Dear Friends,

Much of the time these days I’m really anxious. Even though my immediate personal circumstances are ok, I can’t stop worrying about the more vulnerable members of my family, both young and old. By the time you read this, the American election will be over (though the final result may still be uncertain). That whole country seems to be so mired in mutual hostility and anger that whoever wins, I fear there will be trouble, and trouble in America affects the rest of the world. By the time you read this, yet another region of our country may be in tier 3, there will have been more deaths, more pressure on the health services, and more people losing their jobs. And if all that weren’t enough, we have the challenge of post-Brexit negotiations and continuing concerns about the environment.

So, what am I to do? I have recently been reading spiritual writings dating from long ago, full of advice about how to pray and live a good life. They all seem so calm, hopeful and controlled. And then occasionally the writer lets drop that they are writing in the midst of famine, warfare, or plague. These

1

conditions were perhaps even more common in ancient times than they are today, and governments even less capable of dealing with them.

We all live on a knife-edge, and there may always be trouble present or round the corner. But for those of us who have a Christian faith these days of trouble and anxiety through which we are presently living should not distract us from the regular business of saying our prayers and trying to love our neighbours; and from the need to keep in our hearts the hope so beautifully expressed by the medieval writer Dame Julian of Norwich, that in the good purposes of God ‘All shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.’

Church of Services in Fountains Benefice November 2020

We will be holding short services of Holy Communion (sharing the bread only) on the following dates. We hope you can join us:

Face coverings are currently obligatory at services

Sunday 1 Nov 11.15 am Mickley Church Wednesday 4 Nov 10.30 am Sawley Church

Sunday 8 Nov Remembrance Sunday – no Communion Service, but: 10.50 am service outside Grewelthorpe Church 10.50 am service outside Kirkby Malzeard Church 11.30 am service at the memorial in Winksley Churchyard

Please note: current coronavirus restrictions mean we cannot include all the normal elements of our Remembrance services. 2

We hope that Remembrance services will run as planned, but due to the new restrictions, other public worship is suspended for the time being.

We also continue our Sunday morning Zoom services (and other services at home) at 10 am (5 pm on Remembrance Sunday) – please contact Revd Ian Kitchen on 01765 650369 if you would like to join us.

A slice of hope The pandemic continues and the weather gets darker. We all need our spirits picking up once in a while. If you feel a free slice of tray bake and a card with a Christian blessing or prayer on would help you through a day, just email [email protected] or phone 01765 650369 and say ‘I’d like a slice of hope’, with your name and address. We’ll get it to you as soon as we can – we’ll aim for the same day although occasionally it may have to be the next day. Feel free to ask for more than one slice if the family need cheering up. It’s likely to be chocolate brownie, flapjack or a coffee slice (tell us about preferences or allergies). Unfortunately, we can’t manage gluten-free or diabetic-friendly at the moment – but we’ll happily bring the card without cake to cheer you up anyway.

Annual Church Meetings Our annual church meetings have now all taken place. We are very grateful to all who have filled positions of responsibility of any kind over the past year or so. Particular thanks go to churchwardens who have now stood down: Julia Watson at Sawley, Stuart Wakefield at Winksley and Frances Cole at Mickley. Our churchwardens now are: Aldfield: Bernice Ferguson Grewelthorpe: Lynette Barnes and Ann Dant Kirkby Malzeard: Michael Atkinson Mickley: Frances Cole and Roger Higson

Sawley: Christine Dent Winksley: Brenda Bell and Bridget North. Their contact details can be found on the website or at church.

Harvest thanks Many thanks to everyone who donated items for the Ripon Food Bank at the benefice harvest service at the end of September. A total of 39.5 kg (6 stone 3 pounds) of produce was given, and very much appreciated. Well done, everyone!

The great Dallowgill register mystery If anyone knows where we might be able to find the burial register for the Chapel of the Resurrection, Ian would very much like to know! All bright ideas welcome on 01765 650369, or [email protected].

Worship with us At the moment we are still sharing in a service of Morning Worship each week at 10.00 am, using the video-conferencing tool Zoom. If you'd like to join us, please contact Rev Ian Kitchen for more information ([email protected]). Even if you haven't used Zoom before, it isn't difficult and Ian will be able to help you sort it out. The Zoom service on Remembrance Sunday 8th will be at 5.00 pm. If you are not computer-savvy or you'd rather follow a service on your own we can let you have it via email or by paper through your letter box. A growing band of people are doing this at 10 am each week to build the sense that we are all worshipping together. Email or telephone Ian for more details: 01765 650369. Our new service of contemplative prayer begins this month. See details elsewhere in the magazine.

Bible study We are running a Bible study group by Zoom on Wednesday evenings from 7.30. If you’d like to join us, or would be interested in a similar study at another time, let Ian know. 4

We will also be starting a new discussion group this month. See details elsewhere in the magazine.

More technology! The benefice Facebook page is called Fountains Benefice and is at https://www.facebook.com/fountains.benefice.7 Our website is called Fountains Group of Churches and can be found at http://fountainsgroupofchurches.co.uk/ Every church has another page on the web, through the site called achurchnearyou. You can find our daily reflections and prayers on all these sites. Please do explore them and see what is there.

Funerals

The Benefice Book Group Great rejoicing this month when a few of us were able to meet again at last ---- socially distanced, of course! We were so pleased to meet again that we almost forgot to discuss "The Seven Sisters" by Lucinda Riley but when we finally got round to it there was lots to say.

It`s certainly a very long book but it is also a real page turner and only the first of a series so we have plenty to look forward to. The plot moves back and forth between Europe and South America and back and forth in time so you need to keep your wits about you. We all felt that we were anxious to know what happened next. 5

Some of us felt that the characters were not entirely credible, but it really doesn`t matter. The plot`s the thing. It begins with a fascinating mystery which, far from being resolved, at the end has deepened. Roll on book two "The Storm Sister". I for one can`t wait.

Next month we will read "My Sister the Serial Killer" by Oyinkan Braithwaite and we are keeping our fingers crossed that we will be able to meet to discuss it

Girlguiding Fountains We are back to our regular meetings, but still on zoom, with activities on alternate weeks for Rainbows and Brownies. The activity drops take place at end of school or via a superb chain of volunteers. We are still managing to follow the programme through the adapted activities produced by Girlguiding for zoom. Halloween baking featured heavily at Rainbows with a wonderful array of spiders, while Brownies tested their ability to read the jelly making instructions making slime pots. There have also been a number of craft activities, which are based round Halloween, and painting a stone of Remembrance. Sadly, this year we are unable to attend any service as a unit. The risk assessments at HQ have shown that the risk to our members and others is too high to allow us to attend. We will still be thinking of all those who lost their lives and will have poppies in our windows and painted stones will be left at the Churches in our Benefice.

Knife, fork and spoon has proved to be a very popular game on zoom and I am pleased to report there have been no injuries from the forks. The rainbows have also enjoyed ‘Olivia says’ a version of Simon says using the Rainbow doll to help.

Children in Need is our next big project. We are joining in to raise money for Children in Need, and those in Guiding, who need specialist help in order to take part or cannot because of deprivation. We are all challenged to act our age, so we will be taking up relevant challenges age e.g. 7 years - run 7 km/miles, 7 minutes of skipping, bake 7 cakes etc and we are asked to collect donations/ sponsors for our activities. The parents will have details of how to donate should you wish to do so.

7

Anyone wishing to start Rainbows, Brownies or Guides can contact Anne Harrison on 01765 620346 for more details or follow this link https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-for-parents/register-your-daughter/

Aldfield

I am pleased to report that Aldfield Church is in action again after being re- decorated. We are very pleased with the result and the expertise of the decorators. The first service after the re-opening was on October 4th when there was a well-attended Communion Service at which the four church wardens for Fountains Parish were admitted into their roles. The next service was unusual and very moving when Brian Yeoman was buried in the church yard. A good number attended and fortunately the weather was dry with no wind. Mr Yeoman worked on the Fountains Estate when it was owned by the Vyner family. He had lived all his life at Studley and Ripon.

Our next service will be on October 28th at 10.30.

Thank you to those who arrange flowers prior to the Services and to David who plays the organ before and after. Also, many thanks to our volunteer who mow the grass in the church yard. This was especially appreciated when the out-door funeral was taking place.

The church is open for visitors except for the few days after a service when it is in quarantine.

These Communion Services, normally taken by Ian, are much appreciated by those who feel able to attend.

GREWELTHORPE VILLAGE HALL NOVEMBER

The Hackfall Café The Hackfall Cafe, in the Village Hall, continues to operate on a takeaway basis, offering hot and cold drinks and a selection of cold snacks such as sandwich rolls, home-made tray bakes, fruit, crisps and cheese.

During November we are open Monday to Friday between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, but we will keep this under review, dependent on demand. We hope to offer indoor seating as soon as we can provide a safe environment within the Covid restrictions. Face coverings are not mandatory as long as customers remain outdoors to place their order and pay. If people come inside the building to use the toilet facilities, then face coverings need to be worn.

All our planning has been carried out following the Government’s rules regarding takeaway cafes. Our customers and staff can be assured that a full risk assessment has been undertaken and all the measures to satisfy safety guidelines in terms of social distancing and hygiene are in place.

For general enquiries about café opening hours please contact Deborah Hodges 01765 658474

Community Lunch Tuesday 10th November, 12 noon. Have a homemade 2 course hot dinner and pudding DELIVERED to you by our friendly Hackfall Cafe volunteers. £5 per person. Village Hall Bookings Plans for the introduction of an upgrade to the Village Hall website, to include an online Hall Booking system, are progressing well and will soon be available. The upgrade will provide information on the Terms and Conditions of hire and the charges for the various facilities. 9

Having done a detailed assessment of the floor space in the various rooms, we have produced a range of options which comply with the latest Government guidelines. We have a cleaning regime in operation specifically aimed at protection from Covid 19 and the procedures for entry and exit to the building are in place and are working well.

For those wishing to use the Hall and other facilities, we will need to know that a risk assessment, specific to the planned activity, has been completed and safeguards put in place to protect the hirer, the clients and other hall users.

If you would like more information or would like to discuss individual requirements, please phone Edward Threapleton on 01765 658744 or email [email protected]
