Walker created a book entitled, “Trooper”, a compilation of 10 interviews with Patrol retirees. Twenty-five years later, these interviews have become part of our treasured history. The Patrol owes Sgt. Walker (who is now retired and resides in Jefferson City, Missouri) a debt of gratitude for preserving the memories of these pioneers. It is now 2006, and the Patrol is celebrating its 75th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, the Public Information and Education Division is printing a book called “To Serve & Protect”. In this edition, you’ll find the original interviews by Sgt. Walker, and 12 recent interviews by Public Information Specialist III Cheryl D. Cobb, Q/PIED. As Sgt. Walker said in the preface of “Trooper”: For those of you whose long-time friends are featured in these pages, we hope your reading brings back fond memories. Ricks Q/PIED 4 1980 INTERVIEWS 5 MATILDA “TILLIE” SONNEN With a career that spanned four de- cades and part of a fifth, Tillie Sonnen owns the distinction of having the longest working career of any Highway Patrol em- ployee: 40 years. She was there at the Patrol’s modest beginning and witnessed the growth of the department to a force of over 700 officers. Always a dedicated em- ployee, Tillie exhibits a ready humor and zest for life, undiminished by the passage of time. “If they like you, they’ll hire you perma- nently. If they don’t, you’re gone, no ques- tions asked.” That’s what I was told before taking temporary employment at the Missouri Highway Department Headquarters here in Jefferson City. The official drum was very close, from three beats, to four and then five, gradually faster, hastening the dawn. Suddenly in the northeast the sound of a bell, a bell pure and clean through rain-cleared air, and hearing it came thoughts of waiting for the dawn, rising and doing. It was inevitable. My nature is such as to enjoy sitting in the night [yezuo]. So I often spread a book under the lamp going back and forth over it, usually stopping at the second watch.

On the opposite side of that, you might hear an orchestra in which the only job of the percussionists is to create interesting sounds and colors on top of a the string section. In jazz, the drummer plays both a crucial part in creating a strong foundation, and helping add color and shape to the music. The first step is creating that strong foundation with the ride cymbal! The phrasing of the ride cymbal is based around the quarter note, however instead of thinking in eighth notes (like most rock music on the radio today), we want to think in eighth note triplets.

In the front seat BONNIE PARKER (22) is asleep on the shoulder of her lover CLYDE BARROW (23) who is driving at near light speed. The Ford’s headlights dimly light the road making it truly hard to see what is out there. Clyde passes a bridge out sign. Suddenly... EXT. BRIDGE--CONTINUED the Ford crashes through the road block--it instantly launched into the air. It comes smashing down rolling three times--the Ford is destroyed but standing upright. The Ford’s fuel line has become split--it is leaking fuel. The cable has come loose from the battery. All three passengers are knocked out. Clyde first to awake gets out of the car--blood running down his nose. He stumbles around trying to gain conciseness. He pulls W.D. out from the wreckage--returning to get Bonnie next. W.D. awakens--he is at Clyde’s side helping to pull Bonnie from the car. Then... a spark from the loose battery cord starts a fire. Flames begin to cover the hood. W.D. starts to kick dirt on the fire--it doesn’t help.

Worse yet, there's wide disagreement among accomplished and highly educated poets, too. There's really only one point we all agree on - poems are meant to be read aloud. Beyond that, it gets dicey, but here are some things to consider. Former poet laureate Billy Collins says, "Obviously, poems come in lines, but pausing at the end of every line will create a choppy effect and interrupt the flow of the poem's sense. Readers should pause only where there is punctuation, just as you would when reading prose, only more slowly." Look at the text of his poem "You, Reader" (at left) as you listen to him read it, and you'll see what he means. Julie Patterson is associate director and writer-in-residence at the Indiana Partnership for Young Writers.     It’s been more than 80 years since that early morning of May 23, 1934, when a hail of bullets ripped through their car on a rural road about an hour east of Shreveport, Louisiana, and ended their lives. But just as the lives of other bad guys such as the James brothers and Billy the Kid have been romanticized, so too have been the lives of Bonnie and Clyde. BONNIE What made their story so romantic? Was it their youth and the love they shared? Or the dangerous life they lived? Or that they robbed wealthy banks when so many were so AND poor? Perhaps all of the above. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow grew up in the slums of West Dallas.
