5 Meet the Team

Jo Cooper Founding Director / Tour Leader Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Jo has spent his adult life working as a tour guide in various parts of southern and East Africa. “The day I started my field guide studies, I lost my heart to Africa. The intricacy and simplicity of life in the wild is something that just latched on and wouldn’t let go! I had to stay. It wasn’t until I started guiding overland tours a few years later that I got to know some of the people and places of rural Africa. Spending time living in these small villages and getting to know the humble people of these communities opened my heart all over again. Once I started making these heartfelt connections, my mind began churning with thoughts of what Footsteps Through Africa could be.”

Gordy Akampurira Volunteer Manager - Uganda Gordy is a local from the village of Rubuguri. When he finished school, he went on to get involved in tour guiding in the area of Bwindi Impenetrable and his home, Rubuguri. Gordy is also head coach and trainer of the school’s athletics club and he has a great passion for helping the students in Rubuguri. When Jo first started Footsteps Through Africa in the village, Gordy immediately jumped on board to help wherever he could, proving his invaluable contribution as a manager in the organisation. In addition to helping with all of our locally based projects, he is also the head of the Footsteps Through Africa volunteers who stay in Rubuguri, and always ensures these visitors feel at home.

Chloë is a writer by trade and became Jo’s port of call when it came to sharing the exciting developments on social media. Upon visiting Uganda in 2017, Chloë saw for herself what all the fuss was about and sure enough fell deeply in love with the country and its people. Now, she looks forward to every opportunity to join the Footsteps team all over Africa!

With roughly 70% of the country dedicated to national parks or protected conservation areas, it is no secret why this might be the case. During this tour, we will cover all of what makes Botswana such a desirable destination; from the immense emptiness of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, to the sheer natural beauty of the Okavango Delta, and untamed nature of exclusive camps in the famous Chobe, Savuti, and Moremi Game Reserve, where we will enjoy endless game drives. And if that was not enough, we will end the tour relaxing at ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, (the smoke that thunders), a.k.a. The mighty Victoria Falls.

21 NAMIBIA Desert & Wildlife Boasting the world’s most ancient desert, Namibia is considered unmatched in its raw, natural beauty. Its appeal lies in the rolling, red sand dunes of the Namib, extending inland from the cold Atlantic Ocean, to the uninhabitable rubble of Ais-Ais, whose spiny mountains create the outline of the world’s second largest canyon, the Fish River. This land is also home to the endless, golden grass plains of the Kalahari and the jewel-toned wetland of the Caprivi Strip in the north, which leads us to wonder if there is indeed an iconic African landscape that Namibia does not possess. As if this isn’t enough, the rare desert elephants amble along Namibia’s dry riverbeds, and the critically endangered black rhinos dwell in the country’s northern Damaraland. Namibia is one of the continent’s most exciting destinations, and it is one not to be missed.

• Education: High school level • Criminal background clearance: For insurance purposes, it is necessary for all volunteers to declare a clear criminal background check. • Languages: English at an intermediate level. • Time constraint: When volunteering in education, you are required to stay for a minimum of 1 month • Other Skills: It is always helpful to have skills in various fields. Agriculture, teaching, general health, business, first aid are all fields of expertise that could be put to good use with our projects. • Travel Insurance: All Footsteps volunteers are required to have extensive travel insurance. • Application Form: All prospective volunteers are required to fill out an application to motivate their reasons for volunteering and assure us of their intentions during their stay,

Flying to Kigali (recommended): Kigali airport in Rwanda is the closest international airport to Rubuguri, just a short 2 hour drive away. You will be met at the airport by our Footsteps manager, Gordy, who escort you from Kigali, across the border to Uganda and assist you with all of the border crossing procedures.

Once in Uganda, you will have a quick stop in Kisoro town to grab a few essentials (such as a sim card) before taking the beautiful mountain road to Rubuguri village. When you arrive, you will be welcomed to your new home at Karungi lodge and made to feel right at home. You will have a chance to rest and when you are ready, you will be shown around the projects and have an extensive briefing about your time with us. (You are welcome to fly into Entebbe Airport, however, it involves a long 10 hour bus ride across the country to reach Rubuguri Village.)
