MASON 2005 All rights reserved SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY MOB: VIOLENCE AGAINST RELIGIOUS OUTSIDERS IN THE U.S. SOUTH, 1865-1910 Abstract by Patrick Q. Mason Studies of violence in the late nineteenth-century South focus almost exclusively on racial and political violence against African Americans. While this emphasis is both understandable and appropriate, what has been largely neglected is the violence committed against religious outsiders, and more generally their overall treatment in what was essentially a hegemonic culture of evangelical Protestantism. In addition to the many instances of violence against African American churches and ministers, the South also witnessed dozens of episodes of anti-Jewish violence and literally hundreds of cases of anti-Mormon violence from 1865 to 1910. Acknowledging and understanding this relatively hidden chapter in American history provides us with unique insights into postbellum southern culture and the sometimes violent side of the American experiment in religious pluralism. This dissertation adds to the growing body of scholarship exploring the relationships between religion and violence in southern history and American history more broadly by making three primary contributions. First, it uncovers numerous untold narratives of violence against southern religious outsiders.

Whittaker 28 Mormon Administrative and Organizational History: A Source Essay ne of the great strengths of The Church of Jesus Christ of O Latter-day Saints is its institutional vitality. Expanding from six members in 1830 to fourteen million in 2010, its capacity to govern and manage an ever-enlarging membership with a bureaucracy flexible enough to provide for communication and growth but tight enough to ensure control and stability is an important but little-known story. The essential functions of the Church were doctrinally mandated from its earliest years, and the commands to keep records have assured that accounts of its activities have been maintained. Such historical records created the essential informational basis necessary to run the institu- tion. These records range from membership to financial to the institu- tional records of the various units of the Church, from the First Presi- dency to branches in the mission field. David J. Whittaker is the curator of Western and Mormon Manuscripts, L. Tom Perry Special Collections, Harold B. Lee Library, and associate professor of history at Brigham Young University. A Firm Foundation The study of Latter-day Saint ecclesiology has been a challenge until recently. As yet, the best studies remain in scholarly monographs, often unknown or unavailable. It is the purpose of this essay to highlight this emerging literature by complementing the essays assembled in this volume. Most maps are not indexed; map coordinates for specific locations are given in the Geographical Directory. Spelling, punctuation, and capitalization of quotations have been standardized.     Anne Morgan Herbert April 7, 1937 ~ Jan. 29, 2020 Anne Morgan Herbert passed away peacefully in her daughter Martha\s home in Rio Rancho, New Mexico on January 29, 2020. Her husband Bartholomeus Herbert, of almost 62 years, was at her side as she passed as he had been for many hours every day as her condition worsened. Anne was born on April 7, 1937, to Harold Morgan and Jessie Christensen Morgan in Salt Lake City, Utah and has always been proud of her pioneer heritage. Her grandfather, John Hamilton Morgan was a pioneer General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His wife, Mary Ann Linton was born in Utah in 1865 of parents from Ireland and England. Anne\s maternal grandfather Marinus Christensen left Denmark for Utah with his family and crossed the plains when he was 2 years old. He married Frances Ann Thomson who was born in Utah in 1864 of parents from England and Wales. Anne\s mother's family was called by Brigham Young to move to St. John\s Arizona where her mother and older siblings were born. Anne had many fond memories of visiting St. John\s on a regular basis when growing up. Anne graduated from Salt Lake City\s West High School in 1955 and then attended the University of Utah where she met her future husband, Bert, at a ballroom dance class. She also attended school at Arizona State University and Palo Alto Community College majoring in music (piano). She taught piano for much of her adult life and also used her musical talents to accompany many plays, recitals and to serve in the church.
