OUR MISSION We, the Catholic Church of San Francisco, in a communion of faith and charity with the successor of Peter, reach out and receive with welcoming arms all of God’s people: the saint and the sinner; the young and the elderly; the poor and the rich; the immigrant and the native; the lost sheep and those still searching. At this unique moment, as we stand at the crossroad leading to the Third Millennium we recognize ourselves as pilgrim people called by God and empowered by the Spirit to be disciples of Jesus Christ. We pledge ourselves to be a dynamic and collaborative community of faith known for its quality of leadership, its celebration of the Eucharist, its proclamation of the Good News, its service to all in need and its promotion of justice, life and peace. Rich in diversity of culture and peoples and united in faith, hope and love we dedicate ourselves to the glory of God. In this our mission we each day seek holiness and one day heaven. A Journey of Hope Toward the Third Millennium, The Pastoral Plan of the Pilgrim Church of San Francisco. December 1995 PRAYER OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, when you appeared in Fatima 100 years ago, you desired that the Church should take refuge in your Immaculate Heart as a means that leads to Jesus, who is the way to the Father. Heeding your call, we entrust ourselves, our families, and our Archdiocese to the care and protection of your Immaculate Heart. As we prepare ourselves, through humble expressions of devotion, for the Consecration of our Archdiocese to your Immaculate Heart, inspire in us the longing to know, love, and follow your beloved son Jesus Christ. We seek that you help us imitate your spirit of generosity in doing God’s will and your example of serving others selflessly so that, having found God’s abundant grace here on earth, we may one day be led to the everlasting joys in Heaven. Amen. 8 ARCHDIOCESE OF SAn FRANCISCO City of San FRANCISCO www.sfarch.org (aka www.sfarchdiocese.org) Archbishops of San Francisco Titles and Statistics 1840-1846 Francisco Garcia Diego y Morano Established: July 29, 1853 1st Bishop of Ambas Californias 1853-1884 Most Rev. The Catholic Voice is on Facebook VOL. 57, NO. 11 DIOCESE OF OAKLAND JUNE 10, 2019 www.catholicvoiceoakland.org Serving the East Bay Catholic Community since 1963 Copyright 2019 Three priests ordained for the Diocese of Oakland By Michele Jurich Staff writer Addressing the three men before him, “Soon-to-be Father Mark, Father John and Father Javier,” Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, told them, “you are called and chosen” and told them what serving means today. In front of a crowded Cathedral of Christ the Light Bishop Barber told them he was zeroing in on the third vow they would take shortly, to celebrate the Mass and administer the Sacrament of Confession worthily. “You will never violate the Seal of Confession,” Bishop Barber told the three new priests. “No state or government can oblige you to betray your penitents.” Legislation — SB 360 — has passed the state Senate and is moving to the Assembly. It will compel a priest to reveal to police some sins he hears in confession. The new priests, John Anthony Pietruszka, 32, Javier Ramirez, 43, and Mark Ruiz, 56, listened attentively. Father Pietruszka is from Fall River Massachusetts; Father Ramirez from Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico; and Mark Father Ruiz was born and raised in Oakland. They would not be alone, the bishop assured them. To show that support, more than 70 VOICE CATHOLIC PACCIORINI/THE C. ALBERT priests, mostly diocesan, were present to With Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, at left, the trio of men prostrate themselves at the altar. This symbolizes each man’s offer blessings and the sign of peace to unworthiness for the office to be assumed and his dependence upon God and the prayers of the Christian community.

  • Most Reverend Joseph John Fox, Fifth Bishop of Green Bay (1904-1914)
Most Reverend Joseph John Fox (1904-1914) Paul and Catherine (Bartell) Fox came to America in 1840 and were among the first German settlers in Green Bay. They were two of the most energetic and persistent 19th Catholics of northern Wisconsin, helping to found St. Mary Parish (Green Bay). (St. Mary would become St. Francis Xavier Cathedral.) Joseph Fox, their third child, became the fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay and the only native son to be an ordinary of the diocese. He had an older sister, Cecilia, who became the prioress of the Dominican convent in Racine, Wisconsin. He completed his elementary education at the pro-cathedral (old St. Mary) before enrolling in the classics at St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee. His studied philosophy in Bastogne, Belgium, where he became proficient in French. He studied theology at the American College at the University of Louvain, Belgium. On June 7, 1879, Joseph Fox was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Green Bay. His first assignment was as pastor of St. Kilian Parish, New Franken. In May 1880, he was called back to Green Bay to be the secretary to Bishop Krautbauer and pastor of St. John Parish, Green Bay. He served for three years. Highlights of this pastorate included construction of the St. John Rectory, opening of St. John School, and reducing a troublesome parish debt. ,For the next 11 years--- beginning on August 31, 1883--- Father Fox served as pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Marinette, where he served with a large number of French Canadian people.

The Church (re)Turns Right... San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone...Southern-Italian Americana Implications Published on iItaly.org (http://iitaly.org) The Church (re)Turns Right... San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone...Southern-Italian Americana Implications Tom Verso (August 24, 2012) For two of their three thousand year history, the cultural bedrock and core values for the people South of Rome was the Catholic Church. Waves of conquers came and went changing governments and policies, but the Church always persevered (the Mass, Sacraments, Saints, rituals, etc.). Similarly, in American’s Little Italy urban villages, through the first half of the twentieth century, the same Church was the basis for those same core values down to the rhythm of daily life (morning Mass, mid-day Angelus, evening Rosary for Peace, etc), and the calendar was punctuated by ancient holy events (holidays, Saints Days, special masses, etc.).... In the second half of the twentieth century all that changed. The social history of the southern-Italian American people through the mid- twentieth century cannot be understood apart from the Church, and the sociology of southern-Italian Americans post 1950s must seek to understand the affects of the profound secular and Church changes in the current milieu (e.g. movement to heterogeneous suburbs, liberalism in the form of sexual and marriage mores, etc.). Most important of all, the Vatican II changes in Catholicism, which in less than one generation tore asunder the core rituals, ideology, architecture, etc. of the two Page 1 of 5 The Church (re)Turns Right... San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone...Southern-Italian Americana Implications Published on iItaly.org (http://iitaly.org) thousand year ‘traditional’ Church of southern-Italian Americans, and now seems to be moving back to its traditional roots.

1 The Columbia River Watershed: Caring for Creation and the Common Good An International Pastoral Letter by the Catholic Bishops of the Region “God saw all that had been made, and indeed it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31) “We cannot interfere in one area of the ecosystem without paying due attention both to the consequences of such interference in other areas and to the well-being of future generations … delicate ecological balances are upset by the uncontrolled destruction of animal and plant life or by a reckless exploitation of natural resources. It should be pointed out that all of this, even if carried out in the name of progress and well-being, is ultimately to humankind's disadvantage.... An education in ecological responsibility is urgent: responsibility for oneself, for others, and for the earth.” --Pope John Paul II, The Ecological Crisis: A Common Responsibility, 1990 “We must expand our understanding of the moral responsibility of citizens to serve the common good…” --The Catholic Bishops of the United States, Economic Justice for All, 1986 “The fundamental relation between humanity and nature is one of caring for creation.” --The Catholic Bishops of the United States, Renewing the Earth, 1991 “We need to reexamine the ways we think and act, to affirm and support what we are presently doing that is environmentally responsible and to critique and challenge what is irresponsible and unsustainable.” --The Catholic Bishops of Alberta, Canada, Celebrate Life: Care for Creation, 1998 (c) 2000 Columbia River Pastoral Letter Project.
