We Are Delighted to Welcome You Back to Emirates Old Trafford for the Final Home Game in the Group Stage of This Season's ISSUE TWO 2021 (v KENT) PRODUCED BY THE HERITAGE TEAM We are delighted to welcome you back to Emirates Old Trafford for the final home game in the group stage of this season’s LV= Insurance County Championship campaign against Kent. Please contact Rev Malcolm Lorimer ([email protected]) LANCASHIRE V YORKSHIRE RIVALRY RESUMES Lancashire conjured up a first Roses victory since 2011 with an outstanding bowling performance on the final day of last month’s match at Emirates Old Trafford claiming the final Yorkshire wicket with just 40 balls to spare in a dramatic finale. An inspired spell from Saqib Mahmood finished off stubborn White Rose resistance with his 5-47 also his maiden five-wicket haul. The victory by an innings & 79 runs was Lancashire’s first innings victory over Yorkshire since 2007 and the first at Emirates Old Trafford since 1972 and only the second home innings victory against the White Rose side since 1913. Lancashire travel to Headingley for the return fixture next Sunday rather than Scarborough, due to a recent change of venue, for the final group match in the Championship campaign before the Division playoff stages begin at the end of August. Here are the group standings with two games to go and with the top two teams advancing into Division One. James will become the first Lancashire bowler since Jack Simmons in 1989 to achieve this remarkable feat, and the 14th Red Rose bowler to do so overall. Of the 995 wickets James has taken, most have been at Emirates Old Trafford (160) followed by Lord’s (113), Trent Bridge (77), Edgbaston (57) and The Oval (50). His biggest wicket haul abroad is at Adelaide (27) while Chelmsford (25) is his most on a non-Test match ground. As far as opponents are concerned, James has taken more wickets against India (118) than any other team, which hopefully is good news ahead of this summer’s Test series! After India, Australia are second on the list of opponents’ wickets taken (104) followed by South Africa (93). Against domestic opposition, Worcestershire top the list (31) followed by Essex and Yorkshire (both 30). lancashirecricket.co.uk Matchday Archive lancashirecricket.co.uk BOHANNON AND MAHMOOD CAPPED Congratulations to Josh Bohannon and Saqib Mahmood who were awarded their Lancashire County Caps at Emirates Old Trafford last month. Bohannon and Mahmood, both 24, have progressed through the Lancashire Cricket Academy together and received their Caps from Director of Cricket Paul Allott ahead of the Vitality Blast match against Notts Outlaws. Pace bowler Mahmood and all-rounder Bohannon have both become regulars in all formats for the Red Rose, with Mahmood also going on to represent England in limited overs cricket. Speaking during the presentation, Allott said: “This is a tradition which has been taking place here since the 1860s with well over 200 players who have received their Lancashire County Cap. “This is a sign that you have reached a level of performance and maturity which has been acknowledged by your fellow players, coaches and the Board. “I would like to congratulate both Saqib and Josh on this achievement.” STEVEN CROFT REACHES T20 LANDMARK Steven Croft played his 200th T20 game when he took to the field for the Vitality Blast match against at Durham at Emirates Riverside last month. ‘Crofty’s’ feat includes a remarkable run of a record 148 consecutive T20 appearances by any player in England & Wales and is second in world T20 cricket behind S.K.Raina’s 158 consecutive appearances for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Some highlights of Steven’s T20 career:- • Captained Lancashire Lightning to the T20 title in 2015 • His 200 T20 matches comprised 183 Lancs, 7 Auckland, 10 Northern Districts • Most Player of the Match awards for Lancs (12) • Most runs for Lancs (3,821) • Most fifties for Lancs (19) • 3rd fastest T20 fifty for Lancs (off 22 balls) v Worcestershire at Worcester 2010 • 71 wickets for Lancs-2nd highest • Most catches for Lancs (111) • Highest Score 94* v Derbyshire at Emirates Old Trafford 2015 (also the highest score by Lancs no.4 batsman) & 94 v Worcestershire at Worcester 2019 (also the highest score by Lancs no.3 batsman) • Best Bowling 3-6 v Leicestershire at Leicester 2008 (101*) in 1979. RECENT 2021 MILESTONES Saqib Mahmood reached 50 wickets in County Championship matches when he dismissed Will Fraine, his 1st wicket in the Yorkshire first innings. Luke Wood reached 100 wickets in County Championship matches when he dismissed Harry Duke, his 1st wicket in the Yorkshire second innings. Alex Davies passed 4,500 runs in First-Class matches when he reached 17 in the first innings v Glamorgan at Cardiff. 1,500 T20 RUNS FOR ALEX Alex Davies also passed 1,500 T20 runs during his innings of 83 in the Vitality Blast against Derbyshire. It took Alex 62 innings, equal to Tom Smith and Karl Brown, but two innings more than Liam Livingstone’s best for Lancashire of 60 innings of the five batsmen to have reached this landmark. @lancscricket 0161 282 4000 Matchday Archive lancashirecricket.co.uk HERITAGE ITEMS RECEIVED People have been obviously clearing out their lofts during the lockdown! During the Yorkshire game we received a number of items for our Heritage Collection. CRICKET Ball - 1906 A cricket ball presented to Frank Harry by A.N.Hornby for taking 9-44 against Warwickshire in 1906. There is a very nice silver engraved band around the ball. This is on long term loan to the club. CRICKET BAT - 1936 A cricket bat signed by the Indian cricket team of 1936 at the drawn Old Trafford Test Match of that year. It is signed in ink so the signatures are well preserved. Don’t sign bats in modern ball-point pens-they fade!!! During the match Wally Hammond scored 167 and there were centuries from Vijay Merchant and Mushtaq Ali. ERNEST TYLDESLEYS BIBLE We have also received an interesting small Bible belonging to Ernest Tyldesley, signed by him. The Tyldesley family, J.T (Johnny) & Ernest were members of Roe Green Methodist Chapel at Worsley and their baptisms are recorded in the Baptismal book (along with the another Test Cricketer-can you name them?). The Club expanded its activities beyond the playing field again, especially in relation to re- establishing a golf section and also organised several successful cricket lunches, a Christmas harbour cruise and a bowls afternoon. A tour to England is proceeding this winter with another proposed tour to Samoa next Easter in an advanced planning stage. Pakistan claimed the honours in the dress rehearsal for the final with a memo- rable victory over the world champions in a dramatic day/night encounter at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. The game lived up to its billing right from the onset as Saeed Anwar and Saleem Elahi tore into the Australia attack. Elahi was in particularly impressive form, blast- ing 79 from 91 balls as Pakistan plundered 290 from their 50 overs. But, never wanting to be outdone, the Australians responded in fine style with Adam Gilchrist attacking the Pakistan bowling with equal relish. The wicketkeep- er sensationally raced to his 20th one-day international half-century in just 29 balls on his way to a quick-fire 70. Once Saqlain Mushtaq had ended his 44-ball knock however, skipper Waqar Younis stepped up to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The pace star is bowling as well as he has done in years as his side come to the end of their tour of England and his figures of six for 59 fully deserved the man of the match award and to take his side to victory.

JACK MARSH HISTORY LECTURE 2015 Written and delivered by Gideon Haigh Sydney Cricket Ground Wednesday 21 January 2015 JackHISTORY Marsh LECTURE “When he came he (2 opened the windows of the mind to a new vision of what batting could be” How Victor Trumper Changed Cricket Forever (1) My title, which seems to combine Aldous Huxley’s doors (1) Feline tribute: Gideon with his cat ‘Trumper’ of perception with Dusty Springfield’s windmills of your mind, is actually from a rather less exotic source, Johnnie Moyes. The journalist and broadcaster Moyes may be unique in tightness of affiliation with both Victor Trumper and Donald Bradman: he was an opponent of the former, a biographer of the latter, a friend and idolator of both. He also links the man in whose name tonight’s inaugural lecture has been endowed. Six-year-old Moyes first met Trumper one summer evening in December 1900 when his father, a schoolteacher, invited the visiting New South Wales team to their home in Adelaide. In The Changing Face of Cricket, Moyes recalled that he was at first less taken by Trumper than by his teammate Jack Marsh: “I do not remember now whether I had seen a coloured man, but certainly I hadn’t seen one who was playing first-class (2) Iconic image: the photo that began the Trumper legend cricket, and Marsh fascinated me. What a grand bowler he must have been!” It was only a few weeks later that Trumper and Marsh participated in the Federation Sports Carnival, finishing first and second in the competition for throwing a cricket ball here.

Members Forum Minutes 1st September 2016 Chairman Introduction and Update The Chairman introduced Members to the panel that consisted of: Daniel Gidney, CEO Anthony Mundy, Operations Director Justin Hopwood, Sales & Marketing Director Amanda Fearn, Chair of the Members’ Representative Group Ashley Giles, Head Coach and Cricket Director The Club is in a good position overall. The commercial areas are doing OK but it has got tougher, there is obviously an element in business of people holding back a little until they find out more about what is going to happen and how the economy is going to run, are interest rates going to change etc. That is very important to us as an awful lot of money that is spent here is personal money and with savings rates not being what we would like them to be that is not helping. Overall we are in decent shape. We had the most phenomenal function in The Point on Saturday night for a leading family in the area, an 80th birthday party and the cabaret was Kylie Minogue and Ronan Keating. The event went absolutely brilliantly. It’s the largest private function since The Point opened. Manchester United are with us again this season so those numbers are up again. As far as cricket is concerned (not here but the way cricket is going) I’ve mentioned on numerous occasions the concern that everybody has with Test Match attendances. The Pakistan Test Match here turned out to be very good but it was a hard sell. Correspondingly the T20 that is coming up next week has had phenomenal attraction and is a sell out and should be a very good game.
