2010/11 Special Events at Mammoth Mountain October 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Daniel Hansen at 760.934.0645 or [email protected] 2010/11 Special Events at Mammoth Mountain Night of Lights – December 18, 2010 Mammoth Mountain is pleased to announce the return of the celebrated Night of Lights event on December 18, 2010. Originating nearly two decades ago, Night of Lights began as an annual celebration of winter in Mammoth Lakes. Today’s Night of Lights continues to be free to the public and celebrates the magic of snow with a winter lights show against the majestic backdrop of Mammoth’s ski slopes. Guests of all ages are invited to ride the complimentary Village Gondola to Canyon Lodge where they can enjoy a fun- filled night complete with firework show, torchlight parade, Red Bull skydivers, family activities in The Village at Mammoth and a concert at Canyon Lodge by Donavon Frankenreiter. 2011 U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix – March 2-6, 2011 Mammoth Mountain’s world-famous Unbound Terrain Parks will host the longest running domestic snowboard tour. Snowboarding Grand Prix March 2-6, 2011. Some of the best snowboarders in the world will compete for a prize purse of almost $200,000. Mammoth’s world-famous 22-foot Super Duper Pipe will provide an excellent stage on which to help determine the 2011 winners. Featuring halfpipe and slopestyle competitions, Mammoth will host Olympic gold medalists Kelly Clark, Hannah Teter, along with fellow Olympic medalists Gretchen Bleiler, Danny Kass and JJ Thomas. Roxy Chicken Jam – March 22-26, 2011 Mammoth Mountain is proud to announce that the 6th annual Roxy Chicken Jam will return to Mammoth Mountain, California March 22-26, 2011. As the largest all-female snowboarding contests held in the United States, the Roxy Chicken Jam draws a field of the best female snowboarders in the world. The three-day event will include both slopestyle and Superpipe competitions, as well as a free outdoor concert in the Village. Mammoth Invitational – April 8-10, 2011 After a successful inaugural event that raised over $250,000 to go toward the development of a new training facility for junior snow-sports athletes at Mammoth, the Mammoth Invitational will be returning April 8-10, 2011. The three-day event includes ski racing, on-mountain activities, banquets, a silent and live auction, an awards ceremony and more. Racers can test their skills with some serious competition, while more laid back competitors can shoot-it-out for some fun prizes. The event features top name US Ski Team athletes and other ski and non-ski celebrities as team captains with each team consisting of 4 athletes with a celebrity team captain. The teams will have a chance to compete in a race for great prizes and bragging rights. West Coast Invitational –May 6-8, 2011 For the ninth consecutive year, Mammoth Mountain’s award winning West Coast Invitational (WCI) returns May 6-8, 2011 with an explosive lineup of pro shredders and the most talented up-and-comers. These riders will be competing in the Fiesta de la Pipa and The Village Rail Jam for a $20,000 prize purse. Live entertainment ensures a non- stop spring party with music layered on the best West Coast spring pipe and rail contest for a stacked shredding weekend at Mammoth Mountain. Mammoth Motocross – June 16-26, 2011 Motocross riders from around the nation will take to the famed Mammoth Motocross Track this summer for the Ford Mammoth Motocross, June 16 – 26, 2011. This event draws some of the best riders in the world and is the longest continuously running motocross event in the United States. Mammoth Festival – August 19-21, 2011 Mammoth Festival celebrates the finer things in life: wine, music, food and art – all in the beautiful outdoor setting of ski resort turned summer destination Mammoth Lakes, California. The three-day festival, August 19-21, 2011, features live concerts, wine tasting from a variety of world-class vintners, food from fantastic local restaurants and an expo from local and regional artists. Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is the leading four-season mountain resort in California. With 1.2 million annual skier visits, Mammoth Mountain is currently the third most frequented ski resort in the United States.     Sports of The Winter Olympics: Snowboarding The Sport Packet #10 Halfpipe Competitors take off from the halfpipe’s rim, performing challenging aerial maneuvers, including flips, twists and spins. They complete each trick by traveling back and forth between the halfpipe’s walls. Athletes complete two runs. The event takes place in a semi-circular ditch, or half of a pipe, dug into the surface of a hill. The halfpipe is typically 110 meters long with 3 to 4 meter deep vertical sides, each on an 85 degree rounded slope. The width from wall to wall is 13 meters to 15 meters. The format for the men and women’s event is the same. Parallel Giant Slalom Two competitors race simultaneously side by side down two courses. They take two runs, switching sides after the first one. The setting of the courses, the configura- tion of the ground and the preparation of the snow must be as identical as possible. The format is the same for the men and women’s event. The vertical drop of the course must be between 120 meters and 200 meters. The number of turns should be equal to 11 percent to 15 percent of the vertical drop in meters. Athletes must navigate around gates, which are 20 meters to 25 meters apart. A gate consists of two poles - one outside pole and one turning pole. Triangular banners are fastened between the poles so lower edges of the flag touch the snow. The banner is 110 cm tall on its long side and 25 cm tall on the short side; its base length is 130 cm.

    No. 77. An act relating to designating skiing and snowboarding as the official winter state sports. (H.365) It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont: Sec. 1. FINDINGS In recognition of the importance that sports and fitness can play in the personal lives of Vermonters and in the economic well-being of the state, the general assembly finds: (1) The history of skiing and snowboarding is heavily linked to Vermont. (2) In 1934, the country’s first ski area opened near Woodstock when the first rope tow ski lift was installed on Clinton Gilbert’s farm. This was followed by many other historical Vermont firsts in the ski industry, including the nation’s first ski race which was held on Mount Mansfield in 1934, the nation’s first J-bar lift which was installed at Bromley Ski Area in 1936, the nation’s first ski patrol which was established at Stowe Ski Area in 1936, the nation’s first T-bar lift which was installed at Pico Peak Ski Area in 1940, and the nation’s first major chair lift which was installed at the Stowe Ski Area in 1940. (3) In 1938, C. Minot Dole founded the National Ski Patrol in Vermont. Dole later used the National Ski Patrol model to convince the U.S. Army to activate a division of American mountain soldiers on skis, known as the 10th VT LEG 277189.1 No. 77 Page 2 Mountain Division. Approximately 240 Vermonters served in the famed winter warfare division during World War II, with a dozen killed in action in the battle against the Germans in the Italian Alps.
