20170419 APQEII Form Guide Welcome to the 2017 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup to be held on Sunday 30th April. A captivating edition of the HK$20 million Group 1 Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2000m) is set to feature nine contenders from five international jurisdictions, with last year’s champion facing a clutch of rising stars. Werther was an emphatic winner from top-class rivals in 2016 and will line up once again: this time the challengers will include one of Japan’s smartest talents, Neorealism, as well as the classic-placed Dicton from France, Mubtaahij from the UAE, Australia’s The United States and one of Hong Kong’s new poster boys, Pakistan Star. In the FORM GUIDE, the PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS table provides you with a bird-eye's view of the race. This at-a-glance guide gives you a full form summary of the horses in a simple and concise table. Another handy tool is the INTERNATIONAL RATINGS CHART. In weight-for-age races like the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup, generally speaking, the higher a horse's rating, which is based on racing performance, the better its chance to win. A preliminary SPEED CHART has been included to assist in identifying likely positions in running. Please note that this is preliminary only and the full Speed Map will be available after barrier draw in the SpeedPOWER Form Guide on www.hkjc.com/english/formguide/formguide.asp. If you need further information and analysis, just flip over to the next section where you will find the COMPREHENSIVE PAST PERFORMANCE of the horses. Also included is the FORM ANALYSIS, which highlights the notable achievements and racing characteristics of each horse. Another feature is the RATINGS HISTORY CHART. This chart indicates the quality and consistency of a horse's previous 10 starts through a graphical illustration of the ratings achieved in these races. This information is correct as of 18th April 2017. In 1995 it became an international event with overseas runners invited to participate. The race distance has been changed from 2200m to 2000m since 1997. Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet became the race sponsor of this premier 2000m contest in 1999 when the race was promoted to G2 status, and the race was then elevated to its existing G1 status in 2001. The race’s prize money increased from HK$14 million to HK$20 million in 2015, nearly quadruple the purse of HK$5.35 million offered in 1999. As one of the World’s Top 100 G1 races, the G1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup has attracted participation from many high-class international runners down the years. After the APQEII Cup became an international event in 1995, three overseas horses have achieved a notable double in Hong Kong – winning at December’s Hong Kong International Races and then adding the APQEII Cup, in the same Hong Kong season.

In 1861, when Japan was about to move from the feudal system into the Meiji Restoration, foreign residents living in Yokohama, predominantly British, introduced the first Western-style horse racing by establishing the Yokohama Race Club to Japan. Western style horse racing was held in foreign enclaves, and hence, unfortunately, very little is known or recorded about initial era in Japan’s modern horse racing history. At about the same time that the name of the Japanese central city was changed from Edo to Tokyo, Western-style horse racing began to be found in the major metropolitan cities across the country. FWD QEII Cup (Group 1) – 2000m – Turf – Right-handed Course Race History In 1975 the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Hong Kong for a state visit. To mark the event, on 5 May, the Hong Kong Jockey Club staged the inaugural running of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, with a prize fund of HK$50,000. Her Majesty was in attendance at Happy Valley and presented the winning trophy to Mr. and Mrs. Barma, whose horse Nazakat had prevailed in the 1575m sand track handicap under Malaysian rider A. K. Cheam for trainer Cheung Hok-man. The race continued as a handicap for 17 years, its distance switching between 1400m, a mile, 1800m, and once at 2000m in April 1986. The race, which moved to Sha Tin in 1979, was in fact staged twice in 1986, first in April and then in October when the Queen was once again in attendance, that time to see Forever Gold win a 1600m renewal. In April 1992 the contest was raised to HKG2 level and River Verdon won that mile edition. Three years later the race was opened up to international competition, as a local G1 contest. The UAE trainer Hilal Ibrahim sent Red Bishop to carry off the then 2200m race under Mick Kinane. That win presaged the following year’s victory of Overbury for the newly-formed Godolphin as trainer Saeed bin Suroor and jockey Frankie Dettori teamed up to clinch an early international conquest for Sheikh Mohammed’s operation. In 1997 the QEII Cup’s distance of 2000m was firmly established and a young Douglas Whyte partnered South Africa’s London News to success.
