a What James Millikin envi- sioned when he founded the University in 1901 was unique: the university would embrace the "practical" side of learning along with the "literary and classical;" and, while affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, university it would not be narrowly "sec- tarian" and would remain open to all. The result is one of the nation's first small, compre- hensive universities that, a Students learn to see connections century later, has four colleges “ with other academic disciplines to and schools: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Fine demonstrate the diversity of Arts, School of Nursing and human experience... developing a Tabor School of Business. respect for differences and for With an enrollment of the dignity of all. nearly 2,400 students, Millikin is a devoted partner to the ” Decatur-area community. 2004 big blue baseball - 2 big blue coaching staff

E-mail: [email protected] Office phone: 217.424.3608 Josh Manning enters his third season at the helm of the Big Blue baseball program for the 2004 season after his team finished 25-15 a year ago and sixth in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Manning, who is also the general manager of the Central Illinois College League (CICL) Decatur Blues team, was hired as Millikin's head baseball coach in November 2001. A 1998 graduate of MacMurray College with a degree in history/secondary education, Manning is currently working on his master's degree in communications at the University of Illinois-Springfield. While at MacMurray, the Highlanders finished 24th in the nation during Manning's senior season in 1997. The team was undefeated in both conference tournament and league games. In that season, Manning also earned All-Central Region second team honors. Before joining the MacMurray baseball team, Manning played for two years at Kaskaskia Community College in Centralia. During his sophomore season at Kaskaskia, Manning was selected to pitch in the region all-star game. Manning served as an assistant coach at MacMurray from August 1998 to May 2001 and was a student assistant during the 1997-98 academic year. He has also been a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association since 1999.

Assistant Coach Jim Sammons Jim Sammons, a 2002 graduate of Millikin University, begins his 5th year of assistance to the Millikin baseball team. While at Millikin, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and Sport. Coach Sammon's tenure began in 2000 as a student-assistant under former head coach, Jeff Holm. Following, 2 additional years as a student-assistant, Coach Sammons was promot- ed last season to Coach Manning's first assistant. As the 2003/2004 season takes form, Sammons has additionally assumed responsibilities as the recruiting coordinator. Outside of Millikin, Coach Sammons, a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association, remains heavily involved in baseball. In 2001, he served as an assistant at Mount Zion Jr. High and saw his team advance to the State Tournament. In the summer of 2003, Sammons sat alongside Head Coach, Josh Manning, as an assistant for the Decatur Blues. The Decatur Blues, of the prestigious Central Illinois Collegiate League (CICL), serves as a stepping stone for rising collegiate stars. Of the 2003 Decatur Blues, 4 were drafted by Major League Organizations.

Student Assistant Coach Tony Lozano Antonio Lozano joins the Millikin coaching staff this season after serving the last four seasons as a player. In those four seasons he received three varsity letters. In 2003 Antonio started all 40 games behind the plate. Additionally, in 2003, Tony was the very first recipient of the Merle Chapman Award. In the 2004 season, Lozano's duties will mostly include assistance in run- ning practice and working directly with the three young talented that have joined the Big Blue for 2004. baseball magazine credits The 2004 Baseball Magazine was prepared by the Sports Information Office. 2004 big blue baseball - 3 looking at 2004 The Baseball team had a great deal of success on and off the baseball field in 2003. The Big Blue had nine four year players on the roster in 2003, and eight graduated, with Tony Lozano (Merle Chapman Award Winner) the lone individual still in school. Tony will complete his degree this spring and serves as student-assistant coach with the baseball team. The school record for wins of 21 was eclipsed by the 25 wins of the 2003 club. Many other records fell in the process, including; hits, runs, doubles, triples, homeruns, batting average for a season, and runs batted in. In 2004 the Big Blue return 17 letter winners from the record-breaking team of 2003. In 2004 the Big Blue will look for guidance and leadership from a pitching staff that should be the backbone of the club. Red Shirt Junior Toby Johnson who missed the 2003 season will be counted on to be the Big Blue's ace. In 2002 Johnson was 4-1 with 57 strikeouts in 51 innings of work. Senior Nick Rosenbaum (2003 MU Pitcher of the Year) will be expected to eat up innings, as was the case in 2003. Rosenbaum led the Big Blue with 5 victories in 2003 and also led in appearances with 11. Four seniors that are looking to help the Big Blue in 2004 are, Brad Binder, Michael Lee, David Rambo and Zach Handley. Also look for Brian Black, Neil Sloan and junior college transfers Stephen Nash and Mark Schuit to step in immediately and help the Big Blue hurlers. The 2004 season is one that will begin with many questions to be answered. Only two regular starters are back for the Big Blue in 2004. Todd Barber the everyday designated hitter for the Big Blue in 2003, returns in 2004 to lend some pop to the order. Barber, a proven run producer, .387 with 6 homeruns and 43 RBI's in 2003. The other returnee is Eric Stechmesser who also had a very good year at the plate in 2003. Stechmesser hit .350 with 3 homeruns and 40 RBI's and could be used at anywhere on the field in 2004, but will mainly be used as an outfielder. Senior Joe Havis is eager to have a big season in 2004, as he has served as the team's fourth outfielder in his first three years for the Big Blue. Havis looks to be the frontrunner to play centerfield replacing four-year starter and all-CCIW player Matt Eichhorn. Havis hit .474 in 2003 appearing in 21 games and starting 5 of them. Gabe Lozano is another player who looks to have an expanded role in 2004. Lozano can play any of the outfield positions. Lozano hit .556 in 2003 appearing in 14 games as a substitute. Freshmen Eric Law looks to be in the mix for some playing time right away and these four should battle for the bulk of the playing time in 2004. The infield will feature all new starters for the Big Blue in 2004 with some returners playing larger roles and newcomers trying to get on the field. First base looks to be a battle between three players. Senior Jon Sawyer has been a solid utility man for the Big Blue in the past and is looking to settle in at first base. As well as hitting .556 and appearing in 7 games for the Big Blue in 2003, Sawyer was 2-1 on the mound through 14 plus innings. John Lambert is another quality player in the mix for the job at first base. Lambert hit .375 appearing in 6 games for the Big Blue and has a load of potential to hit the long ball. Transfer Patrick Ryan (SIUE) also looks to be in this mix for the Big Blue and could also see time on the mound in 2004. The middle infield for the Big Blue could have a variety of combinations in 2004. Four players look to fight for the majority of the play- ing time at these positions. Returners Bob Peck and Jim Williams are two of the aforementioned players. Williams is a slick fielding second basemen while Peck is a natural short stop. Two other players competing for playing time are Junior College transfers. Matt Wyatt (Lewis & Clark CC) is a second basemen that will compete for time at that position and could also play shortstop or third base. Justin Small (Rock Valley CC) is someone that could play second base, shortstop, or third base and will probably move around the infield in 2004. Chad Cline looks the favorite to start the season at the hot corner for the Big Blue. Cline appeared in seven games in 2003 starting one. Chad will be expect- ed to far exceed those totals in 2004. Cline had a tremendous fall practice and will be expected to be a key contributor as a leader in the clubhouse and as a force in the middle of the line-up. Behind the plate the Big Blue look to be very young and very talented. George Fear had a great fall and will see a good amount of time as the Big Blue's backstop. Two other talented players that were not with the Big Blue in the fall could also see significant time. Corey Getz, a red-shirt-freshmen transfer looks to come in and immediately help the Big Blue. RJ Spehn is another very talented freshmen that comes to the baseball program after playing football in the fall and will be in the mix as well. The expectation level for the Millikin University Baseball program has been continually raised the last five years. The program has established itself as a winning one. However, the players and coaching staff will not be satisfied until the conference crown comes to Decatur . Obtaining a top-notch education, maturing as adults, and winning the CCIW are the ultimate goals of the 2004 Millikin University baseball team.
