FROM THE PRINCIPAL Beryl Harvey

Kia ora koutou

It has been another busy week at MMI and things have been a bit more settled than they were last week. I want to congratulate all of our students who continue to demonstrate our Coastal Values: Respect - Whakaute; Pride - Whakahii; Learner - Akonga.

It is becoming evident that some of our students are starting to experiment with vaping. Under our Kia Maia Code of Conduct, vapes are considered to be an illegal item. Parents will be contacted and consequences put in place if we are aware of the use or possession of a vape at school, or on designated school transport.

Class Placements Next week we begin the process of placing incoming Year 6 students into their rooms for 2021.

At this time, the majority of our staff are returning for 2021 and unless there are special circumstances, our Year 7’s will remain with their current teachers. There may be some class shifts, but this will be discussed, as required. If you have any queries, not already raised, about 2021 placements, please contact us by next Tuesday.

We will maintain 26 teaching classrooms next year. Whilst the classes will remain largely the same, it may be that students are not in the same “team” as they are this year.

You will be informed of your child’s 2021 room number and teacher at the same time as reports are issued at the end of the year.

Council Speed Review You may well be aware of the City Wide Speed Review. There are proposed speed zone changes around some Tauranga and school areas, but no proposed changes around schools in the area. Please take the opportunity to have your say. Between now and 4pm Friday Nov 27, you can share your thoughts via the TCC link.

Athletics sports will happen next week. Whanau are more than welcome to come in to watch, enjoy and support.

Excitement is building around the upcoming sand art experiences. We look forward to seeing some amazing creations.

Congratulations to our Kapa Haka Roopu, who performed with such passion and pride at the regional competition, last weekend. A huge thank you to the tutors, staff and parents who supported our tamariki to produce such an outstanding performance.

All the best to our team ‘Bel Air Boys’ who are competing in the Regional Jump Jam Competition tomorrow.

There are some great results coming from our four water polo teams, who are competing in the North Island Championships, at the moment. All the best for the rest of the weekend.

Our PSG are running their last fundraiser for the year tonight. Thank you to all our PSG volunteers, good luck and thank you to those who are attending. I am sure we will all have a fabulous time.

Have a fantastic weekend.

FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING TEAM – WELL DONE!

Congratulations to the 3 Future Problem Solving teams, who competed in the Virtual National Finals, last weekend. They spent almost 10 hours at school last Saturday doing the exam and creating their performances. The topic was living in poverty and the future scene was specifically about refugees in Australia.

Future problem solving is a 6-step process where teams of 4 are given a scenario from the future. They have to solve a problem they find in the scenario and write their solution as an action plan. They have 2 hours to do the whole process. The next step is to create a performance to explain their action plan creatively. Usually this involves dance, drama, singing etc.

The year 8 team, consisting of Amaya, Tilly, Sav and Skye, came 1st place in the performance of action plan and 3rd place overall (one place away from USA/international competition for next year but first on the waiting list).

The year 8 team, consisting of Ruby, Matilda, Jess and Tydee, came 2nd place in the performance of action plan with a brilliant dramatic presentation.

The year 7 team, consisting of Bella, Maddie, Nellie and Olivia V, performed well in their first competition but unfortunately did not place this year. They’re looking forward to trying again next year.

TAURANGA CITY COUNCIL – SPEED LIMITS

Tauranga Council has started a city-wide review of speed limits in key areas: https://www.tauranga.govt.nz/our-future/projects/transportation-projects/proposed-speed-limit- changes

Many of the Tauranga and Papamoa schools are proposed to see limits decrease. This is something we would love to see on the table for the Mount Maunganui area, yet to our surprise there are none of our school zones being proposed.

If you would like to have your say, complete the TCC survey below, and request our schools are included: https://tauranga.syd1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0Ck1qFifXVVkScB

Moon Civil and Drainage along with Mount Maunganui Intermediate School are proud to be involved in More FM's Stuff The Bus for 2020!

The bus’s final stop will be Christmas in the Park (Saturday 5th December), giving people the last chance to stuff the bus!

All items will be donated to the local charities that the Christmas in the Park Charitable Trust is supporting this year. Tune into 93.4 More FM from the 15th November to keep up to date!

How can you help out: The bus will be on-site, at Mount Intermediate, from Friday 4th December from 8am-11am where members of the public are encouraged to pop down and donate Christmas presents or non-perishable food.
