THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2007 VOL. 100, NO. 139 ● SINCE 1908 Relay For Life raises over $35K in marathon Students walk for 12 hours in annual fundraiser against cancer

Rebecca Wilson THE DAILY GAMECOCK

USC students raised more than $35,000 by staying up all night Friday in Relay For Life: a 12-hour walk-a- thon to raise money for the American Cancer Society, a member of the executive committee said. Gwyn Pauley, a third-year math student and part of Relay for Life’s executive committee, said the final total hasn’t been announced yet. From 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., teams lapped the track at Blatt Field, but the event started months in advance as leaders organized teams and planned fundraisers that included poster- making, sheet-stamping and cake-baking. The Survivors Lap kicked off the event with a lap by cancer survivors. People cheered as survivors took their lap around the course. This was followed by the Luminary Ceremony, a key part of the relay.
