo hit two free throws to make the score 109-106 and The College of New Jersey’s 8 ECAC Metro Gyl Vaught sank a three to tie the game. The NJAC then took the lead as Joseph Thomas Honorable Mention of Montclair State scored five straight points for a 114-109 lead with 3:30 to play. CUNYAC would tie the game one last time at 117-117 with 58 seconds left as EDWIN CACERES • CITY COLLEGE Caceres scored on a layup. But Thomas hit three foul shots to give the NJAC the lead for good and Arroyo made a fast-break layup for a 122-117 NJAC lead with 25 seconds to go. John Alesi (Staten Island, NY) of Baruch hit an off-balance three with 15 seconds left to make the score 122-120, but Whitted iced the game for the NJAC with two fouls shots with 8 Met Writers DIII 10 seconds left.
