The papers of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs between August, 1974, and April, 1981, by the first national president Olga Madar, and were opened for research in September, 1983. Additions to this collection were received in 1988 through 1993. Arranged as Part II of the Collection, these records were opened for research in May, 1995. In 1974, the Coalition of Labor Union Women was founded in with the goal of bringing women to the forefront of the workforce as full and equal participants. The Coalition's four main objectives are as follows: organizing unorganized women within the labor force by encouraging unions to be more aggressive in their efforts to bring women under collective bargaining agreements; to encourage women, through their unions, to recognize and take positive action against job discrimination in hiring, promotion and classification; to lead women to become more active participants in the political and legislative process through the labor union particularly on affirmative action issues; and to persuade women to assume leadership roles and participate at the policy-making levels of their unions. The papers that comprise the collection include correspondence, minutes, legal and financial documents, resolutions, proceedings, speeches, subjects files, and printed material relating to the administration and activities of CLUW. The material documents the organization's efforts to educate, support, and encourage women, and to highlight issues and problems concerning women in the workplace, particularly, pay equity, sex discrimination, child care and family issues, affirmative action, occupational health and safety, and labor relations, as well as other issues such as reproductive freedom, education, and domestic violence. Also included is material pertaining to the founding of CLUW and the first constitutional convention, the national office, governing boards and committees, chapters throughout the United States, the Center for Education and Research, conventions, conferences, seminars, publications, and the CLUW News. The collection covers the terms of Olga Madar and Joyce Miller as president, and the election of Gloria Johnson in 1994. Scope and Content Part 3 of the Coalition of Labor Union Women Collection (CLUW) is comprised of materials relating to the administration and activities of CLUW, particularly correspondence, minutes of the National Executive Board (NEB) and National Officers' Council (NOC) meetings, biennial conventions, conferences, state chapter files, and subject files. The state chapter files document the creation of many local chapters, as well as the election of State Vice Presidents and Alternate State Vice Presidents (predominantly in the 1990s), and chapter reporting. Important issues highlighted include reproductive rights, pay equality, health care, discrimination, domestic violence, sexual harassment, AIDS, and union relations. Also included are the organization and promotion of programs, such as Working Women's Awareness Week, Come Shop With Me, Take Our Daughters to Work Day, and National Vote Day.

Arrangement Files are arranged loosely by subject in the order they were accepted by the Reuther Archives. Box headings give a general indication of the contents, but there is no formal order. Therefore, a subject may be covered and/or duplicated in more than one box. Boxes are numbered 1-45 and do not continue numbering from Part 1 & 2.
