V a l E u x e p e b r a The need and Importance of sports! Ms. J Bhuvaneswari i s Director/Principal e e “Play a sport. It will teach you how to win honourably, lose gracefully, respect authority, work with n d others, manage time, and stay out of trouble.” t Presidency School Bangalore South has always strived to achieve a holistic approach to i nurture every child that enters the portal of this school. It has been constantly creating new a l V benchmarks in the field of academics and intends to do the same in the field of sports. As the head of the institution I believe, that sports play a vital role not just to build the a l character of a child but also to help it blossom fully. l e u The sports coaching that are held in school in the morning and evening is a step that helps a e students polish their skills and shine bright. The school and the parents should encourage r students to participate in large numbers. Sports is more than just physical exercise, it helps n b develop discipline and determination. It helps improve focus, team spirit and the grace to i a handle failure. It teaches every student that when they put on that jersey, the name on the n s front is more important than the name on the back. g e d

V E a x l p u e e r i b e a n s t e i d It is the need of the hour to have a sports curriculum so that the importance of it is brought a out to the world. Students should be introduced to indoor and outdoor games from a very l young age so that their dependence of technologically advanced video games decreases, V that does nothing, other than turn them into couch potatoes. l a We must ensure that we provide the right environment for our students and encourage e l them to participate in sports. We must make them realize that practice makes man perfect a u and their innate talents should not be wasted away, infact sports in many ways is more r n e difficult than academics as it needs constant practice during rain or shine. i The school does cater to sports, but a 40 minute class might not be sufficient to bring out the b n best in every child and that’s where these sports classes before and after school hours play a g a pivotal role. The students should push their limits as, the more difficult the challenge, the s greater is the joy of achieving it. e d Finally along with academic credit a student should possess an exposure in sports that will help them excel in their respective fields. So, just play, have fun and enjoy the game! 6

V a l E u x e p e b r a i s e e n d t We Rise By Lifting Others…….. i a GIVING BACK TO SOCIETY……… l V a "What if we donate all of it to an old age home?" were the words of a little girl when her l l parents asked her how she wanted to spend the money she had earned as a prize for her e u award at a National level quiz competition. a e r The joy of giving back to society has no bounds. It is always a grounding and eye-opening n b i experience which gives an insight about the reality of life. It brings about a feeling of a n s having given back to the society in which we belong. g e d India, has not managed to reach the level of urgency that is necessary, when it comes to initiatives towards community work. So it becomes all the more our responsibility to do our bit for this cause. V E a Spending time with the old, the orphans, the physically disabled, putting a smile on their x l faces gives a feeling of pure joy. No amount of treasure in this world can replace that p u happiness. It gives a sense of fulfillment and bliss. e e r Presidency School Bangalore South strongly believes in giving back to the society and i b each year we try to do it differently and more enthusiastically using newer and improved e a ways. Be it social service or creating awareness about social issues, every department n s takes it up separately introducing innovative ways of taking up the cause. t e i a d Blood Donation Camps, Walkathons, Donation of items to the needy are a few ways l we’ve taken forward for reaching out to the community. Under the guidance of our Principal, every year students, teachers and other staff, take pride in being a part and l V contribute generously to various causes. These activities sensitize the students and build a e them into more empathetic and responsible citizens and make them conscious of life on l a u the other side from where they see. These experiences also bring a change in their attitude r e towards life and give them a perspective of balancing priorities. Mostly single children, n with both parents working, today’s generation have the problem of plenty. They are not i b too well-versed with the concept of sharing and sacrifice. These experiences go a long n a way in teaching these values. g s e We take it is as a moral responsibility to try and influence people to take a strong turn d towards a better society and give back to it, with love and compassion, with no returns expected. 19

V a l E u x e p e b r a i s e e n d t Young crusaders of a new era. i Our country is bracing itself to ban single use plastic, with several commitments to a l V reduce its consumption. Our Prime Minister, with his clear declaration on war on a pollution, is not the first one to appeal to people to change ways. This fetish, as it may l l seem, is as old as post-colonial era. e u a e India remembers the father of the nation for being a multi-dimensional visionary. He r certainly did not live in fairy land, but left us with a dream of India which would be n b modern and novel in every way. Apart from social and political issues, he did opine on i a degrading environments, blaming human greed over need which has resulted in stripping n s g e the Earth of its resources. In those days, he stood witness to over-exploitation of coal, d soil, iron-ore in a bid to hasten industrial progress. Ultimately, he envisioned sustainable growth for India, something that still remains a vision. It is apparent that sufficient heed is not paid to the words of the wise. India, similar to V other countries, surged forward at a steady pace of industrial growth, producing colossal E a amounts of consumer goods, much of it made in plastic, in an era when plastics ushered x p l convenience in day to day life. The average Indian consumes 11kgs of plastic in a year u e compared to 109kgs of an average American. And while it paints a picture of betterment e r on one hand, the enormous waste generation is appalling on the other hand. We have i b spent years in slumberous addiction to plastic, ignorant of the apocalyptic consequences e a of its use. But now that we have nowhere else to look but the problem, humanity takes n s infant steps, but steps nonetheless to awaken to the problems of plastic pollution, water t i e shortage and climate change. d a Achieving the balance will take a long route. Although the change has begun, and it is l heartening to see the new generation taking on a battle path, against pollution, insisting V l countries to adopt policies in favour of stabilising climate change. There is hope as young e a leaders, as young as school students have picked up the baton towards a greener future, l a u living true to the words of the Mahatma, “ Be the change you wish to see in the world”. r e n So make hard choices, demand difficult answers! Decide your commitments. Resolve to i see plastic eliminated, force yourself to be a better consumer. It might just herald the b n a good kind of change, the kind of change that shall be revolutionary, strong, versatile and g s bring colour back to nature. e d 27

V a l E u x e p e b r a i s e e Ms. Vanishree Iyer n d t i a Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which l V children acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and a l l skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve e u positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain a e positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL can be r n b seamlessly integrated into a school’s culture and norms or explicitly i a taught outside of academic learning time. n s g e Social and emotional abilities are said to be indicators of how well a d child adjusts to his or her environment, adapts to change and, ultimately, how successful she or he will be in life. In fact, core V development abilities such as conscientiousness, emotional stability, E a openness and agreeableness can be as or even more important than x l cognitive intelligence in determining future employment. Despite these p u e e competencies being related to consequential life outcomes, it can be r challenging for educators to find effective ways to prioritize, teach and i e b assess social and emotional skills. a n s Developing these core life abilities through social and emotional learning t e i d (SEL) is critical to a child’s development, as it directly correlates to a success and happiness as an adult. For many children, school is the only l place where any deficiencies in these abilities can be addressed before V l a they become active members of society. e l a u Combining these skills with academic development creates high-quality r e learning experiences and environments that empower students to be n i more effective contributors in their classrooms today and in their b n a workplaces and communities tomorrow. g s e d 38

V Redemption a It was a cold winter evening and the trees were covered in snow. The streets of Belgium l too were white with snow. The old bookstore was usually empty at this time of the year E u but that day it seemed to be unusually busy. x e Amidst the busy crowd, there were two wealthy people seated behind a shelf immersed in p e a deep conversation. The rich Alex was sharing the flashbacks of his youth with his b r counterpart. Tears welled in his eyes as he recollected the grim times he had faced. ”I was a i s from a very poor family,” said Alex in a quiet voice, “where affording a meal per day e e seemed to be a luxury.” n d Comforting Alex, both of them walked out of the bookstore. The weather seemed to be t adding to the shared burden of their sorrow. The streetlights went off simultaneously and i they heard a collision. Running towards the scene, Alex thought how synonymous it was a to his flashbacks. He thought of the day, fate made him bid his dad farewell forever in a l V car accident. The taxi his father was driving had been brutally slammed against a nearby a l l building after a speeding truck had hit it. Now, why was he thinking of his past when he was living in luxury and satisfaction? e u a Forty years back he had been beside his father’s body, mourning in the clutches of an e r insurmountable loss. Being a taxi driver, his dad was not very wealthy. Nevertheless, he n b was a voracious reader who spent most of his spare time at the same old bookstore the two i a men had been sitting in. n s “If only a car was there to hire, my dad need no have endured the misfortune of meeting g e his end.” Alex vaguely remembered that the onlookers had told him about a mysterious d man, clad in black, who had stormed into the bookstore screaming for help. As Alex had been recollecting his past, his counterpart had started to behave in a strange manner. They reached the place where the accident had taken place. V Alex kneeled own to help the old man who was injured in the accident. Much to his shock, E a he found his counterpart missing from the scene. Where did his counterpart, Harry, go? x l The injured man’s head jerked back and blood gurgled from his mouth, demanding Alex’s p u attention immediately. While Alex was taking him to the hospital, familiar scenes flashed e e in his mind. His heart ached and without his knowledge he uttered, “Had I been in the r same position as I am now, I could have saved my dad.” As he kept thinking, a clearer i b picture of the mysterious man who entered the bookstore to hire his dad flashed before his e n a eyes. The face of the mysterious man resembled that of the counterpart… t s While he was wheeling the old man to the emergency room, he bumped against his e i counterpart. Harry could not hold it for any longer. The moment the old man was taken d a away into the ICU, he turns to Alex. With a voice trembling with guilt, he begged for l pardon and reveals the truth. V ”I was the one who hired your father forty years ago, I was an arms dealer and I knew I l a would meet with an accident. My rivals had been plotting my death. However, at that e l moment fate changed and your father was killed instead. I am… extremely sorry, Alex.” a u Choked with rage and sorrow, he felt like throttling Harry. However, memories of how r e Harry had brought him up as his own child prevented him from doing so. Harry resumed n talking, i n b ”So I decided to abandon my past and claiming the identity as a poor car driver. I brought g a you up.” s Harry felt that bringing up Alex was the best way to reconcile for his misdeed. Standing e with Alex in that cold hospital hallway he thought, have I found redemption after all? d -Grade 9B 9696

V a CRICKET MANIA l “ This is a crucial match for us. How can you just leave your place? Remember last time E u when we were losing wickets and you sat here, the match turned in our favour.” These x e were my words for my little brother. Like any other usual household in India, we were p e crazy about this sport especially during World Cup. Everything seemed fair to make b r a India win which included special prayers, lucky charms and even lucky seats while i s watching a match against strong opponents. e e n d Cricket amalgamated many walks of our life. It was the most interesting Math period t ever. We had learnt from our grandfather how to calculate the current run rate, strike i a rate, required run rate etc way ahead of the portions in our schools. The probability of l V whether a batsman could score a boundary or hit a sixer; converting twos into threes or a scoring five runs for the team by sending a wide ball to boundary; hitting a sixer in a no l l ball and getting 7 runs: were all the options we pondered upon when our team was e u a e batting. Taking a quick single and making it to the crease in time, escaping the run out, r was rushing our adrenaline to the next level. Nail-biting finishes were the ones looking n b forward and when accomplished were cherished for the lifetime. i a n s Importance of health and fitness were a visual example on- screen with the wonderful g e d catches or knick of the time run outs or exclusive dives for saving the boundaries. It was a visual reminder that if a sportsperson is not in form, the performance will show in the field. Keeping a check on the weight increase also mattered. When these sportsmen V endorsed any health drinks, many of their fans would buy these products even if they E a didn’t need it or liked it! Nowadays almost all products get endorsed by Indian players x l ranging from fabrics, paint, fans, toothpastes, sports cars, bikes and what not. p u e e Cricket grounds are fashion hubs: dressing sense of spectators are a visual treat for r i audience on Television. Few are so funny that the camera captures them multiple times b e a in the same innings! The celebrities in the hi-fi stands make a fashion statement there too. n s And of course the Jersy of the players adorned with many of the sponsorers logos are t e catchy with their colour combination and detailing. The footwear or the special shoes i a d with spikes was a sight to watch when the fielders were diving for the ball to save the l runs. l V Cricket was a memory game: Who scored highest runs in the series; Who was the highest a e l wicket taker; Which Country was the host for World Cup right from its onset till date and a u more importantly who won in which year! It is still mesmerizing to watch a single r n e bowler getting all the ten wickets of the opponent team in a single ODI, to watch a i batsman scoring double century or hitting 6 sixers in a single over. Cricket has captivated b n a our attention to detail. History may repeat or a team may rewrite history; both are g s welcome! Getting to watch a super over in World Cup Final though is an emotion e beyond imagination. d 105105

V CRICKET MANIA a l E u How a player/team learns from its mistakes, how to get the best out of the given x e situation, how to keep your cool in the toughest of the situations, how to take a loss p gracefully, how to remain diligent even after your consistent win- These are few values e b which Cricket has taught. Of course there is something to learn from anything if you r a i s have that eye for learning. e e n d Commentaries were something which we looked forward to listen to while watching t cricket. It introduced us to a plethora of new words, the accents of the same words of i English pronounced by different commentators. A few of them had mystical magic in a l V their commentary. Speech given by the Man of the Match or the Captain of the a winning team and that of the losing team was looked forward to for further analysis. l l Whether the benefit of win or the cause of loss is shared as a team work or pinned onto e u individuals. a e r Finally luck always favors the brave: take chances, try out new combinations with the n b i team, encourage and appreciate the things done and even those which are not done. a n s Cricket is a religion for its fans with their deities changing frequently but the passion g e remains the same for all the eras, whatever may be the format of the game- the test d matches , ODIs or the tantalizing 20-20.

V a A MARRIAGE TO MONEY l E u x e p e b r a i s e e n d t i a l V a l l e u a e r n b i a A marriage is a union of love and family and in today's society, money. People needlessly n s g e throw their earnings at unnecessary objects, items and rituals with the blind belief that it d would bring good tidings. But one must ask, what good tidings are worth risking poverty for? For the millions of daughters in this country, families attempt to spare no expense. Only the best sarees, the most expensive jewellery and the grandest locations they can find. For V the grooms, cars and vehicles, parties and festivities cannot be anything less than awe E a inspiring. This is a testimony to India's obsession with flaunting wealth that, quite fankly, x l doesn't exist. p u Understanding, why such cultures and traditions are followed is no easy feat for a e e r rational individual. But for the average Indain, tradition is the rule of life, if not followed, i b a person may well risk being swallowed by society. That’s the first and most compelling e a reason to lavishly organise weddings. Gullible men and women also fall prey to various n s myths and beliefs – the better the food, the more the gold, the richer the celebrations, the t e happier the marriage. Why can't we have simpler marriages? Why don't we use our i d money more constructively? All this foolish spending fueled by a society hell bent on a extortion and social dominance has resulted in despair. People have been forced to empty l their pockets for flowers and plastic smiles of their neighbours. The institution of V marriage is worth only its weight in gold. Most of all we can't find a way out. l a Truly, the only solution to these needless problems is social reform. We need to rebuild e l the way India perceives marriage and faith. Maybe if society ever permitted, we could a r u find a better use for our want for attention. e n With this the writer leaves the reader with one thought – How expensive a wedding is too i expensive? b n a - by Celine Cordeiro- XIIC g s e d 110110 Effective communication Effective communication Effective communication PSBS Child Centric Child Centric Child Centric

This technology was largely e e developed by John Good enough, Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino. Lithium n d batteries are preferred for a number of reasons such as having a very high energy density, t i no memory effect and very low self discharge. However they can be a danger if damaged a and incorrectly charged. Samsung company was forced to recall Galaxy Note 7 following l V Lithium ion fires. In spite of the dangers, these lightweight and rechargeable batteries are a a great way to utilize and store renewable energy sources such as sunlight and wind. l l e u The dramatic impact these batteries have on our human life is astounding. Electronic a e r gadgets have become a part and parcel of every human activity. V The Grand Indian Wedding a l On an average about thirty lakhs are spent on marriages in India. We see parents of the E u bride and bridegroom spending their entire lifetime savings on this single event. x e However today we question the expenses made in the event. p e b The number of people invited for the event is huge, some of whom the bride or r a bridegroom may have never come across in their life. To accommodate the huge chunk i s of people, enormous expenses are made. It starts off with the invitation card expenses. e e This itself takes a lot of money as in India, people still don’t prefer to be invited via e- n t d communication, and require invitation through cards. The venue of the wedding is i chosen in a manner that the visitor’s eyes are pleased more than that of the couple to be a married. The venue and theme of the wedding is chosen really grandly to satisfy the ego l V of the parents, even though it empties their pockets. According to the preceding steps in a the event, a huge amount is spent on food requirements. The outfit is chosen in a way l l such that either the bride or the groom never use it again. The gold worn by the Indian e u a bride weighs more than her. In the end a marriage now looks like a competitive event to e r show who holds it grander. n b There is a gradual change in trend seen amongst our youth today. They have resorted to i a n s simple marriages where costs have been cut upto two-thirds the previous amounts. The g e new couple decide to either spend that money constructively for a better purpose later in d their lives, or for their parents to use the amount for the remaining part of their lives. It’s kind of a weird l situation that it’s about a million years of evolution of mankind and we are still not E u familiar with our own body. Scientists officially added a new organ to Gray's Anatomy. x e p Do you know the DISCOVERY? e b r a i s Mesentery: is now officially the human body's 79th organ. The organs name translates to “in the e e middle of the intestines" and is a double fold in the peritoneum (or lining to the abdominal cavity) n d that attaches the intestines to the abdominal wall. t Interstitium: would be the 80th organ in the human body and probably the biggest one as it is a i a part of the entire body. It is a large network of fluid-filled spaces that surround our lungs, digestive l V tract, blood vessels and various other organs and it could be the key to understand various medical a mysteries such as skin wrinkles and the reason why cancer spreads. l l e u a e Although beyond human hearing, these sound waves can perform important tasks, r especially in medicine, SOLVE THE MYSTERY? n b Explainer: What is ultrasound? i a n s Light, heat and sound are all forms of energy that travel as waves. Scientists measure g e d wave’s frequency in cycles per second, or hertz. Human ears can hear anything between 20 and 20,000 hertz. Waves with a higher frequency are known as ultrasound. Those higher pitches are beyond human hearing. For many decades, medicine has relied on ultrasound to picture soft tissues inside the V body. This type of diagnostic ultrasound uses low-energy waves. That makes it safe for E a checking the health of unborn babies in the womb. Doctors also use it to scan for diseases x l in children and adults. p u e e r Ultrasound imaging with low-energy waves uses a transducer. This device converts one i b form of energy into another. One part of the transducer converts electrical energy into e a short ultrasound pulses. It sends those pulses into the body. Another part of the n s transducer receives the echoes that bounce back from the tissues, those pulses hit inside t e the body. A computer analyzes those echoes to create an image. The echoes from different i d tissue types show up as darker and brighter parts in the image. a More recently, researchers have been studying how ultrasound with higher energy might l be used to treat certain diseases. This is called therapeutic ultrasound. It is used to treat V kidney stones; to destroy cancer cells without harming neighboring cells; to trigger brain l a cells to release signaling chemicals. This might one day lead to treatments for brain e a l diseases and mood disorders. Some researchers have even shown that ultrasound can r u make certain cells release insulin. e n i By Indumathi –HOD Biology Dept b n a g s e d 120120

Year after year, the results of our exams E u improve. We see students achieve marks which were earlier deemed impossible. The irony x e is, that with all this intellect that can be found in every corner of our country, we are still p not considered a developed nation. The cause for this irony? Something that modern e b economists term as brain drain. r a i s Brain drain can be explained as a phenomenon where the educated youth of e n e our country move abroad to get jobs with higher pay or with other benefits. In other d t words, all the intellect that should have powered our nation, today is responsible for i running major tech giants like Google and Microsoft. It is a no-brainer that if all this a human resource went into the development of our country, we would have been way l V ahead of our competition today. However, it is also a no-brainer that stopping a problem a like brain drain is a herculean task. But if some miracle were to stop brain drain, USA l l would become to India what India is to USA today; Iron Man wouldn’t be fiction and e u perhaps, most importantly, what we associate with the West today would become a e something we associate with the East. r n b This voluntary export of educated youth can be considered the downfall of our i a n economy. It does not fetch returns but instead harms the exporter, in this case, our s g e country. Our country currently has little to offer in terms of jobs and institutions that make d corporations successful. Hence, we lose most valuable educated youth to the attractive economies such as the USA.

However, making service to the country compulsory, might look attractive in E V the short run but is not the action for the long run. It is when people wish to work that a x they do their best. Love for the country or nationalism is a value which must be inculcated l p u from a young age in schools. Working in our country can be made compulsory for an e e initial five year period after graduation/ post-graduation from college. This would show r the youth the potential to be successful here. It is also of utmost importance that the i b government invests in institutions for education and also for coming up with startups. In e a our attempt to ensure that nobody in our country is left out, we have ignored the needs for n s those who actually bring the country to the global play field. t e i d It is thus imperative, that we bring brain drain to a halt as soon as possible. a l Change starts today and it starts because of everyone. V a THE CLOAK E l One fine morning as Maria woke up and drew the curtains aside, rather clumsily she heard the faint u x and familiar sound of the chattering parrots and several other birds. e p Though she was accustomed to these noises she could not help feeling as though she was e b discovering a new sound every morning. She quickly dressed up and ate up her breakfast before r a her mom woke up. She walked to her school and quickly rushed to her class just as the school bell i e s started ringing, as usual she went and sat next to her best friend Sarah and waited for her teacher to e n come as the rest of the class made the most unusual types of noises. Soon after several many periods d t she and her friend finally found solace at their lockers…….but as soon as Maria opened her locker i she found a strange cloak much like the Invisibility Cloak in her favorite book series Harry Potter. a She thought for a split second that the cloak was indeed the Invisibility cloak from Harry Potter, but l V quickly shredded the idea as Sarah told her to hurry up or they would be late for lunch. a l As they entered the lunch room she asked Sarah “Say….suppose you found a strange cloak in your l e locker……what would you do with it?” Sarah as the smartest and most logical girl in her class u a e immediately asked if the locker she was talking about was hers, when Sarah learnt the truth, she r immediately reacted “then what are you waiting for? Let’s go and check it out!” They raced past the n b hallway and found the cloak in Maria’s locker, fortunately the hallway was deserted and no one i a could see them……”Go on try it out fast!!!”As Maria tried it out, she immediately felt a tingling n s sensation and Sarah let out a long disbelieving gasp” There are words on it!” said Sarah…..”Well g e then what are you waiting for read it out” slowly Sarah read it out “CONGRATULATIONS GOOD d LADIES FOR FINDING MYSELF” it said and continued “TWO PLACES YOU SHALL FIND WHERE YOUR FORTUNE LIES, FOR I AM HERE FOR A DAY AND NO MORE USE ME AND BEHOLD YOUR LUCK GOING FAR BEYOND THE UNIVERSE”…………Sarah slowly stopped V reading and said “Do you think it could be a riddle?” E x a Maria pondered upon this and wore the cloak back again and waited for it to say p l something……suddenly the cloak boomed out “FIND THE PLACE WHERE THE RAINBOW u e DISAPPEARS” Maria and Sarah remained dumbfounded and started thinking………….”By golly I e r think I have got it! As Maria said this, she sped down the hall and arrived at their Art room which i b was nicknamed by the students (THE RAINBOW HALL) she opened the door and went to the last e a corner of the classroom. There she found some plants, pots and some gardening supplies. Maria n s and Sarah looked enquiringly at each other and decided to ask the cloak again. The cloak when put t e on said “THE TRASURE IS IN FRONT OF YOU MAKE USE OF IT” Maria and Sarah decided to i d plant the plants. They went to the Community Garden and planted the saplings. After a tiring day a when Maria and Sarah went home they discussed about the cloak and decided to ask it its last l question. “what will happen to the plants?” they said, and the cloak replied “THE ANSWER WILL V COME TO YOU WHEN YOU NEED IT THE MOST” saying that the cloak burst out…….Maria and l a Sarah went back home and forgot about the cloak….Many years later when Sarah and Maria forgot e l each other and got settled, both of them happened to be travelling on the same road when they a r u needed a bit of rest. They sopped under the mangrove they forgot they had planted and happened n e to meet each other despite being under the Economic pressure of the United States and had recalled i each other while sitting under the same trees they had planted when they were at school. b n a Thus the tree treasure the cloak had given them became the hope of their friendship. g s MORAL-SOMETIMES THE GREATEST TREASURES COME IN SMALL AMOUNTS…… e d By Ayushi Dutta 5E 126126 Effective communication Effective communication Effective communication PSBS Child Centric Child Centric Child Centric Magic and Art Shreya P – 7B V Safa – 9D a l E u x e p e b r a i s e e n d t i a l V Khushi Agarwal a – 10A l l e u a e r n b i a n s g e d

V a PLOGGING- AN ECO FRIENDLY l E u WORKOUT x e p e b r a Plogging- A new international workout trend has made it possible to get in shape and i s care for the environment at the same time. Plogging is an eco-friendly exercise through e n e which people pick up trash while jogging or brisk walking as a way to clean up litter and d t also take care of their health. Groups of people around the world are picking up trash i while out running, an activity known as “plogging”, a combination of jogging and the a l V Swedish word for pick up, plocka upp. Started in Sweden, this innovative activity has gone global, gaining popularity among environmentalists and fitness enthusiasts alike. a l l e u The plogging movement was started by Erik Ahlström in 2016. After moving to a e Stockholm from a small ski-community in northern Sweden, Ahlström became frustrated r n with the amount of litter he saw while riding his bike to work every day. Stopping to b i a clean up trash became a habit, then a part of his exercise routine as he incorporated the n s activity into his runs. By 2016 other people were joining in, and plogging runs, with g e d groups of couple coming together to run and pick up trash, became official events in Sweden.

Since then the movement has grown organically around the world, thanks in large part to V E a social media. Initially used as a tool for organizing events, plogging-related posts and x l hashtags have helped spread the activity from country to country, with most new p u participants inspired by what they’ve seen online. e e r i b Besides the obvious environmental benefits, the extra movements in plogging make it e a healthier than if you simply ran past the trash. According to Ahlström, a half hour of n s plogging burns 288 calories, compared with the 235 calories burned during regular t e i jogging. Ahlström believes that the multiple benefits of plogging, combined with its d a accessibility, are what have helped make it so popular. “It’s a low-intensity exercise l format, usually lasting about 60 minutes. But at the same time, it’s smart, good for the V body and mind, and of course good for the environment.” l a e l a u The beauty of plogging is its simplicity. Unlike many other exercise trends, it doesn’t r e require classes or expensive equipment, just a bag and a desire to make a positive n difference. The plogging is the best way we could give a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi who i n b always propagated the importance of cleanliness. Let us pledge to collaborate swatch a g s India and fit India campaign and pay our homage to Gandhi and truly celebrate 150 years e of Mahatama in the real sense. d By Neetu Gupta, Social Science Department 128128

V Time On Your Side a l Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the night. It was late, the streets deserted. E u A few stragglers hurried home. Rosen looked out the window. ”A few more minutes”, he x e thought grimly. “A fine night to do this.” p e b He glanced for a second at his old watch ,hanging onto his wrist by a thread, then back r i a again at the inky darkness outside his rickety house. A lamp cast blurry shadows on the s e wall. From the bedroom emanated the sounds of breathing, his children deep in sleep. e n d t The watch ticked. A tight knot formed in his chest.” The last time” ,Rosen breathed. i ”Then its an honest life for us, living in comfort.” A flash brought his attention to the a window. There-white light-a torch-the signal! l V a He hurried to wear his coat and took up the case. Turning, a shadow arrested him. His l l beautiful wife of many years, Mary, stepped into the dim light. ”Eddie”, she pleaded. e u a e ”Don’t go. I got a bad feeling about this.” He made a frustrated noise. She didn’t get it. This was for them, the kids ,their life. One last time. r n b i a He rushed out the door ,his wife’s dark eyes following him .On the streets, he looked at n s his watch again. Half past eleven. The time they agreed upon. The watch ticked loudly, as g e if to punctuate his thoughts. d The harbour was deserted ,except the few shadowy figures moving about in the dark. Rosen paused ,looking around warily.

V One lone figure stepped out. A straggly, unintimidating sort of fellow. Not the sort E a expected to play a key role in a smuggling ring. Then again, that probably worked to his x l advantage. p u “Do you have it?”, he greedily eyed the case. Rosen tensed up, then relaxed and nodded. e e He opened the case. The diamonds glittered ,throwing light around them, before he shut r it again. i b “Payment up front.”, he reminded. The man laughed. ”That wont be a problem.” ,he e a mocked. Before Rosen could decipher that ,a sharp pain ricocheted through his head as n s his vision went dark. t i e He woke up disoriented. His sight was blurry. His head hurt. Oh, and he couldn’t d a breathe. Water surrounded him, suffocating him. He was in the ocean. A trail of blood l floated around him. Was it his? Didn’t know. V l The kids….Mary…it was to all end tonight…he would have finally had more time….His a e l hands floated out eerily in front of him. He couldn’t move them, couldn’t move anything. a u The watch’s face turned ,as if in slow motion, to face him. Midnight. No more time. r e A turbulent wave sent him crashing into a rock. It pierced his chest. The watch hit it too, n breaking the cover .The sound of shattering glass was muffled by the water. V a l E u x e p e b r a i s e e n d t 7-o’clock: a tale of blood, skin, and bone i a 7o’clock in the evening - It had been a grisly past couple of hours for Jaithra, who now l V lay trembling on the couch, beads of perspiration now profusely running down the a length of his neck and torso. That was when it had happened: 7 o’clock. The effect of the l l accident had still not worn off, and his heart began pounding strenuously against the e u feeble walls of his visibly scarred and battered upper body. The whole incident had left a e him shocked, even spell-bound, one could say: paralyzed, he had refused to budge, and r n b refrained from even the slightest of twitches for over two-and-a-half hours. The whole i a series of unfortunate events just kept flashing back in his mind, an eternal replay of what n s he hoped was just a bad nightmare. The traffic light indicated red, but he just couldn’t g e afford to miss the meeting. Letting it slip, he pressed the accelerator to witness a blinding d flash in the following split second: the cyclist ahead of him crumpled to the tarmac pavement, almost instantaneously plummeting to the ground in a heap of torn ligaments, blood-spattered bones jutting out of his arms. Panicking, he had fled the scene at once, V the angry sirens and blaring horns still echoing through his ears. “Why did you have to E a run, you idiot?” Self-deprecating thoughts flooded his mind as he mentally reprimanded x l p himself for being part of what he knew could very well land him in a “ditch”, so-to- u e e speak, and ruin the entire foundation of his life. “Damn your corporate obligations, now r you’re wanted for murder”. Lost in his own thoughts and plans to flee to the countryside i b to avoid prosecution, he paid little heed to the knock on the door. A few minutes into his e a reverie, the knocking grew louder and more frequent: “Drat, it must be the cops”. With a n s heavy heart and kitchen knife in hand, he carefully eased open the door. “Sir, your son: t e i he apparently died in a hit-and-run case involving a rash driver. He supposedly died on d a spot at-” Jaithra thrust the knife into his visitor’s neck and stumbled back, at once aghast l at what he had just done. “How on Earth…. WHEN? WHEN DID IT HAPPEN? V ANSWER ME!” With a blood-streaked and now mutilated face, blood trickling down the l a upper portion of his body, the hapless victim, choking on a mixture of saliva, blood and e a l sweat, manage to blurt out- “7 o’clock sir! It was…7 o”clo…” With a sudden jerk, his r u body became rigid - a motionless heap of blood, skin and bone. It reminded Jaithra of e n something- that boy on the cycle, a heap of blood, skin and bone- it was his son. i n b By Sankalp Singh XB a g s e d 150150 Effective communication Effective communication Effective communication PSBS Child Centric Child Centric Child Centric Housewise Assemblies
