Another "best part" was getting to drive 2 days at Laguna Seca. The Golden Gate region coordinated to have a Driver's Sleazy Dog Construction Ed event at the end of Parade. We towed the 944 Spec car up and, I must say, these were the two most fun days I've ever had at a race track. Because I had students on Saturday, GGR put me in the Red run group (the one with the GT3 On the Cover... Cup Cars and several other fire-breathing monsters). Let's just say that the first session was spent with my eyes glued on the Wink Mirror. Personally I would have preferred to have been one group down. Both of my student would have benefited from riding in my passenger seat, but with the expanded passing in Red group, it is not allowed.

ON THE OTHER HAND, by Sunday morning I was feel- ing VERY comfortable and was able to start dicing with, and actually passing a couple of cars. Now, I am NOT a great driver. I am OK, and getting better, but it was interesting to find that I could keep up with (and more in some cases) a few of those high horsepower cars in the curves (and watch their tails disappear rapidly once the track straightened out.

Every year a couple hundred thousand race fans descend on Long Beach for the Toyota Grand Prix. This year they found great weather and three days of activities including the Lifestyle Expo, two great concerts (free to race ticket holders), and a wide selection of excellent food and drink around the venue. Then, of course, there was the racing — lots of exciting racing. Sunday's headline event was the Verizon IndyCar Series. This year the 80 lap race was won by Mike Conway in the #20 car of Ed Carpenter Racing. Mike's second win at Long Beach was by 0.9005 sec over defending Series champion . A multi-car incident in Turn 4 of lap 56 eliminated a large pack of the cars in front of Mike, including the three race leaders. In this case it paid to be in the right place at the right time. The INDYCAR-sanctioned race for developmental cars opened the racing on Sunday. from Bogota, Colombia driving the #5 Belardi took the lead from pole-sitter at the green flag and was never headed. He averaged 92.885 mph to win the 45-lap race. A 20-minute exhibition race featuring 600 horsepower, V-8 trucks getting airborne over specially constructed metal ramps on Shoreline Drive wowed spectators after the Indy Lights event. The Stadium SUPER Trucks first place finisher was in truck #7. The SCCA sanctioned Pirelli World Challenge concluded the racing Sunday. Johnny O'Connell won the GT class in the No. 3 Cadillac Racing CTS-V.R. It was a controlled drive from , leading all 32 laps, finishing ahead of his teammate, , with a margin of 1.528 seconds at an average 75.313 mph. Nic Jonsson won GTS class in the No. 36 Kia Motors America Kia Optima. Michael Mills won GT-A in the No. 41 EFFORT Racing Porsche GT3 R.

Saturday racing opened with the Pro/Celebrity Race — a 10-lap sprint for charity where all drivers had identically prepared Scion FR-S race cars. Brett Davern was the Celebrity, and overall winner. The roaring crowd witnessed the stunning performance by Davern, who started the race on the pole. He jumped out to an early start when the green flag dropped and never looked back, leading the 10-lap event around the 1.97-mile street course. Jr., who finished first in the Pro category, spent much of the race battling to overcome the Pros’ 30-second handicap. He wove through the field, picking off celebrity drivers one-by-one with former NASCAR driver on his tail. The Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase followed the Pro/Celebrity Race. This event was part of the TUDOR Unit- ed Sports Car Championship (the result of merging of the and Rolex Sports Car Series). won the Prototype Class in a Ford EcoBoost powered Riley. Jan Magnussen won the GTLM Class in car #3, a Corvette C7.R. Concluding Saturday's racing, the Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge was run under the lights at the eastern end of the circuit. The event showcased sixteen of the top cars and drivers in America. Daigo Saito of Tokyo, Japan was the winner. The Long Beach City Council has unanimously approved an extension to the current Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach agreement that will allow IndyCar racing to continue through 2018. 19 The Circuit Saturday, September 20 $10.00 per car Grand Prix Region Tour Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2) Drive the Twisties — Lunch at Evergreen Cafe

Beloved by cyclists and sports car drivers, the Angeles Crest Highway in the San Gabriel Mountains is one of GPX's favorite playgrounds. At last year's "Escape to L.A.", the An- geles Crest Tour was one of the favorites. On September 20th, GPX will use the route of the Escape Tour for a day of driving the "Twisties".

We will start in La Canada, on the top deck of the parking struc- ture across from the "Sports Chalet" at the intersection of Angeles Crest Highway and the 210 Freeway. See map and directions to follow.

We will meet at 8:00 AM and depart promptly at 9:00 AM.

Starting up Angeles Crest Highway, the speed limit is 40 MPH un- til we reach Red Box Ranger Station. After that the speed limit is 55 MPH, in most sections. We will observe all speed limits, as they allow ample opportunity for spirited driving.

The first stop will be a coffee break at Newcomb's Ranch, the old hostelry in the area of the former ski lifts. We will share the park- ing lot with a large number of motorcycles. After Newcomb's Ranch, we will head East, with a stop at Islip Saddle for a "Pit Stop", and to take in the beautiful view This is a “Rain or Shine” event

The destination of the morning drive will be the ski town of Wrightwood, where those of us who are so inclined, can have lunch at the Evergreen Cafe

For the afternoon, we have three options to return:

1. Continue on through Wrightwood on Highway 2 to Highway 138, and then on to the I-15 Freeway South

2. Those who love the Angeles Crest Highway, can return to La Canada using our morning route in reverse.

3. For the hard-core, we will have an alternate return route using mountain and desert roads on the North side of the San Gabriel Mountains. While less scenic, this longer route offers good roads and is an interesting alterna tive, providing desert temperatures are not too high.

In addition to talking about 912s in general, this story has a sub-plot of identifying unique structural items, implying that though purchased as a brand new 912 in the spring of 1969, the subject car had entered the production line intended to be a 911E or 911S.

Mike has cruised many highways in his 912 and has gained considerable practical knowledge in the process. At the introduction of the first 991 Carrera models at Tech Tactics West in the fall PDCC of 2011, PCNA representatives showed dramatic HYDRAULIC head-on movies comparing a 997 Carrera and a 991 ACTUATORS Carrera progressing around a sharp corner. The 997 Carrera head-on pictures showed a good sized front bumper lean, on the order of 10 or 15 degrees, at the corner apex. The 991 Carrera S with the PDCC, however, remained absolutely flat and parallel to the ground. This provides a better tire patch on the pavement when cornering. Factory testing of various combinations of driving aids at the Nurburgring indicated that, of the total lap time reduction of 14 FRONT seconds for the 991 Carrera S compared to the 997 ANTI-ROLL Carrera S, 4 or 5 seconds of the difference was due BAR to the PDCC (Reference 2). Hi Skip, Since writing this article I have had the opportunity to drive my 991 with the PDCC more extensively, including down to the Parade, and am convinced more than ever that it was a worthwhile accessory in spite of its high $3200 extra cost. Even when the chassis has no lateral g acting on it but there are lots of freeway pot holes, or rough pavement patches and one of your front wheels suddenly gets jolted going in a straight line, the extra inactive hydraulic cylinder acts like a supplemental shock to absorb the jolt from the fixed diameter sway bar. The result is a better overall ride in a straight line on harsh one-wheel bumps. New 991 owners need to read the PCNA tech introduction write-up on the PDCC that we listed as Reference 1 in the article.
