  • No. 32 Department of Defence
Defence Submission to the Standing Committee on State Development Inquiry into Defence Industry in New South Wales Summary 1. Defence welcomes the New South Wales (NSW) Government’s and Parliament’s interest in strengthening local defence industry to support Australia’s defence and national security. With the release of the 2016 Defence White Paper, Integrated Investment Program, and Defence Industry Policy Statement on 25 February 2016 and the Naval Shipbuilding Plan on 16 May 2017, there is clear direction to implement a major renewal of Defence capability and with it a strengthening of Australia’s defence industry. The scale and long-term nature of Defence’s requirements, including in areas such as the continuous naval shipbuilding programs, require a national approach and partnership between Defence and State and Territory Governments. 2. Australia’s industrial base is a fundamental enabler of Australia’s military capabilities, and an integral element of the nation’s defence. Defence welcomes the announcement of the NSW Government’s Defence and Industry Strategy – Strong, Smart and Connected and the establishment of Defence NSW. Defence also welcomes increasing collaboration between NSW and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in the defence sector. 3. Through new and expanded policies and programs, Defence is supporting Australia’s defence industry to develop the right technology, skills and capabilities to meet Defence’s current and future needs. There are considerable opportunities for local defence industry to contribute to Defence, with accompanying economic and community benefits. Ensuring that NSW businesses are aware of the opportunities and can leverage the support available from Defence and the broader Commonwealth is an important objective for collaboration between Defence, the NSW Government, and NSW industry.

  • Hornet Fv1620
HORNET FV1620 Clive Elliott explains how the development of the Hornet missile launcher. The Hornet missile launcher was developed under the FVRDE design specification FV1620. Depending on the stage of development the vehicle was identified as: Truck, 1 Ton, Armoured Launcher, 4x4, Humber. Launcher, Guided Missile, Truck Mounted. Truck, 1 Ton, Airportable Launcher, 4x4. Launcher, Guided Missile, Truck Mounted (Malkara) Armoured, 1 Ton, 4x4, Humber Hornet. The Humber 1-Ton trucks were introduced in the early 1950s and were designated by the Fighting Vehicle Research & Development Establishment (FVRDE) as the FV1600 series. They demonstrate how a wide range of variants can be based on a cargo truck. Other 1-Ton trucks of the time, like the Austin K9 (FV16000 series) and Morris MRA/1 (FV16100 series) were based on a commercial chassis, but the Humber was developed exclusively for military use and was the only ‘standardised’ 1-Ton truck. Standardised, means that it has some components that are shared with other standardised vehicles such as Champ, Ferret, Saracen etc. Of all the Humber variants the armoured version known as the Pig saw the longest service and is the most widely known variant. But the most ingenious variant must be the Hornet (FV1620) which became the launch vehicle for the Malkara Anti-Tank Guided Weapon (ATGW). The adoption of Malkara by the British Army spawned a range of other Humber variants to supply, test and repair the Malkara system. It has been said that the Hornet was a rather improvised vehicle and that a better launch vehicle could have been designed.

  • Monana the OFFICIAL PUBLICATION of the AUSTRALIAN METEOROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION INC June 2017 “Forecasting the November 2015 Pinery Fires”
Monana THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE AUSTRALIAN METEOROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION INC June 2017 “Forecasting the November 2015 Pinery Fires”. Matt Collopy, Supervising Meteorologist, SA Forecasting Centre, BOM. At the AMETA April 2017 meeting, Supervising Meteorologist of the Bureau of Meteorology South Australian Forecasting Centre, gave a fascinating talk on forecasting the conditions of the November 2015 Pinery fires, which burnt 85,000ha 80 km north of Adelaide. The fire started during the morning of Wednesday 25th November 2015 ahead of a cold frontal system. Winds from the north reached 45-65km/h and temperatures reached the high 30’s, ahead of the change, with the west to southwest wind change reaching the area at around 2:30pm. Matt’s talk highlighted the power of radar imagery in improving the understanding of the behaviour of the fire. The 10 minute radar scans were able to show ash, and ember particles being lofted into the atmosphere, and help identify where the fire would be spreading. The radar also gave insight into the timing of the wind change- vital information as the wind change greatly extends the fire front. Buckland Park radar image from 2:30pm (0400 UTC) on 25/11/2015 showing fine scale features of the Pi- nery fire, and lofted ember particles. 1 Prediction of fire behaviour has vastly improved, with Matt showing real-time predictions of fire behaviour overlain with resulting fire behaviour on the day. This uses a model called Phoenix, into which weather model predicted conditions, and vegetation information are fed to provide a model of expected fire behaviour.

Nicklas © Smithsonian Institution, 2003 NASM Archives Desind Collection 1997-0014 Herbert Stephen Desind Collection 109 Cubic Feet, 305 Boxes Biographical Note Herbert Stephen Desind was a Washington, DC area native born on January 15, 1945, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and educated at the University of Maryland. He obtained his BA degree in Communications at Maryland in 1967, and began working in the local public schools as a science teacher. At the time of his death, in October 1992, he was a high school teacher and a freelance writer/lecturer on spaceflight. Desind also was an avid model rocketeer, specializing in using the Estes Cineroc, a model rocket with an 8mm movie camera mounted in the nose. To many members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), he was known as “Mr. Cineroc.” His extensive requests worldwide for information and photographs of rocketry programs even led to a visit from FBI agents who asked him about the nature of his activities. Mr. Desind used the collection to support his writings in NAR publications, and his building scale model rockets for NAR competitions. Desind also used the material in the classroom, and in promoting model rocket clubs to foster an interest in spaceflight among his students. Desind entered the NASA Teacher in Space program in 1985, but it is not clear how far along his submission rose in the selection process. He was not a semi-finalist, although he had a strong application.
