In this unit we examine the causes of the Great War, the unsatisfactory conclusion of it, the events leading up to the Second World War, and the shape of international relations after that conflict. We focus on the inspiring leadership of Britain’s Winston Churchill and look at the cultural history of Japan to understand a country that once was an enemy and is now an ally. The Antarctic region was the scene of seal hunting beginning in 1790, when Americans first ventured into the area to pursue this trade. Amundsen led a team that arrived at the geographic South Pole in 1911. British explorer Ernest Shackleton led an expedition in 1914 that attempted to cross the continent of Antarctica, but his ship Endurance (pictured at right) became trapped in the ice. Though his crew was stranded through the winter of 1914-1915, all 28 members were eventually rescued.

The third segment of the programme, which was held at Headquarters, was aimed in particular at familiarizing the fellows with the work of the First Committee of the General Assembly and the activities of the Office for Disarmament Affairs of the Secretariat.

    Volume 13 | Issue 32 | Number 2 | Article ID 4356 | Aug 10, 2015 The Asia-Pacific Journal | Japan Focus The Politics of Reconstruction and Reconciliation in U.S-Japan Relations—Dismantling the Atomic Bomb Ruins of Nagasaki’s Urakami Cathedral Tomoe Otsuki Abstract: This paper explores the politics surrounding the dismantling of the ruins of Nagasaki’s Urakami Cathedral. It shows how U.S-Japan relations in the mid-1950s shaped the 1958 decision by the Catholic community of Urakami to dismantle and subsequently to reconstruct the ruins. The paper also assesses the significance of the struggle over the ruins of the Urakami Cathedral for understanding the respective responses to atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It further casts new light on the wartime role of the Catholic Church and of Nagai Takashi. Keywords: Nagasaki, Atomic Bomb, Urakami Cathedral, the People-to-People program, Lucky Dragon # 5 incident, Japanese antinuclear movement, the peaceful use of nuclear energy, sister city relation between Nagasaki and St. Paul, U.S.-Japan Security Alliance.     ABSTRACT Title of Document: WORLD WAR II AND U.S. CINEMA: RACE, NATION, AND REMEMBRANCE IN POSTWAR FILM, 1945-1978 Robert Keith Chester, Ph.D., 2011 Co-Directed By: Dr. Gary Gerstle, Professor of History, Vanderbilt University Dr. Nancy Struna, Professor of American Studies, University of Maryland, College Park This dissertation interrogates the meanings retrospectively imposed upon World War II in U.S. motion pictures released between 1945 and the mid-1970s. Focusing on combat films and images of veterans in postwar settings, I trace representations of World War II between war‘s end and the War in Vietnam, charting two distinct yet overlapping trajectories pivotal to the construction of U.S. identity in postwar cinema. The first is the connotations attached to U.S. ethnoracial relations – the presence and absence of a multiethnic, sometimes multiracial soldiery set against the hegemony of U.S. whiteness – in depictions of the war and its aftermath. The second is Hollywood‘s representation (and erasure) of the contributions of the wartime Allies and the ways in which such images engaged with and negotiated postwar international relations. Contrary to notions of a ―good war‖ untainted by ambiguity or dissent, I argue that World War II gave rise to a conflicted cluster of postwar meanings. At times, notably in the early postwar period, the war served as a progressive summons to racial reform. At other times, the war was inscribed as a historical moment in which U.S. racism was either nonexistent or was laid permanently to rest. In regard to the Allies, I locate a Hollywood dialectic between internationalist and unilateralist remembrances.

Schools, museums, NGOs, and individuals all contribute to the basic goals of peace education—learning from the past and cultivating mutual understanding between cultures so that citizens will make rational future choices regarding violence and nonviolence. Eleven participants were selected for this study tour from the more than 17,000 teachers in the U.S. who have completed a National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) 30-hour seminar on East Asia. From June 20–July 3, 2013, the educators and leaders traveled to Japan to learn about peace education in Japan and create curricula for use in their own class- rooms back in the U.S. In Nagasaki, we visited the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Vic- tims, the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, and the Peace Park.
