When James finished at Launceston Grammar he moved straight to Hobart in with the Jubb family who he remains very close with to start his professional career. James was awarded a rookie contract with Tasmania ahead of the 2007/08 Summer and then was a member of the 2008 Australian Under 19 World Cup team. He made both his List A and First Class debut in December 2008 against Queensland. From the Summer of 2010/11 until 2012/13 were 3 breakout years for James, he was the main driving force behind Tasmania making all 3 Sheffield Shield finals, winning two of them with James being Man of the Match in the 2012/13 final. James also took home the Ricky Ponting Medal in all 3 of these seasons as Tasmania’s best player for the year. He received his first International cap in February 2012 in a T20I against India and the following year made his ODI and Test match debuts. As James established himself in the ODI team he quickly got the nickname The Finisher due to his calmness batting with the tail under pressure leading Australia to victory on multiple occasions including Mohali in 2013 against India scoring 64 not out off 29 balls to get Australia home with 3 balls remaining and in 2014 against England at the Gabba where he made 69 not out off 47 balls to get Australia home by 1 wicket with 3 balls remaining. © TLA Worldwide 2020 TLAWorldwide.com His greatest individual match was saved for the greatest stage of them all, he was awarded Man of the Match in the 2015 World Cup Final taking 3/36 including the two top run scorers to put the clamps on New Zealand and help Australia to victory.     13 PRASHANT KIDAMBI Hero, celebrity and icon: Sachin Tendulkar and Indian public culture* When he completed twenty years in international cricket in November 2009, Sachin Tendulkar reaffi rmed his status as one of the greatest public icons of post-independence India. Ever since his genius was fi rst glimpsed on the maidans of Bombay over two decades ago, Tendulkar has reigned supreme as a sporting idol, his popularity cutting across the boundaries of caste, class, gender, region and religion. Curiously, however, there has been relatively little scholarly scrutiny of the Tendulkar phenomenon and what it might tell us about the changing nature of Indian public culture. This chapter attempts to understand, and account for, Sachin Tendulkar’s enduring hold over the Indian public imagination by exploring three facets of his remarkable career. The fi rst section considers, in historical context, Tendulkar as ‘hero’: someone who displays superlative skills and performs spectacular feats. An analysis of popular sporting fi gures needs to reckon with the ways in which their attributes and accomplishments on the fi eld of play are crucial to their elevation as heroes. However, the analytical prism of the ‘hero’ is insuffi cient in itself in accounting for Tendulkar’s fame. The second section suggests that Tendulkar’s celebrity is an attendant effect of the intensifi ed relationship between cricket, television and money in con- temporary India. At the same time, the immense power and resonance of Tendulkar’s image within Indian society makes him more than a frothy con- fection of the sport–media nexus. The fi nal section argues that as a national icon Tendulkar embodies the aspirations of millions of Indians.

    The Use of Salary Caps in Professional Team Sports and the Restraint of Trade Doctrine Chris Davies' A salary cap system is presently used by both the AFL and NRL with the stated objective of creating a more even competition. Although the salary cap can be viewed as creating a situation where players are being deliberately underpaid, the author argues that there is overall benefit, even to the players, in having a salary cap in operation. Such benefit includes a more even competition, which then provides for a more stable financial situation for the league and the players, and a more interesting competition for the spectators. The author therefore argues that, after applying the Nordenfelt test, salary caps in professional team sports do represent a reasonable restraint of trade. It is also suggested that the principles of contract law play an important role in protecting the rights of the players. Introduction The salary caps implemented by both the Australian Football League (AFL) and the National Rugby League (NRL) were the subject of much publicity during the later half of 2002 when systematic breaches of the system were uncovered in both codes. Large fines and the loss of either draft selections or competition points were the harsh penalties that were subsequently handed out by the respective governing bodies. What has also made headlines in the AFL has been the number of clubs who hav~been forced to trade big name players in the last few years, including players still under contract, in order to remain under the salary cap. I Other players meanwhile agreed to take pay cuts from their existing contracts to help ensure their club remained within the salary cap.2 A question then arises as to whether this forced trading of players and the taking of pay cuts means that a salary cap system represents an unreasonable restraint of trade.
