The Bison (1-4, 1-0 PL) built a 19-7 lead on a 36-yard touchdown rush by Jared Sept. 29, 2018 >> Worcester, Mass. >> Fitton Field >> 1 p.m. >> Attendance: 8,275 Cooper and a 22-yard touchdown throw by Logan Bitikofer to Alan Butler. While the Crusaders (1-4, 0-2 PL) responded with a safety and a touchdown of their own to draw within a field goal at the 6:57 mark of the fourth quarter, Bucknell’s offense drained 6:13 off the clock by marching from its 18-yard line to Holy Cross’s 26 in 13 plays. Following a missed 43-yard field goal attempt, the Crusaders got the ball back with 36 seconds remaining in regulation. After Geoff Wade had three passes fall incomplete, Holy Cross went for it on 4th and 10. Joe Lauro came up with his second pass breakup of the sequence to seal the victory, leveling Richie DeNicola at midfield and knocking the ball away in the process. Cooper, who was awarded the Johnny Turco Memorial Trophy as the Most Outstanding Player of Holy Cross’s Homecoming Day Game, led the Bison with 75 yards on 24 carries. All but 19 of his yards came during the Bison’s second-half surge, which saw them post 205 of their season-best 280 yards of total offense. At halftime, Bucknell trailed by a 7-6 margin. The Bison took their first lead of the game at the third quarter’s 9:25 mark on Cooper’s first career touchdown. The freshman broke two tackles and then out- raced two Crusaders to the end zone, giving Bucknell a 12-7 advantage; the Bison attempted a two-point conversion, but Bitikofer’s pass fell incomplete. A clutch fumble recovery by Roger Mellado at Holy Cross’s 27-yard line set up Butler’s second touchdown of the season. That score, which came with 11:06 remaining in regulation, proved to be the difference as the Crusaders came roaring back. On the possession after Butler’s diving touchdown, Wade hit DeNicola in stride for a 72-yard gain. DeNicola appeared destined for the end zone, but Lauro and Bryan Marine caught him at the Bison’s 10-yard line, setting up their goal-line stand. After Domenic Cozier picked up nine yards on two carries to bring the Crusaders to the one-yard line, Mellado stopped Wade on 3rd and 1 and Marine and Page teamed to halt Cozier on 4th and 1 to give Bucknell the ball back. Holy Cross picked up a safety two plays later to cut its deficit to 19-9. After forcing the Bison to go three and out on their next possession, Wade found DeNicola for a 59-yard touchdown to make it a 19-16 game. During the first quarter, the Crusaders limited the Bison to 21 yards of total offense and a single first down. They jumped out to the lead at the 4:46 mark, with Cozier muscling his way into the end zone from seven yards out to cap an 11-play, 81-yard drive. Collegiate football is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019. The Bucknell football program, which is in its 134th season of competition, is one of the oldest in the country. In November of 1883, a group of students from Lafayette College journeyed west to play a group from the University at Lewisburg in the relatively new sport of football. The players from Lewisburg, whose school would be renamed Bucknell University in 1886, lost that first game, 59-0. Perhaps because of that experience, their school did not play another official game until 1887. Still, the seeds had been planted for a program that would grow into one of the most respected programs in the East by the 1950s. Scores of marvelous players have since donned the Orange and Blue, and each season gives rise to new names, new heroes and ® new legends. BUCKNELLBISON.COM >> @BUCKNELL_FB >> ATTITUDE >> CHARACTER >> TOUGHNESS 2019 BUCKNELL FOOTBALL MEDIA NOTES >>>> 16 CHRISTY MATHEWSON-MEMORIAL STADIUM CELEBRATES 95 YEARS The Bucknell football team plays its home games in a picturesque, 95-year-old stadium that pays tribute to its university’s numerous war veterans and one of its most distinguished alumni. The stadium, dedicated in 1924 in honor of Buck- nellians who served the United States during the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I, was renovated and renamed in 1989 to recognize perhaps Bucknell’s most honored alumnus and one of the true heroes of American sports. Christy Mathewson was one of the five original members of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. but gained his initial athletic fame as a fullback, punter and dropkicker at Bucknell from 1898 to 1900. One of the truly outstanding players of his era, Mathewson kicked a point-after touchdown in the first varsity game of his freshman year and in the next three years added 13 touchdowns and eight field goals. Mathewson gained national attention when he dropkicked two field goals against Pennsylvania in 1899 and added a 45-yard field goal against Army the following year. As a result, he was named the “12th man” on Walter Camp’s 1900 All-America team. The facility that bears Mathewson’s name has seen plenty of transformation over the last few decades. A new locker room and weight room were constructed in 1987. The locker room was later fully renovated in the summer of 2017. The Tom Gadd Weight Room was updated with brand new equipment in 1999 and again in 2014, allowing Bison players an outstanding facility for daily use and weight training. In 1988, the horseshoe edifice was totally resur- faced and new seating was added. New concession stands, restrooms, ticket booths and souvenir stands were added a year later, along with an eight-lane, CIRCA 1920 CIRCA 1940 all-weather track, which was resurfaced in 2017. The section at the south end of the stadium was landscaped in 1988, and a new scoreboard and message board were added. Other upgrades include new lights, which feature a nearly 10-fold increase in candle power. A FieldTurf playing surface was initially installed in the summer of 2001 as a gift from Norm Garrity ’63 and his wife, Mary Lou (Roepel) ’64. That surface was replaced during the summer of 2012 with state-of-the- art synthetic grass. Notably, Bucknell was one of the first Division I schools to install FieldTurf as a full-time playing surface in a football stadium. CIRCA 1955 CIRCA 1970 In 2019, Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium will celebrate its 95th year and 30th year since its rechristening. Sanders’s play and the energy displayed on the Bison sideline were highlights of head coach Aug. 31 >> Philadelphia, Pa. >> Lincoln Financial Field >> 3 p.m. >> Attendance: 26,378 Dave Cecchini’s debut. The Owls, Bucknell’s first FBS opponent since 2015, used stout defensive play, particularly in the first quarter, and a banner game by quarterback Anthony Russo to take the first meeting between the once long-time rivals since 1970. “I’m really proud of how we sustained our effort in the second half,” Cecchini said. “We had some great drives on offense. We moved the football but couldn’t finish. We made some three- and-outs on defense, and we did it playing a lot of third-team guys. Unfortunately, we gave up a couple of big plays, and that was young guys making mistakes. We can live with that.” Temple (1-0) set the tone early, covering 75 yards in 12 plays to score a touchdown on its opening drive. By the end of the first quarter, the Owls held a 21-0 lead; they posted 229 yards of total offense and 12 first downs while limiting the Bison to a single first down and 22 passing yards. Bucknell (0-1) chipped away at Temple’s edge during the second quarter. After the Owls scored a touchdown on their first possession of that frame to make it a 28-0 game, the Bison put together the next two scoring plays. Pringle’s pick 6 gave the Bison new life with 8:13 on the clock. The freshman stepped in front of a Russo pass and dashed 36 yards up the sideline to the end zone; a failed extra point kept the score at 28-6. Bucknell’s defense forced a punt on Temple’s next possession. John Chiarolanzio then en- gineered an eight-play, 60-yard drive capped by a 37-yard Ethan Torres field goal; the highlight of that drive was a sprawling, one-handed grab by Sanders on a Chiarolanzio deep ball that advanced the Bison 42 yards to the red zone. The Owls ultimately went into the intermission up by a 35-9 margin after Russo found Re’Mahn Davis for a 51 yard touchdown with 1:02 remaining in the half. SACRED HEART 0 23 0 7 30 The Pioneers (1-1) scored three unanswered touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the second quarter to flip a 3-3 tie into a 23-3 advantage. That flurry proved to be the difference in the Sept. 7 >> Fairfield, Conn. >> Campus Field >> 6 p.m. >> Attendance: 4,187 game, as the Bison (0-2) would only draw as close as 13 points the rest of the way. Julius Chestnut was a standout performer for Sacred Heart, factoring into three touchdowns. The sophomore ran for 162 yards and one touchdown and also caught two of Logan Marchi’s three touchdown throws. Marchi, a former Temple player, finished the game with 316 yards on 21-for-37 passing. For Bucknell, Dominic Lyles was a breakout performer, catching five passes for 98 yards and a 50-yard touchdown. While the Bison again utilized three quarterbacks, John Chiarolanzio proved the most productive, throwing for 141 yards on 14-for-29 passing. “That’s a good football team,” said head coach Dave Cecchini of Sacred Heart. “They’re going to make a lot of noise in their quest for a NEC Championship. There’s some good takeaways from the game, but overall it was a disappointing outcome.” After a scoreless first quarter, the teams traded field goals to make it a 3-3 game at the second quarter’s 7:50 mark. Just over a minute after Ethan Torres’s 31-yard field goal evened the score for Bucknell, Chestnut broke free for an 86-yard touchdown run. Then, the Pioneers recovered an on-side kick, giving them the ball right back on the Bison 33. They capitalized three plays later, with Marchi completing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Tyrese Chambers with 6:26 on the clock. Trailing 17-3, Bucknell began to march up the field. We’ve certainly played as tough of a non-conference schedule as anybody so far, and we’re not done yet. Despite that, we’ve continue to play better football, more consistent football. There’s a lot to be positive about. We’re going to keep moving forward. We may have some temporary setbacks here or there, but we’re going to keep our eyes on the prize.” The Bison (0-4) got off to a strong start, holding the high-powered Tigers to just 79 yards of total offense and a single touchdown in the first quarter. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead at that frame’s 6:57 mark after stuffing Princeton on a 4th and 1; Roger Mellado and Gerrit Van Itallie combined for the tackle that gave Bucknell the ball at midfield. But Samuel Wright came up with a sack for a loss of nine yards on 3rd and 7, pushing Bucknell back to the Tiger 31. Ultimately, a 48-yard field goal attempt came up short. Princeton then took its first lead of the contest, with Davidson finding Andrew Griffin twice in a row for 69 yards.
