I hope you all enjoyed your Easter break. It was marvellous to have such a successful Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival at Middle Island over the weekend of 12 and 13 March, with 22 teams entering from 13 different schools. I was delighted to be able to make the presentations at the prizegiving, and would like to take this opportunity to

The Bridge The thank Boase Cohen & Collins for their generous HK$5,000 sailing scholarships to each of the winning Pico and Feva teams. This event, and the scholarships, were a real boost to youth sailing in Hong Kong. I also thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Rolex China Sea Race which started on 23 March, with a fabulous line-up of 33 boats on the start line. A full report on this race will appear in the May issue of Ahoy!. I am now looking forward to the California Insurance Match Racing Nationals on 16 and 17 April, and welcoming overseas match racing teams and officials to the International Match Racing Regatta, which will be held over the weekend of 22 to 24 April. On 30 April it’s the final event of the Old Mutual Top Dog Trophy Series, the HKRNVR Memorial Vase. This will be a good warm-up for the EFG Nations’ Cup which takes place on 1 May, and following that is a public Commodore Mark Whitehead holiday ensuring that everyone has time to recover. 會長韋浩德 My sincere congratulations to all our Sharks sailors who took part in Hong Kong Race Week, held at Middle Island from 17 to 21 February. In particular they deserve our admiration for the grit and determination they showed by competing in the extreme weather conditions we experienced on the Sunday. A full report on this event appears on page 14. At the time of writing five of our Sharks members – Duncan Gregor, Thorwen Uiterwaal, Dolf Hendriksen, Matt Clark and Abbey Hammond – are about to head off to the ASAF Youth Sailing Cup 3 in Singapore as part of the HKSF Optimist Squad, so I wish them all good sailing and fair winds! The rowing and paddling season has started with excellent spirit. The senior rowing team provided a great show at the Head of Shing Mun River with both men and women winning by a large margin. And the Dragon Boat team had more than 80 members in the season kick-off Bai San ceremony. More news to come from this section as they gear up for the busy spring and summer schedule. Our youth rowing programme continues to go from strength to strength and currently provides coaching to eight of the top schools in town, with more in the pipeline. We have also now extended our school coaching services to dragon boating. The Kellett Island Development is coming along nicely and the Ship Shop will open later this month. We have unfortunately found we are faced with a problem that may slow down the conversion of the Bowling Alley and expansion of the Bistro, and I report further on this on page 10. Finally, may I just remind members again that our Annual General Meeting will be held at 1800hrs on 14 June. If you would like to put forward names to be considered by the Nominating Committee please obtain the necessary forms from the website or from the General Manager’s office. The completed forms should then be submitted to the General Manager’s office by the deadline of 19 April.

General Manager’s Message

I hope you all enjoyed Easter and took full advantage of everything the Club had to offer. It was good to see so many members enjoying Good Friday at Middle Island with fun and games for the children, as well as the traditional Easter Lunch Buffet and Egg Hunt in the Compass Room. Congratulations to all who competed in the Rolex China Sea Race and it was magnificent to see the start out in the harbour once more with the iconic Hong Kong skyline as a backdrop. The Bridge The As has been reported in the magazine previously, the Kellett Island Development has been progressing very well. We have however encountered an issue recently that affects the planned programme for the conversion of the Bowling Alley into new function rooms and the refurbishment and expansion of the Bistro. An update from the Commodore is available on page 10 of this edition and includes the details and alternatives being considered at the time of publication of this edition of Ahoy!. As the plans progress and are finalised we will of course keep members informed through weekly emails and future editions of Ahoy!, together with notices at the Clubhouse.

General Manager Mark Bovaird The pool is once again fully open, and is now available for swimming, until 2000hrs. (Members may be 總經理布馬克 requested to vacate the pool earlier in the case of a private party or a Club function being held at the poolside but plenty of advance notice will be given.) Starting on 1 April we have a great steak promotion coming up in the Compass Room while the burger promotion will continue in the Bistro until the end of the month. Also in the Compass Room we have a Gérard Bertrand Wine Dinner and a Petaluma Wine Dinner on 7 and 21 April respectively, and The Grace Notes make a welcome return on Monday 11 April. Planning ahead, please mark in your diaries Middle Island Day on Monday 2 May – this event is usually held on 1 May but we have changed the date this year to avoid clashing with EFG Nations’ Cup – luckily 2 May is a public holiday. Also in May we are offering a new class in the pool – Aqua Fitness. This is aimed at everyone regardless of fitness level, age, gender or ability! Full details are on page 35. Members who have any comments or suggestions to make will be pleased to know that the Club Suggestion Books are now online and can be accessed through the home page. Just click on the link at the top right-hand corner of the home page and enter your suggestion or feedback in the suggestion book for the relevant Clubhouse. As we approach the warmer and sunnier summer weather I would like to remind members that their guests are not permitted to bring dogs to Middle Island at weekend and public holidays, and that in the interests of the enjoyment of all members, all dogs must be kept under control and on their leads at all times. Last but not least, the RHKYC Charity Foundation is recruiting native English-speaking volunteers to help to run an English language programme for underprivileged children. If you are interested in committing your time to help with this worthy initiative, please email [email protected] to register your interest.

Dear fellow members,

As previously reported in Ahoy!, the first two phases of the Kellett Island Development Project are progressing well. We will be opening the new building at the end of April, bringing the new Ship Shop, sail lockers, squash courts and administration offices / staff facilities into use.

Work on the new integrated central kitchen and first phase of the male and female members’ changing rooms in the Central Block is near completion and the new East Wing extension with the new bowling alley and gym is visibly growing by the day.

As with any project however, there are always elements that are impossible to predict until the construction work actually commences. This is particularly the case with projects of this scale and complexity; managing as we have, completely new-build elements with others which involve extensive work in and around an older building.

Unfortunately, 16 months into our project as we prepare to commence the final phase of the development, we have just encountered our first unforeseen and significant issue – the structural integrity of the west-facing wall of the (current) bowling alley.

To give you some background: before embarking on the project we undertook some trial pits in the area of the Bistro Terrace and also exposed the underlying masonry in a number of areas on the wall to try and understand the nature of the wall. Based on these inspections, we had originally understood it would be relatively easy to enlarge the existing windows to create doors leading onto a new west-facing balcony. More recent inspections have, however, identified issues with the existing brick wall structure that mean it cannot provide the necessary strength required and we must replace some parts with new reinforced concrete columns. This more invasive work will have a knock-on effect on the originally phased closure

10 | APRIL 2016 AHOY! and refurbishment of the Bistro vaults and the finishing of the new Central Block. The Project Steering Committee has been working closely over the last Kellett Island Development few weeks with our project managers, the architects and contractor to identify ways in which we can tackle this situation and core to all considerations has been how this can be achieved with the minimum amount of intrusion to members’ enjoyment of our facilities – as well as Feature | reducing the amount of time the works will take to complete. Needless to say, the project team has also been very focused on balancing these considerations against any cost impacts. Cautious and mindful deliberation of all the options is still ongoing Kellett IslandKellett Development but it looks like the best course of action is to close the Bistro entirely for a period of time to allow the Bistro and bowling alley wall work to be completed as quickly as possible – a course of activity which will minimise the overall duration of the project. We are very conscious that it will have a significant impact on members’ use of the Club and we will mitigate this as much as possible by providing alternative dining options in other areas of the Club such as the poolside, Main Lawn and Chart Room, and the new bowling alley when it is ready, so that we will not be without a casual dining venue altogether. The structural work on the west-facing wall will also trigger the closure of the existing bowling alley – however this was always part of the original project plan as we need to carry out the work required to move our current facility into its new home in the East Wing Extension and create the new function rooms in its place. The good news is that we will be able to provide additional temporary indoor and outdoor Bistro facilities in the new bowling alley and Waterside areas as soon as that building has been completed. We will then go back and install the bowling equipment once the refurbished and enlarged Bistro work has been completed. We had hoped to publish the final plan with timelines in this issue of Ahoy! but deliberations continue to ensure we reach the best possible solution and regrettably we have reached our printing deadline without having a final conclusion. We will keep members informed by email as to the final plan and the changes to facilities and access around the Clubhouse. FinCom has been monitoring the Club’s finances and projections very carefully and the project team has been keeping a very tight control over the project’s budget, so please be assured that we can manage through this impact. The Main Bar, Compass Room and swimming pool will remain open and unaffected throughout the works on the Bistro and the facilities at both Shelter Cove and Middle Island will also be unaffected by the Bistro closure. Particularly with regards to Middle Island on weekdays, we hope that members will make the most of its facilities during the Bistro closure as it really is a wonderful alternative at both lunchtime and in the evenings for casual dining. The General Committee and Club management fully appreciates the support which you, the members, have given the project to date. We recognise that this news is unwelcome and disappointing but trust that we can continue to rely on your support as we enter this very challenging period. A lot of members have given a lot of time and a lot of effort into keeping the project on track so it is particularly frustrating for them that we should encounter such an issue so late in the development programme. We must however look forward - ultimately we are creating some excellent new facilities which you will be proud of. I for one am very excited at the prospect of the first phase of the project completing and the new Ship Shop, squash courts and sail lockers opening very soon.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Whitehead From top: Sail lockers; Ship Shop interior; Squash courts taking shape; Commodore New meeting room

Hong Kong Race Week WORDS: NIKKI CLARINGBOLD | PHOTOS: HONG KONG RACE WEEK / GUY NOWELL

Under the auspices of the Hong Kong Sailing Federation and Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Hong Kong Race Week got underway this year boasting a record 225 entries. Spread across 10 classes, 247 sailors took to the water, representing China, Australia, Bulgaria, Chinese Taipei, Denmark, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom and the best Youth sailing talent from Hong Kong.

A constituent event of the ASAF Youth Cup, this year’s Hong Kong Race Week had a busy race schedule which proved challenging at times with this year’s varied conditions. Hong Kong’s finest race officers and their teams provided some excellent racing over five designated racecourse areas. PRO Charlie Manzoni summed up the week. “It was variable; everything from 1kt to 35kts and most boats experienced sailing each of the race course areas in order to sail in the optimum breeze. It’s been massively successful and there are a lot of very happy little sailors which is what it is all about.”

The Optimist Dinghy class, with 110 entries, Organiser Co-organiser provided the largest fleet on the water. This was one of the most competitive fleets, and several evenings mid-regatta were spent keeping the International Jury, led by Masa

14 | APRIL 2016 AHOY! Feature | Hong Kong Race Week

Tanaka of Japan, very busy. The Club’s own Duncan Gregor, Hong Kong’s number one ranked Optimist sailor, had his work cut out early on, challenged by young up and coming Chinese sailor Lesen Chen. With China and India fielding the largest teams of sailors at this year’s Hong Kong Race Week, it was expected that with 31 participants China would place well.

The varied conditions throughout the week culminated in the Optimist Class series winner being decided without the finale of the scheduled Medal race. On the last day of racing, with the forecast predicting deteriorating weather and with a significantly building breeze, the Silver fleet was kept on hold ashore for safety reasons with only the gold fleet heading out for their final three races of the regatta. With the breeze averaging 17kts and gusting through 28 to 30kts, it was a challenging day for the Optimist Gold Fleet. “It was fantastic to see the sailors handling the very windy conditions… their boats flew! We saw some very good racing under conditions not always common to Hong Kong,” said RO Sofia Mascia. heartening response for this match held on 22 February although it was a struggle to find our last man. We had six flights in total with match play; better ball once again being the traditional format. The handicapping proved to be very fair, with the FC generally giving us shots to make it a balanced competition.
