The Grand Canon, produced in digital format, renews and updates the monographic presentation of out-of-print inkprint editions of the Bibliography of the Grand Canyon and the Lower Colorado River by Earle E. Spamer (Grand Canyon Natural History Association, 1981, 1990, 1993). It complements but significantly elaborates upon on the online, searchable database (www.grandcanyonbiblio.org) sponsored by the Grand Canyon Association 2000–2019 (since 2018 the Grand Canyon Conservancy). PART 5. PUBLICATIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES (GRAND CANYON AND LOWER COLORADO RIVER REGIONS)

OVERVIEWSECTION 1. PUBLICATIONS PRODUCED ESPECIALLY FOR THE BLIND AND VISION-IMPAIRED Section 1: Publications produced especially for the blind and vision- impaired. This section⠍ Tactilecontains citations ✖ Book Format mostly for ● items Audio that are in large- print or Braille formats and audio materials made expressly by agencies who produce materials for the blind and vision-impaired. Other, unusual formats are included, too; for example, tactile material in Moon Type. Many citations have been derived from Library of Congress catalogue records, and of course this part of the bibliography should not be construed to be comprehensive because there are likely to be many products for this audience that are not in accessible catalogs.

Section 2: Conventional publications that relate to the experiences of the blind and vision-impaired. Unlike the publications cited in Section 1, these works are not in special formats for the blind or visually impaired, but are conventionally printed books and serials. Topically, they concern the experiences of blind and visually impaired people, and information of interest to them. Various citations may be repeated here from other parts of this bibliography.

Section 3: Publications that relate to people with hearing impairments. The publications cited here concern the experiences of the deaf and hearing impaired within the region covered by this bibliography. They are relegated to their own appendix also to bring attention to readers the perspectivess and needs of these people, who might otherwise be overlooked among other people with impairments. The citations are repeated here from other parts of this bibliography.

SECTION 1. PUBLICATIONS PRODUCED ESPECIALLY FOR THE BLIND AND VISION-IMPAIRED Section 4: Publications that relate to people with mobility or activity impairments. citations⠍ Tactile in this appendix ✖ Book Formatidentify those ● Audio publications that relate the Grand Canyon or Colorado River experiences of people with mobility or activity limitations, and publications that pertain to area travel information specifically for these people. By considering mobility or activity limitations as either physical or cognitive in nature as the result of congenital condition, chronic or accute disease, accident, or age-related condition, the definition embraces a wide spectrum of people. The citations are repeated here from other parts of this bibliography. Not included here are publications that pertain to people who may experience socially related difficulties; for example, at-risk youth or people with mental health concerns or social distresses like physical or sexual abuse and personal emotional troubles. Publications pertaining to any of these issues as they may be addressed within the region covered by this bibliography will be found in Part 14, which includes the subject area of sociology, and Part 15, which addresses various aspects of physical and mental health. However, publications pertaining to certain programs that can address either or both physical and emotional concerns—such as the Wounded Warrior programs that conduct therapeutic trips on the Colorado River for military veterans who are physically wounded or suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other emotional conflicts—are consolidated in this appendix, repeated from scattered citations in other parts of this bibliography. Sections 2–4 repeat citations that are included in other parts of the bibliography. Each citation is renumbered here with the PART 5. prefix.

While it might be desirable to include publications that are available in digital formats (for example, BRF, an electronicic Braille format for users with appropriate hardware or with speech output from digital files), most such products are only available online. (For more information see the Library of Congress webpage for BARD—the Braille and Audio and Reading Download from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) at https://www.loc.gov/nls/about/services/braille-audio-reading-download-bard/.) As with “ebooks” and similar products such as those that would be cited elsewhere in this bibliography, the fact that they may not be available in the future precludes their listing herein. Readers interested in these resources should consult their library for the blind or commercial websites that offer these products.

The general page layout for Section 1 is modeled after display pages on website of the Library of Congress’s National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, https://www.loc.gov/nls/. Some of the titles cited here may be accessible through NLS as digital sound recordings online.

PART 5. PUBLICATIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES (GRAND CANYON AND LOWER COLORADO RIVER REGIONS)

SECTION 4. PUBLICATIONS THAT RELATE TO PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY OR ACTIVITY LIMITATIONS

NOTE FOR PART 5, SECTION 4

THE citations in this appendix identify those publications that relate the Grand Canyon or Colorado River experiences of people with mobility or activity limitations, including those for medical reasons, and publications that pertain to area travel information specifically for these people. By considering mobility or activity limitations as either physical or cognitive in nature as the result of congenital condition, chronic or accute disease, accident, or age- related condition, the definition embraces a wide spectrum of people. The citations are repeated here from other parts of this bibliography.

Publications pertaining to certain programs that can address either or both physical and emotional concerns — such as the Wounded Warrior programs that conduct therapeutic trips on the Colorado River for military veterans who are physically wounded or suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other emotional conflicts — are consolidated in this appendix, repeated from scattered citations in other parts of this bibliography.

While some people may consider that publications by or about amputees, for example, who perform activities as well as fully-limbed people, should not be itemized in this Section, they often speak of special functions or devices—sometimes personal perseverence—that allow them to be successful in these activities. Accordingly, the publications are added here for the sake of readers who may be inspired or interested by them.

Also not included in this section are items that pertain to people with medical conditions that encouraged them to “take on” special pursuits; for example, cancer survivors wishing to hike Grand Canyon in the aftermath of treatment.

This case study subject was abandoned due to some last minute cancelations with the group’s amputee participants. The decision to monitor the volume fluctuations within the amputee members’ residual limbs was made. The amputee and non-amputee members within the group were also tracked for their falls throughout the trip. In addition to the fall count and residual limb measurements, the number of times an amputee had to stop and remove their prosthesis was counted.”]
