Dear Friends,

In the world of fundraising, we use the term “philanthropy” to describe the act of giving. The term comes from the Latin words meaning “love of mankind.”

Although many people think of a philanthropist as someone possessing great wealth, I like to think of philanthropy more as a state of mind. The philanthropists we come into contact with each day at the Nemours Fund for Children’s Health have common characteristics. They look around them and see needs that must be met. They see themselves as part of a community that is striving to meet important goals. By giving, they become agents of change.

A philanthropist may be a fourth grader inspired to raise money for Nemours because her friend has leukemia, or a college graduate just beginning his first job who makes an online contribution to get in the habit of giving each year.

There are philanthropists who make a substantial gift through their wills to benefit future generations or endow a chair in a medical field that interests them. Other philanthropists help Nemours grow by investing in our capital campaign.

Whatever form your personal philanthropy takes, I know that it emanates from a desire to make things better—especially for the vulnerable children in our care.

As an owner of Concordville Nissan and Subaru in Pennsylvania, he has repeatedly used his connections and business opportunities in many creative ways to benefit the Hospital.

In addition, Peter and his wife Alison are members of The Nemours Society. Parents of two young daughters, they value having world-class care available right in their community for themselves and for the employees of the dealership.

Beginning eight years ago, Peter and his brother and dealership co- owner Stuart Lustgarten began contributing a portion of their personal profits from holiday weekend car sales, donating $100 - $200 for each car sold during that time to the hospital. Their dealership made a significant commitment to the Family Resource Center and a $100,000 pledge to the expansion. To date, more than $110,000 has been donated to duPont Hospital.

Peter also provides a no cost lease of two vehicles–one for our trauma/ injury prevention program and another for community outreach. He has helped us build a relationship with Subaru of America including the national Subaru “Share the Love” event. This year, Subaru dealerships Peter and Alison Lustgarten at the Nemours Society reception. around the country had the opportunity to add a local charity to their national campaign and Peter has chosen Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. The opening of Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando inspired Dan Deighan to help children in a number of unique ways. A former track and cross-country coach, he has shown that a coaching and mentoring approach is also successful with his clients at Deighan Financial Advisors, Inc. Dan is known to everyone as “Coach Deigs.”

Coach Deigs joined the hospital’s Family Advisory Council and learned that siblings often feel left out when their brother or sister is sick and their moms and dads are coping with the demands of an illness.

He made a generous contribution to outfit a playroom for siblings. It includes a foosball table, big-screen television, games, comfortable furniture, golf putter and sound system. The Coach Deigs Teen Space Room has proved to be a great attraction for the 12 and over age group.

Coach Deigs, a member of The Nemours Society, also supports the hospital’s Beads of Courage program, which presents special beads to children for each treatment or test they undergo during their care for cancer or other serious illnesses. Each child receives a Coach Deigs Bead along with their “starter bead.”
