Volume 12, Issue 1 May 2015 Mapping networks of influence: Tracking Twitter conversations through time and space Alistair Willis, Open University, UK Ali Fisher, Independent Researcher Ilia Lvov, University of St. Andrews, Scotland Abstract: The increasing use of social media around global news events, such as the London Olympics in 2012, raises questions for international broadcasters about how to engage with users via social media in order to best achieve their individual missions. Twitter is a highly diverse social network whose conversations are multi-directional involving individual users, political and cultural actors, athletes and a range of media professionals. In so doing, users form networks of influence via their interactions affecting the ways that information is shared about specific global events. This article attempts to understand how networks of influence are formed among Twitter users, and the relative influence of global news media organisations and information providers in the Twittersphere during such global news events.

Town of Westwood, MA Citizen Engagement Prepared by: Jorge Pazos Office of Municipal and School Technology Executive Office of Technology Services and Security (EOTSS) Westwood Town Hall 1 Introduction The Town of Westwood, Massachusetts has a population of 14,618 residents 2. Located in Norfolk County, Westwood is situated at the junction of Interstates 95 and 93 and has two commuter rail lines providing its residents with easy access to Boston in a beautiful suburban setting. The Town of Westwood adopted the Citizen Engagement Best Practice in January of 2017, as part of a Community Compact agreement signed with the Baker-Polito Administration. Through the Citizen Engagement Best Practice, the Town strived to better engage and inform the public through an enhanced online presence and two-way communication. This report summarizes the Town’s work towards improving citizen engagement. The Challenge Westwood faced several challenges in its efforts to have meaningful communication with its constituents. One specific challenge is the decline of local print media. The challenges facing print media have been well documented and Westwood was no exception as it experienced a decline in local print media over the last few years. Up until a few years ago local print media for Westwood included a daily and weekly paper, The Daily Transcript and The Westwood Press . The Daily Transcript ceased its print 1 https://www.facebook.com/TownofWestwood/ 2 https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/community_facts.xhtml publication, moving to a weekly and eventually an online only version 3. Local leadership found that past practices such as posting notices or ads in the local paper were becoming less effective means of communicating with residents.

December 4, 2017 The Hon. Wilbur L. Ross, Jr., Secretary United States Department of Commerce 1401 Constitution Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. 20230 Re: Uncoated Groundwood Paper from Canada, Inv. Nos. C–122–862 and A-122-861 Dear Secretary Ross: On behalf of the thousands of employees working at the more than 1,100 newspapers that we publish in cities and towns across the United States, we urge you to heavily scrutinize the antidumping and countervailing duty petitions filed by North Pacific Paper Company (NORPAC) regarding uncoated groundwood paper from Canada, the paper used in newspaper production. We believe that these cases do not warrant the imposition of duties, which would have a very severe impact on our industry and many communities across the United States. NORPAC’s petitions are based on incorrect assessments of a changing market, and appear to be driven by the short-term investment strategies of the company’s hedge fund owners. The stated objectives of the petitions are flatly inconsistent with the views of the broader paper industry in the United States. The print newspaper industry has experienced an unprecedented decline for more than a decade as readers switch to digital media. Print subscriptions have declined more than 30 percent in the last ten years. Although newspapers have successfully increased digital readership, online advertising has proven to be much less lucrative than print advertising. As a result, newspapers have struggled to replace print revenue with online revenue, and print advertising continues to be the primary revenue source for local journalism. If Canadian imports of uncoated groundwood paper are subject to duties, prices in the whole newsprint market will be shocked and our supply chains will suffer.

Y6 Information Text: Biography Example Text Tom Daley Have you ever wondered how athletes become so skilled at their sport? Do you ever wish you could be like them? Well, Tom Daley, Olympic medal winning diver, did just that. He has shown determination and ambition from a very young age. Introduction British diver Tom Daley has represented his country in many competitions worldwide, including three Olympic Games. He specialises in platform dives - both as a solo athlete and in synchronised events. Family and Early Life Thomas Robert Daley was born in Plymouth on 21st May 1994. His father, Rob, trained as an electrician while his mother (Debbie) was a housewife. Tom is their eldest child: his two brothers, William and Ben, are three and five years younger than him. Tom attended local schools and, despite his education being interrupted by competitions, he still achieved great exam results at his secondary school. Sporting Beginnings Having learned to swim at the age of four, Tom then began diving lessons at his local pool aged seven. Although, he was also keen on other sports including judo. He was soon spotted by diving coach Andy Banks, who became his trainer when Tom was eight years old. From that age onwards, Tom was part of an increasingly intensive training regime – including regular lessons and training camps in other cities. He has admitted that he found being away from home very difficult as a young child, and when Tom was placed in a competitive squad and began travelling to diving events, his father decided he would give up his job and accompany Tom on the road; had he not been there, Tom might not have become so successful.
