It is with joy and immense gratitude that we look back upon the 2017-2018 academic year at Riverside Presbyterian Day School. As you will see in the pages of this Riverside Review, last year was an outstanding and engaging one for the entire RPDS community. Having taken time to reflect after a full year of participating in the traditions, activities, and programming that define this extraordinary school, I can speak with personal experience when I share that RPDS is indeed a special place and one that rightfully fills a unique niche within the Jacksonville area for our children and families. It is truly a warm and welcoming community where love and learning go hand in hand. The many accomplishments of this year are a result of the collaboration of the Board of Trustees, the faculty and administration, and the generous and committed families and alumni. The contributions of all are a testament to the strength of this community and the value of this extraordinary foundational RPDS experience. It is gratifying to know that so many share a commitment to the educational experience being provided to our children and to helping us fulfill the mission of “educating the mind, nurturing the spirit, and fostering the development of the whole child.” It is through our collective efforts that we will continue to thrive and remain in the position to provide our children with the resources and dynamic education necessary to prepare them for the future. The pages of this review highlight a comprehensive program on the move and spotlight elements of our robust curriculum, including inspiring faculty members who have served our community and presented at national conferences after having been recognized as distinguished leaders in their respective fields. We welcome you to learn more about our faculty and our programming which enriches our students’ world view and growing interests in service (Project Leads), global awareness (Level Up Village), engineering (Robotics), the performing arts (OZ, A Journey to See the Wizard), and inquiry and deep thinking (Project Zero). We are equally honored to recognize our students who have worked hard to achieve their goals and strived to become their best selves. To our recent graduates, we wish them all the best as they begin new experiences and embark on new educational journeys. Finally, we are proud of our faculty members, who have served our community with passion and zeal; those who have retired leave behind honorable legacies. Their unwavering dedication of time and talent has ensured a program and experience that is responsive to the diverse interests of our students and has instilled in our students the positive traits and values associated with the RPDS graduate. As we look to the future we enthusiastically imagine the course we will set and the intentional work we will embark on to continue the tradition of educating the hearts and minds of our students, so they may have the preparation and dispositions to shape the future. I would like to thank the entire RPDS community for generously supporting the mission of our school and for helping us continue to provide an exceptional elementary school experience for our students. May God continue to bless our school community as we work together to prepare our children to live, lead, and serve as conscientious citizens.

Excellence As we celebrate the end of a successful 2017-2018 school year, I am especially excited about the future of Riverside Presbyterian Day School (RPDS). For 70 years, RPDS has led Jacksonville as a premier independent school with a tradition of excellence. This year, we honored that tradition with new leadership and a new outlook. We are fortunate to have Ben Ketchum as our new Head of School. He has quickly earned the respect and admiration of the students, his staff, and our community. Ben is focused on the future of our school, its continual improvement, and the success of our students. Under his leadership, RPDS is committed to achieving excellence by progressing diversity, enhancing curriculum, improving campus facilities, and attracting the best teachers and staff. While Ben is the Head of School, the teachers and staff of RPDS are certainly the heart of the school. Their commitment to teaching, developing, and caring for our students is nothing but excellent. However, the greatest testament to excellence is our students. Educating the mind, nurturing the spirit, and fostering the development of the whole child is the RPDS mission, which is fulfilled at every grade level on every school day. I am always amazed, but not surprised, how often I hear accolades from parents and educators of other schools about our great students. Although they certainly mention academic preparedness and community involvement, the best compliment is when they refer to the excellence of their character. This attribute of our students is the clearest embodiment of the RPDS mission and, perhaps, the one that will best serve them throughout their lives. RPDS achieves excellence through the support and involvement of an amazing school community. I would like to sincerely thank the faculty and administration for their commitment to upholding the highest standards of teaching and caring for our children. To all the parents, grandparents, and volunteers, everyone is grateful for the time, talent, and resources you invest in supporting the school. Finally, I would like to thank Riverside Presbyterian Church and the Board of Trustees for their dedication and strategic direction in fulfilling the RPDS mission. Together, we will uphold a culture of excellence at RPDS for generations to come.

As part of Riverside Presbyterian Day School’s commitment to embracing inclusivity and belonging, Jan Reeder and Donette Snyder, both members of the Leadership Diversity Committee, were invited to present and facilitate caucuses at two national conferences this school year. The NAIS People of Color Conference is the flagship of the National Association of Independent Schools commitment to equity and justice in teaching and learning. Nearly 6,000 educators and students came together last fall in Anaheim, California to explore the theme: Voices for Equity and Justice Now and in Every Generation: Lead, Learn, Rededicate, and Deliver. A part of being primary facilitators of their affinity groups, Ms. Reeder and Mrs. Snyder were charged with presenting to over 800 educators on Becoming an Ally. In addition, Ms. Reeder and Mrs. Snyder were lead mediators of caucus groups at the national WPC in Grand Rapids, MI which is designed to bring together a consummate network of both national and regional leaders and practitioners to work and learn from each other. Ms. Reeder and Mrs. Snyder used visible thinking routines to facilitate discussion and self reflection on making an impact in an increasingly global world and they will be giving a presentation on this approach at the Council of Independent School’s convention in November 2018.

Ben Ketchum, Head of School, presented at this year’s National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Annual Conference alongside colleagues from Westminster (Atlanta) and National Presbyterian School (DC). The presentation titled Personalizing the Path to Leadership and Professional Growth was aimed at school leaders and designed to highlight one school’s process for restructuring and revitalizing its professional growth and evaluation framework.

As independent schools seek to retain and attract the best and brightest talent they benefit from simultaneously cultivating and sustaining cultures of professional growth. Ben and his colleagues shared their journey and described how a well structured and intentional evaluation system and a professional growth model can lead to attracting new, exceptional teachers while retaining quality teachers who are driven by their own professional interests to learn, grow, and assume leadership roles.

Will Gay, Director of Communications & Marketing, presented at Finalsite University’s annual conference last June in Baltimore, Maryland. Selected to join elite presenters from a multitude of forward thinking schools, Mr. Gay shared his expertise of enhancing exposure of institutions through live stream videoing. Not only did he engage his listeners with inside tips on boosting school event engagement, he shared the latest technology for an easier jumpstart to live streaming. Mr. Gay’s proficiencies in live streaming have allowed for RPDS to globally share important events to family and friends. This marketing technique has also afforded RPDS to reach a broader and bigger audience through social media.

STEAM Coordinator, Kelly Knight, has developed the RPDS STEAM curriculum to be at the forefront of the makerspace movement. In her classrooms, students are exposed to design, problem solving, and critical thinking through multiple learning platforms including educational tools, robotics, circuitry, 3D imaging and digital design. Students at Riverside benefit from a multi-faceted hands on approach to learning. Kelly has presented multiple webinars, viewed by educators around the world, on topics such as coding in the classroom and how to start a makerspace. She has helped educational technology companies such as littleBits and Sphero test new products and develop lesson plans for the community. Each summer she attends Constructing Modern Knowledge Institute, a four day-long conference, where she is able to collaborate with like-minded educators and learn from leaders in the makerspace field. Under Miss Knight’s implementation of a constructivist design thinking approach to learning, students are able to develop vital problem solving and critical thinking skills that will help them become confident, 6 perseverant students throughout school and successful creative adults. 2017-18 STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE AT RPDS Team RPDS LEGObots and Team RPDS Electrons were ecstatic to represent RPDS for the first time this year in the challenging FIRST LEGO League Tournament! Both teams, consisting of 4th-6th Graders, worked hard preparing for the competition in December. In addition to building and programming robots, the teams were also expected to develop a project based on the theme of Hydrodynamics. All teams were judged on how well they demonstrated the core values of the FIRST LEGO League which emphasizes the importance of teamwork, friendly competition, and problem solving. Team RPDS LEGObots won the Judges’ Choice Award, one of 6 awards given out to the 21 participating teams. This award recognized the team's enthusiasm and effortless teamwork demonstrated throughout the day. RPDS is looking forward to its 2nd season of the LEGO League for the 2018-2019 school year and will also be forming LEGO League Jr. teams for students 6-10 years old.

VISIBLE THINKING RPDS faculty members Molly Rhoden, Jennifer Sherlock, Kelly Knight, Shannon Raterman, Victoria Farina, and Anthony Franklin participated in two distinct Project Zero courses offered through the Harvard School of Education. These courses, Thinking and Learning in A Maker-Centered Classroom and Visible Thinking, are designed to help educators explore best practices related to maker-center teaching and learning, deepen content learning, and to develop students’ thinking skills and dispositions. By engaging with other educators from across the country, our teachers were able to reflect on and enrich their own teaching practices, while inserting new specialized thinking routines into their lessons. The processes of these thinking routines help to reinforce and define student learning and thinking in ways that truly recognize how teachers should think about education and how children should think about themselves as learners. These thinking routines oftentimes shift learning from the teacher-directed approach into one that is more student-driven. We look forward to a new team of teachers participating this fall as we continue to develop and deepen student thinking across the grade levels of RPDS.

8 LEVEL UP VILLAGE

This year the 6th Grade had the unique opportunity to partner with students from Ghana through Level UP Village, an organization that connects students from around the world to learn from one another and to engage collaboratively in various lessons and projects. Our 6th graders and the students from Ghana chose to participate in the Global Doctors project which focused on analyzing the human body systems through seven different animal dissections. Each dissection helped students gain a stronger understanding of the human cardiovascular, digestive, skeletal, and nervous systems. Our students, together with the students from Ghana, worked on collaborative documents and shared videos to discuss questions, lab experiences, and learn about each other. The connection also allowed students to think about global issues facing each region. The students started their relationship sharing video letters exploring what they had in common and if they could visit each other, where they would go. In further videos, students talked about the dissections and continued asking questions about each other. On a collaborative document, students explored diseases affecting the populations in their area and which one to cure. The diversity in answers offered valuable insight into the lives of their global partner, developing empathy in our students. The Level Up Village program used a common curriculum to create a global partnership between RPDS and students in Ghana. It was an amazing opportunity for our students to reach outside our school walls. Students gained new friends from a different part of the world while teaching them that while we are different, we are very much the same.

9 Riverside Presbyterian Day School was proud to present its first school-wide musical production, OZ, A Musical Journey to See the Wizard. This collaborative journey was led and directed by Julie Springer, Lisa Butler, Jennifer Sherlock, Molly Rhoden, and Shannon Jennings. Under their leadership was a talented and imaginative group of 80 Pre-Kindergarten through 6th Grade students, all eager and ready to bring the story of Dorothy and her new-found friends to life on the RPDS stage.

Being the first all-school musical production, the directors were inspired by the outpouring of student interest and moved by the diversity of talent and the poise displayed by each of the students throughout the process. The acting and overall performance reflected the genuine spirit of the students and demonstrated what can be accomplished when both teachers and students work together to share ideas and realize vison.

Participation in this year’s musical was not limited to those who wished to perform on stage. While the actors were busy practicing and perfecting their roles, a group of students readily accepted the responsibility of contributing as members of the Set Design and Art Team. This creative team worked collaboratively planning, constructing, crafting, and painting every prop and backdrop used for the performance. These student-led work sessions highlighted the innovative capacity of the children and were appropriately filled with sounds of hammers, drills, and the joyful buzz of children laughing and chatting.

In May, the actors and set design team converged to seamlessly meld their months of creative efforts into one colorful and animated production. The student body and faculty were amazed as they were the first to see the production during the matinee performance. Once they perfected their lines and stage flips, the students and teachers presented two full performances of OZ, A Musical Journey to see the Wizard to the entire RPDS community over two nights. Those in attendance were delighted and joyfully entertained by our amazing students and teachers.

10 Watch OZ, A Musical Journey to See the Wizard on the RPDS Vimeo page by visiting http://vimeo.com/rpdsjax/oz When asked about the overall performance and learning experience, Julie Springer shared, “The students involved were so proud of their hard work and thrilled with the final product. It was exciting and rewarding to offer an opportunity that reached students at so many grade levels. Creating and presenting an artistic production like Oz allowed our students to be involved in a variety of ways, from acting to singing to designing and engineering. This was an amazing shared experience for the community and the production offered something for everyone.”

At Riverside we believe a vibrant and creative performing arts program is vital to the life and rhythm of an elementary school and that when students are given choices and opportunities to take learning into their own hands, anything is possible. Musical productions such as OZ, A Musical Journey to see the Wizard, embodies the philosophy of learning at RPDS and affords children of all ages and skill levels the opportunity to realize their full potential and share their creative gifts.

2017-18 6th Grade Project LEADS This year’s Project Leads theme was “Lean on Me.” The students discussed the parable of the paralyzed man and how he had to lean on his friends. His friends, being good men of great faith, believed in Jesus and because of that they did everything they could to get the paralyzed man in front of Jesus. We learned that sometimes in life we need to lean on each other to accomplish great things. During Project Leads our students served at City Rescue Mission, Family Promise, The Well Church of Jacksonville, Sanctuary on 8th Street, Presbyterian Social Ministries, Catholic Charities, the Sulzbacher Center, MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation and Impact Learning Center. They also served around the RPDS campus as 1st Grade and ELC aides, Chapel guides, patrols, library assistants, and ambassadors for special events such as Grandparents’ Day and Field Day. All in all, our students logged in 4,095 hours of service collectively. Our hope is that participating in school and community-based service projects will lay the foundation for life-long servant leadership. We honored our 6th Graders at the annual Service Appreciation Luncheon on May 24 and were privileged to be joined by Mal Washington himself, who personally thanked our students for their service to the community. 13 Educational EXCELLENCE Honoring 2018 Student Achievement Anna Conners William Gabriel and William Wright Reagan Lane & William Rosenberg Highest Academic Honors High Academic Honors Academic Honors

Grandparents’ Day October 25, 2018

Capers March 9, 2019 President Vice-President Daily’s Fit-4-Life Ann Harrell Ashley Jimerson Kids Duathlon & Tot Trot April 13, 2019 How long have you been a parent at RPDS? Ann: This is our 6th year at RPDS. Our daughter, Caroline, started in Kindergarten. www.rpds.com/rpa Ashley: This is our 4th. Lila will be in 2nd Grade and Ford is going into Kindergarten. What volunteer roles have you participated in at Riverside? Ann: I’ve been a homeroom parent, co-chaired the Artsonia committee, volunteered for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week, Capers, the Duathlon and lots of class parties and events. I have been on the Parents Association leadership team for the past two years. Ashley: I’ve been a homeroom parent, co-chaired the New Parent Welcome Committee and co-chaired the Daily’s Fit-4-Life Kids Duathlon. What would you tell a parent looking to get involved about volunteerism at RPDS? Ann: It’s a great way to connect with fellow parents and be a part of the RPDS community! There is something for everyone, whether you have one hour (vision screening, class pictures), one day (Octoberfest, Capers, the Duathalon), one week (Faculty and Staff Appreciation week), or you are looking for an ongoing opportunity (Artsonia, library aides, homeroom parents). You can even volunteer on an as-needed basis through the Busy Bee committee. Ashley: The parent-student relationship parallels one of the primary principles of life: you get out of it what you put into it. Parental contribution is one of the most influential factors in the formula of success for our school. Volunteer opportunities are available in so many forms that making a contribution doesn’t have to involve time or money to make an impact. We can help you find the right opportunity for you and your family! Why is serving the Riverside community important to you? Ann: The faculty and staff give so much to the students and to the school community. It’s important to me to give back. Ashley: It’s where we live, work, play and raise our children. As stakeholders in this community, RPDS provides the perfect mechanism for which we can channel our efforts to make a direct, positive impact on the people around us. What do you find most special about RPDS? Ann: There is a genuine feeling of happiness and enthusiasm on campus that is so unique and so special. It really sets RPDS apart. Ashley: RPDS is a rare mix of academic rigor and whole-child development that results in the most ideal, well-rounded approach to education. While it may sound trite, the thing that I love the most is that its teachers and administrators genuinely love my children 18 and are personally invested in their future. 2017-18 Advancement

Thanks to the generosity of the Riverside community during the 2017-18 school year, a total of $333,628 was raised to support dynamic resources and academic curricula that guide every aspect of the educational journey – fostering compassionate, confident, and curious individuals. These dollars, vital to our mission to educate the mind, nurture the spirit, and foster the development of the whole child, were raised through the following: • Promise Fund • RPDS Endowment & Named Funds • Capers • RPDS Business Partners Program • Daily’s Fit-4-Life Kids Duathlon & Tot Trot

The Promise Fund, Riverside’s annual giving program, runs from September 1st through May 31st every year, and is one of the most important sources of revenue for our school, other than tuition. Like all of Riverside’s fundraising and giving opportunities, The Promise Fund continues to strengthen each year through the incredible support we receive from you, our wonderful parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni, alumni families and friends of RPDS – thank you for another outstanding year!

19 Parents and friends gathered together to celebrate the 31st Annual Capers Gala: Down by the Riverside on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at WJCT Studios.

Led by event chair, Stephanie Verlander and co-chairs Marcela Beard, Kellye Catlin, and Katie Joseph the event raised a net revenue of almost $65,000 to support Riverside’s mission and its students.

A heartfelt thanks to the Capers chairs and committee for lending their time and talents to creating an unforgettable evening.

The 3rd Annual Daily’s Fit-4-Life Kids Duathlon (ages 5-15) held on Saturday, April 14, 2018, was a wonderful success with over 250 children from the greater Jacksonville community participating. New to the event this year was the addition of the Tot Trot, two laps around the RPDS track, for children six and under.

Both races concluded on the RPDS campus, where participants and their families enjoyed a celebratory festival with music, face painters, a bouncy slide, and child-friendly vendor booths.

Our heartfelt thanks to Event Co-Chairs Heather Creel and Ashley Jimerson, and everyone who helped make the event a success. Thanks to the generous support of the RPDS Business Partners Program and their commitment to children’s health and wellness, over $29,000 was raised for RPDS. Through the Daily’s Fit-4-Life Kids Duathlon, we hope more children and families in Jacksonville and the surrounding area will be exposed to the lifelong benefits of being Fit-4-Life. 42% Participation Increase 20:12 36:30 Junior Division Senior Division Fastest Finish Time Fastest Finish Time

27 Riverside’s ENDOWMENT FUNDS The Riverside Presbyterian Day school endowment is an aggregation of assets invested by school to support the school’s educational mission in perpetuity. Annually, the RPDS Endowment Fund supports school operations in two prominent ways: 1) providing need-based financial assistance and 2) supporting faculty and curricular development. All gifts to the Riverside Presbyterian Day School (RPDS) endowment fund are restricted and invested to preserve the corpus of each donation, as well as to ensure that each donor's specific restrictions are honored.
