CANCER For the second-straight season, the Buck- nell football program teamed with Vs. Cancer to bring awareness to pediatric cancer and raise funds to support the cause. The Bison, who a year ago became the first collegiate football program at any level to team with Vs. Cancer, will celebrate their 2019 efforts during their game against Princeton. Bucknell again selected Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital to receive 50 percent of donation proceeds. The other 50 percent will be used to fund ground-breaking brain tumor research efforts through the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. As part of their partnership with Vs. Cancer, the Bison welcomed 12-year-old cancer sur- vivor Madeline Cross and her mother, Brenda Hill, to practice on September 19. At that same practice, fifth-year captain Alex Pechin, juniors Simon Krizak and Simeon Page, sophomore Renn Lints and freshmen Cooper Kim, Seth Pletcher and Hayden Snyder shaved their heads to raise pediatric cancer awareness. “I chose to shave my head again this year so I could help raise awareness for this great cause,” said Lints, who also shaved his head as part of 2018’s fundraising efforts. “Cancer is something that has affected both my family and friends. I want all of the children who are bat- tling cancer to know they are not alone in their fight. If shaving my head is something I can do to make a difference, I hope other people will do the same.” Pletcher had been growing out his hair since seventh grade. As part of Bucknell’s head shaving initiative, he cut it off to benefit Wigs for Kids. “Even though it meant cutting of something that’s been apart of me for six years, being able to show support for those battling cancer was a no-brainer for me,” Pletcher said. “I wanted to give back to a person and their family who have been struck by this terrible disease.” Bucknell football players and coaches also visited patients and their families at Janet Weis Children’s Hospital on August 19 as part of their partnership with Vs. Cancer.

Collegiate football is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019. The Bucknell football program, which is in its 134th season of competition, is one of the oldest in the country. In November of 1883, a group of students from Lafayette College journeyed west to play a group from the University at Lewisburg in the relatively new sport of football. The players from Lewisburg, whose school would be renamed Bucknell University in 1886, lost that first game, 59-0. Perhaps because of that experience, their school did not play another official game until 1887. Still, the seeds had been planted for a program that would grow into one of the most respected programs in the East by the 1950s. Scores of marvelous players have since donned the Orange and Blue, and each season gives rise to new names, new heroes and ® new legends. BUCKNELLBISON.COM >> @BUCKNELL_FB >> ATTITUDE >> CHARACTER >> TOUGHNESS 2019 BUCKNELL FOOTBALL MEDIA NOTES >>>> 16 CHRISTY MATHEWSON-MEMORIAL STADIUM CELEBRATES 95 YEARS The Bucknell football team plays its home games in a picturesque, 95-year-old stadium that pays tribute to its university’s numerous war veterans and one of its most distinguished alumni. The stadium, dedicated in 1924 in honor of Buck- nellians who served the United States during the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I, was renovated and renamed in 1989 to recognize perhaps Bucknell’s most honored alumnus and one of the true heroes of American sports. Christy Mathewson was one of the five original members of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. but gained his initial athletic fame as a fullback, punter and dropkicker at Bucknell from 1898 to 1900. One of the truly outstanding players of his era, Mathewson kicked a point-after touchdown in the first varsity game of his freshman year and in the next three years added 13 touchdowns and eight field goals. Mathewson gained national attention when he dropkicked two field goals against Pennsylvania in 1899 and added a 45-yard field goal against Army the following year. As a result, he was named the “12th man” on Walter Camp’s 1900 All-America team. The facility that bears Mathewson’s name has seen plenty of transformation over the last few decades. A new locker room and weight room were constructed in 1987. The locker room was later fully renovated in the summer of 2017. The Tom Gadd Weight Room was updated with brand new equipment in 1999 and again in 2014, allowing Bison players an outstanding facility for daily use and weight training. In 1988, the horseshoe edifice was totally resur- faced and new seating was added. New concession stands, restrooms, ticket booths and souvenir stands were added a year later, along with an eight-lane, CIRCA 1920 CIRCA 1940 all-weather track, which was resurfaced in 2017. The section at the south end of the stadium was landscaped in 1988, and a new scoreboard and message board were added. Other upgrades include new lights, which feature a nearly 10-fold increase in candle power. A FieldTurf playing surface was initially installed in the summer of 2001 as a gift from Norm Garrity ’63 and his wife, Mary Lou (Roepel) ’64. That surface was replaced during the summer of 2012 with state-of-the- art synthetic grass. Notably, Bucknell was one of the first Division I schools to install FieldTurf as a full-time playing surface in a football stadium. CIRCA 1955 CIRCA 1970 In 2019, Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium will celebrate its 95th year and 30th year since its rechristening. Sanders’s play and the energy displayed on the Bison sideline were highlights of head coach Aug. 31 >> Philadelphia, Pa. >> Lincoln Financial Field >> 3 p.m. >> Attendance: 26,378 Dave Cecchini’s debut. The Owls, Bucknell’s first FBS opponent since 2015, used stout defensive play, particularly in the first quarter, and a banner game by quarterback Anthony Russo to take the first meeting between the once long-time rivals since 1970. “I’m really proud of how we sustained our effort in the second half,” Cecchini said. “We had some great drives on offense. We moved the football but couldn’t finish. We made some three- and-outs on defense, and we did it playing a lot of third-team guys. Unfortunately, we gave up a couple of big plays, and that was young guys making mistakes. We can live with that.” Temple (1-0) set the tone early, covering 75 yards in 12 plays to score a touchdown on its opening drive. By the end of the first quarter, the Owls held a 21-0 lead; they posted 229 yards of total offense and 12 first downs while limiting the Bison to a single first down and 22 passing yards. Bucknell (0-1) chipped away at Temple’s edge during the second quarter. After the Owls scored a touchdown on their first possession of that frame to make it a 28-0 game, the Bison put together the next two scoring plays. Pringle’s pick 6 gave the Bison new life with 8:13 on the clock. The freshman stepped in front of a Russo pass and dashed 36 yards up the sideline to the end zone; a failed extra point kept the score at 28-6. Bucknell’s defense forced a punt on Temple’s next possession. John Chiarolanzio then en- gineered an eight-play, 60-yard drive capped by a 37-yard Ethan Torres field goal; the highlight of that drive was a sprawling, one-handed grab by Sanders on a Chiarolanzio deep ball that advanced the Bison 42 yards to the red zone. The Owls ultimately went into the intermission up by a 35-9 margin after Russo found Re’Mahn Davis for a 51 yard touchdown with 1:02 remaining in the half. There’s some good takeaways from the game, but overall it was a disappointing outcome.” After a scoreless first quarter, the teams traded field goals to make it a 3-3 game at the second quarter’s 7:50 mark. At halftime, the Wildcats held a 28-0 lead, scoring two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters. They opened the scoring in the first 22 seconds when Jaquan Amos picked off Buck- nell’s third pass of the game and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. The Bison made two trips to the red zone during the first quarter but couldn’t put points on the board. Their first trip happened after Rick Mottram picked off his first career pass; Brandon Benson deflected the pass, which Mottram dove to catch at Villanova’s 21-yard line. The Wildcat defense ultimately held fast, forcing Bucknell to attempt a 23-yard field goal; that bid sailed wide left at the first quarter’s 7:39 mark. Later on, John Chiarolanzio found a wide-open Blais Herman for a 59-yard gain to the Wildcat 19. Three short gains later, the Bison found themselves facing 4th and 2 at the Villanova 10; line- backers Forrest Rhyne and Amin Black stuffed Chad Freshnock a yard shy of a first down, giving their team the ball back at their 10. And, one play later, the Wildcats were deep in Bucknell territory. Covington, who is among the FCS’s top rushing threats, rattled off a 64-yard run to the Bison 26; that play set up a 23-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Todd Summers at the first quarter’s 1:38 mark. During the second frame, Villanova tacked on touchdowns at the 13:19 and 5:50 marks. The Wildcats’ first touchdown, a three-yard quarterback keeper by Smith, came after they took over deep in the Bucknell end following a failed fake punt. The second, a six-yard pass from Smith to Changa Hodge, was set up by a Drew Wiley interception in Bison territory. Bucknell had a chance to chip away at Villanova’s lead in the final three minutes of the second quarter. The Wildcats were forced to punt from their own end zone after Simeon Page sacked TEAM STATISTICS GAME NOTES Smith for a loss of nine yards at their one.
