Lochcarron Coastal Rowing Association A lot to report despite the weather. Work is progressing well on the second skiff and with up to ten boat builders turning out regularly regardless of the cold, Donnie and Evelyn’s barn on Croft Road is a hive of activity! A lot of background work has been undertaken including erecting the build frame, preparing the moulds and scarfing the planks that make up the hull. Scarfing is the process of joining the 8’ planks that are supplied with the kit into 22’ planks required for each side of the hull. This is very time consuming work but it’s also essential that it’s done accurately as small mistakes made early in the build can have a significant impact later on. New skills have been learnt and the first plank is now on the hull which is an important milestone as it means the framework starts to look like a boat. The remaining planks are scarfed and ready to be attached the only problem being low temperatures which extend the time required for the epoxy glue to cure. With a good team of builders now in place we hope to start building oars at the same time as building the hull; more on that next time. The Winter League event we hoped to hold in December was postponed due to heavy snow making road conditions difficult for towing. As it happened the weather on the day was not too bad and we held a mini regatta of our own with well over a dozen local rowers braving the conditions fuelled by an excellent range of cakes and flapjack. A great time was had by all. The Winter League Event will take place when the weather improves… Looking forward to the summer we have entered a number of regattas across and will be competing in events on the Clyde, Loch Melfort, Cromarty, Ullapool and other areas in addition to a local derby with Shieldaig and our own regatta in September. There’s a lot going on and with two boats on the water we won’t need to travel to get some competition. It’s also not all about racing and we plan a number of days out in the skiff at a more leisurely pace. So, if you’re tempted to try rowing, please get in touch: Contact Steven on [email protected] (01520 722870) or Nick on [email protected] (01520 722220)

6 POPPIES

Poppies all have many uses, drugs are made from opium's juices. Himalayan ones are a heavenly blue, lovely to look at in anyone's view. But man turns beauty into the beast, Heroin becomes the young addicts feast. The poppies of Flanders glowing bright and red, Illumine the fields where millions have bled. Armistice Day comes around every year, and mother's hearts are filled with fear. They hope their young sons won't be sent out again, to spill their blood for ambitious old men.

SUNSET OVER ATTADALE

Attadale is a colourful place across the Loch from here. Sometimes it's bathed in strawberry pink, laced with an apricot hue. From dawn to dusk reflections change and paint a magical view. At times the water is mirrored like glass, its colour a deep navy blue. But dark or bright this wonderful sight, is something you will agree, To cheer your heart and keep you alive, then you will feel as grateful as me.

13 Lochcarron Leisure Centre Update

It has been some time since we last wrote a progress update for the An Carrannach. We had a flurry of activity, first distributing and then gathering in, our community questionnaire in January and February last year. The results confirmed overwhelming community support for our proposals and for the chosen site for the proposed Leisure Centre.

What have we been doing in the last twelve months?

We have been liaising with individuals and public agencies to gather support for our concept. We have paid visits to existing Leisure Centres - most notably in Lochinver and Ness on the Isle of Lewis. We have been updating our business plan. We have been running fundraising events to boost our working funds. We recruited a new secretary - Liz Howard and a new Treasurer - Pam Bright.

Based on our investigations so far what do we plan to include in the centre?

Here is our wish list at present: A multipurpose sports hall - minimum size 18m x 27m A Fitness Centre Two multi-purpose rooms... e.g. treatment/play rooms. Changing/Shower Rooms. A Climbing/bouldering wall A two rink Ten-pin bowling alley A refreshment/soft play area. Large Storage area/s A reception area and Large car park with charging bay/s and waste disposal area for camper vans.

What are the next steps?

We will continue to liaise with Highland Council and other bodies to promote the development. It will be up to us as a community to raise the funds and put in place a management structure to run the facility. To this end we are already established as a community company with charitable status. Over the coming months we plan to recruit an experienced project officer to pull together a final design and engage major funders to take the project to the point of constructions.

What can you do to help?

Firstly please support our fund raising activities locally. The first of these is due to be the joint WORKING TOGETHER RACE NIGHT to be held on 3rd March. Watch out for more details. The Leisure Centre team will be helping on the night…. it looks like being just what's needed after the winter blues! Also please attend our AGM on the 8th May and pay £1.00 to join as an "ordinary member". This shows ongoing support to potential funders. We are often asked "Will it really happen? The answer is YES IT WILL - we must show we have the will, determination and community support to take this to fulfilment.

Bernie & I and Skunk the dog planned to have a wee bar, do a bit of food, have a couple of guests and walk on the beach every day! Didn’t quite work out that way ……where’s the beach? I’ve enjoyed the journey and having some of my family around for most of it. It’s a great way of life. I have met some great people and had some amazing times!! I am looking to put my feet up a bit more, but with such an amazing team behind me it’s not a problem.

TUESDAY 13TH ‘SHROVE TUESDAY’ the Chefs will be flipping the pans with a few choices of pancakes and I am sure Aron will have a few flavours of Ice Cream up his sleeve to compliment these.

WEDNESDAY 14th VALENTINES DAY beat the weekend rush and bring out your loved one to dine romantically at the Inn, Robert has some great specials planned to whoooo you all, free glass of prosecco to all on this night. Aron is planning some aphrodisiac flavours to entice you all to come out! If you are planning the weekend either side, we will have a romantic menu on offer too.

SATURDAY 17th LIVE SCOTTISH MUSIC - Ewen and Ali will be playing live traditional Scottish music on the accordion and guitar in the bar, should be a great night of entertainment!

Personally, I would also like to pay tribute to everyone who has shown us such compassion and understanding through these past months. It is very much appreciated. Special mention goes to all my staff, and those closely involved in the Inn, who have all continued to keep the‘ show on the road’ and support each other during these tragic times. I am very proud of you all. Thank you.

18 Jessie MacKay (deceased) Thank you for the support given to us over the past few months and especially when Jessie passed away in November. Many acts of kindness – prayers, visits, cards/letters, flowers and gifts of delicious food – have been much appreciated. Family, friends and colleagues have been an amazing strength and encouragement to us.

Being able to have Jessie home at Coulags for her final days was a joy for us. We are thankful to Dr Strath and the local nursing team for facilitating this and being so attentive towards her.

The collection at the funeral came to £1,500. This has been given to the Ferguson Medical Centre (£1,000) and the Macular Society (£500). Thank you for giving so generously.

We were comforted by Rev Marcos Florit’s funeral service and thank him for his prayerful support towards us as a family as Jessie deteriorated in frailty.

We miss her very much but we have been blessed with the presence of God and the loving arms of many people.

George and Ann MacKay, Coulags

Care Inspectorate's Unannounced Visit awards Maximum Marks for Care, Support, Leadership and Management

Some staff and clients at the Howard Doris Centre An unannounced inspection took place by the Care Inspectorate at the end of November, with the inspector spending two days at the Centre, leaving no stone unturned in her assessments. Top marks were awarded for all four criteria that were explored: Care, Support, Leadership and Management.

Manager, Kerry Watson said that she was delighted for the staff. 'It is brilliant to get perfect scores in these categories,' she added. 'I have always known the Centre was excellent for the care provided. I had hoped that the grades would be maximum, and I am very glad that they are. It is great recognition for the staff and all the hard work that they do.' The revamped respite facility - the Lochside Suite - was also on display.

20 Heavy snow descended on Lochcarron in mid December, and we were appreciative of the skills of drivers/handymen Dave Black and Nick Young who were kept very busy clearing the snow and ice to keep everyone safe. Again, this winter, we are pleased to have snowboards above the entrance, which have prevented large quantities of snow from sliding from the sloping roof onto anyone underneath. The ongoing group, Health and Wellbeing for people living with Cancer comprises a series of monthly afternoon get-togethers Clients of the Centre are making pressed taking place on the last Monday of the month flower bookmarks and cards, one of a variety at 2.00 pm. The popular Fit as a Fiddle group, led by our staff nurse, Cathy Geddes, is a monthly opportunity to bring health issues into sharp focus in an informal way. The February meeting will include a checking-in on those healthy New Year resolutions that may or may not have been successful. Encouragement and support is offered to those whose best laid plans have faltered. Routine blood pressure and weight checks will also be on the agenda.

Birthdays provide an excellent reason for special cakes, and here, Duncan MacDonald is celebrating his recent birthday with a cake made by staff members Cis Ross and Elaine Porritt.

22 News from Applecross and Lochcarron Primary Schools Naidheachdan bho Bun-sgoiltean A’Chomraich agus Loch Carrainn It’s A Perfect 10 For Lochcarron Primary School Pupils Lochcarron Village Hall provided the splendid backdrop for our amazing Christmas Panto during the last week before the holidays. All the pupils from both the English and Gaelic medium classes came together to perform a highly contemporary and imaginative nativity play with a Strictly Come Dancing twist. Earlier in the day the children had warmed up for the main performance with an extra special show for some of the residents of Howard Doris Centre and other members of the local community. All the tremendous hard work and rehearsals under the dedicated watchful eye of teacher Mrs. Maclennan paid off with a highly entertaining and professional performance across the day. Indeed, the success of a really busy yet highly enjoyable day was reflected in the fundraising efforts which enabled the school to raise a massive £770 towards their forthcoming outdoor education trip in 2018. Many thanks, once again, to all those who attended and gave so generously on what was a cold and wintry night.

23 Applecross – The School Where Heroes Are Made Before Christmas the children of Applecross Primary School and Nursery performed the play “The School for Heroes” that they helped to write. It was a retelling of a Skye legend; Cuchulainn, the great Irish hero, comes to Dun Sgathaich to be trained in the ways of a warrior. The children had great fun coming up with imaginative challenges that a warrior might face, including a spelling competition and a dance off! The play was a great success and reflected the hard work all the children put in practicing their lines and making props. The afternoon was finished off by a demonstration of several country dances the children had been learning in PE with parents joining in with some coaxing! The school baked shortbread and sold decorations, raising £165 for the RNLI. 25 Thank You Laura Mackay & Anne MacCuish would like to say a massive thank you to all who contributed to the very kind gifts we received on our "retirement" from youth shinty. We were overwhelmed at the generosity shown to us. A big thank you to the Lochcarron Parent Council for organising the gifts and many many thanks to the parents & children from Lochcarron, Shieldaig and Applecross for the lovely flowers, cards and gifts received from you all. Thank you also to George Hendry and Lochcarron Camanachd Committee for the lovely Quaichs presented to us at the recent AGM. Very kind and much appreciated. We would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who helped us in so many ways over the 16 years we were involved, especially to the parents who transported children time and time again to training and competitions - we couldn't have done it without you. Thanks also to Donald and Peter at DMK Motors for their support and providing buses over the years. Also to the many people who supported us financially over the years. You all made our job much easier. We had lots of great times, many laughs, a few tears, plenty success and made many friendships over the years and we will definitely miss being involved. We both felt the time was right for a change and are delighted that Ian and Andrew have taken the job on. We wish them all the best for the next 16 years!! Our final and our biggest thanks of all are to the children (many now young adults) - you were all amazing! We are very proud of you all. We never had a problem taking you along to represent us in competitions anywhere - you were a credit to Lochcarron Shinty Club. We will treasure all the memories and friendships made over the years. Thank you all so much Laura Mackay & Anne MacCuish

27 Gallery Newsletter February 2018

Hello and Winter Greetings! We have been so fortunate to begin the year with a quiet note, on the weather front. It somehow makes all our aspirations seem a lot more achievable unless of course we are in training for an Arctic adventure! And ohthis winter light. But as I write, there is rougher stuff looming. Still winter and for some a chance to engage in artistic endeavour without feeling pulled in other directions. 2017 ended on a good note too, with a steady flow of visitor's right up until 30th December. Given the Centre is open only 12 hours a week through the winter season we still benefit from the Tourist season gradually stretching. That old question ‘What do you do in the winter? ’ is increasingly redundant! The rich pool of makers & artists in this area just seems to expand and we are hoping to add some new names to our walls this year. If you are not able to call by the Centre, please send your friends and visitors. Look out for some well kent and new faces in our interview features. We are also planning to Summer share in a little more detail some of the Easter - October techniques and skills undertaken by Monday to Saturday some of our artists. We hope you have 10am – 4pm enjoyed the in-depth interviews of recent Closed Sunday years. Previous Newsletters can all be Winter Opening Hours found on the Centre’s website on the November – Easter Exhibitions Page. Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11am – 3pm.
