The Book of Judges Lesson One Introduction to the Book by Dr. John L. May I. The Historical Background - Authorship Dates of the events of the book are uncertain. It is a book about and to the children of Israel (Judges 1:1). Since the book is a continuation of history following the book of Joshua, many scholars believe that it was written after the death of Joshua (after 1421 BC). However, others think that it was written even later than this, for Judges 18:1 and 19:1 imply that there was a king in Israel at the time of writing. That would necessitate a date of 1095 BC or later. If you base your belief upon Judges 1:21, 29, a date of approximately 1000 BC would be a date that would place its writing during the time of Samuel and the reign of the kings. This would tie in nicely with the Jewish tradition that the author was Samuel. There is neither an inspired statement nor an implication as to the place of composition To determine the time span involved in this book, it is unlikely that the years each judge is said to have ruled could be added together, for the total would exceed 490 years. However, Wesley states in his notes on the Book of Judges that the total is only 299 years. The reason for this is that their years of service may coincide or overlap with the years of some or other of the judges and this allows Wesley to arrive at his figure. -

14. BIBLICAL EPIC: 2 Chronicles Notes rown 2 Chron 1: Solomon made offerings. God said, "What shall I give you?" Solomon said, "Wisdom to rule this people." So Solomon ruled over Israel. • 1:1-6. Solomon Worships at Gibeon. Solomon’s journey to the Mosaic tabernacle and altar at Gibeon, like David’s mission to retrieve the Ark, is presented as a public enterprise that involves all Israel. Like David, Solomon maintains continuity with the Mosaic covenant as the foundation of his own reign. Solomon begins his reign as David instructed him (1 Chron 22:19), by worshiping God and seeking guidance. “High places” were commonly associated with hills or mountains in the OT world. Prior to the construction of the temple, high places were generic worship sites that were not necessarily connected with pagan worship. The negative connotation of high places begins after the completion of the temple, after which high places were associated with idolatry and syncretism. Solomon’s extensive sacrifice at Gibeon tangibly showed his reverence for God at the outset of his reign. • 1:7-13. Solomon’s Request for Wisdom. Solomon’s faithful seeking leads to a nighttime appearance of God (in a dream, according to 1 Kings 3:5), in which God invites Solomon to ask in prayer for whatever he desires. Solomon makes two requests: (1) that God would continue to bring the fullness of the Davidic covenant (and the Abrahamic covenant) to pass (looking forward to the completion of the temple, 2 Chron 6:17) and (2) that God would grant him wisdom and knowledge. -
What Is Biblical Prophecy?
What is Biblical Prophecy? What Biblical Prophecy is NOT, and What It Really IS: Contrary to what many fundamentalist preachers or late-night radio hosts would have you believe, biblical prophecy is not primarily about “predicting the future” or finding clues in the Bible that correspond to people or events in our own day and age! The prophets of Ancient Israel did not look into some kind of crystal ball and see events happening thousands of years after their own lifetimes. The books they wrote do not contain hidden coded messages for people living in the 20th or 21st centuries! Rather, biblical prophets were mainly speaking to and writing for the people of their own time. They were challenging people of their own world, especially their political rulers, to remain faithful to God’s commandments and/or to repent and turn back to God if they had strayed. They were conveying messages from God, who had called or commissioned them, rather than speaking on their own initiative or authority. However, because the biblical prophets were transmitting messages on behalf of God (as Jews and Christians believe), much of what they wrote for their own time is clearly also relevant for people living in the modern world. The overall message of faith and repentance is timeless and applicable in all ages and cultures. To understand what biblical prophecy really is, let’s look more closely at the origins, definitions, and uses of some key biblical words. In the Hebrew Bible, the word for “prophet” is usually nabi’ (lit. “spokesperson”; used over 300 times!), while the related feminine noun nebi’ah (“prophetess”) occurs only rarely. -

Beyond identifying the coming-of-age theme in different HB texts, the project also describes how the theme is employed by biblical narrators and redactors to highlight broader messages and transitions in the historical narratives of the HB. It also considers how these stories provide insight into the varying representations of biblical masculinity. The project begins by showing how the recent discussions on masculinity in the HB and biblical rites of passage are incomplete without an analysis of how a boy becomes a man in the biblical text. -

Notes on Judges 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE The English title, "Judges," comes to us from the Latin translation (Vulgate), which the Greek translation (Septuagint) influenced. In all three languages, the title means "judges." This title is somewhat misleading, however, because most English-speaking people associate the modern concept of a "judge" with Israel's "judges." As we shall see, judges then were very different from judges now. The Hebrew title is also "Judges" (Shophetim). The book received its name from its principal characters, as the Book of Joshua did. The "judge" in Israel was not a new office during the period of history that this book records. Moses had ordered the people to appoint judges in every Israelite town to settle civil disputes (Deut. 16:18). In addition, there was to be a "chief justice" at the tabernacle who would, with the high priest, help settle cases too difficult for the local judges (Deut. 17:9). Evidently there were several judges at the tabernacle who served jointly as Israel's "Supreme Court" (Deut. 19:17). When Joshua died, God did not appoint a man to succeed him as the military and political leader of the entire nation of Israel. Instead, each tribe was to proceed to conquer and occupy its allotted territory. As the need arose, God raised up several different individuals who were "judges," in various parts of Israel at various times, to lead segments of the Israelites against local enemies. In the broadest sense, the Hebrew word shophet, translated "judge," means "bringer of justice." The word was used in ancient Carthage and Ugarit to describe civil magistrates.1 1Charles F. -

THROUGH THE BIBLE STUDY JUDGES 13-16 The California redwoods are one of the wonders of nature. They’re colossal. The trees are skyscrapers - their girth is gigantic - they’re kings of the forest. And nothing is as impressive as the falling of one of these redwoods… The cutters score the tree trunk. They move the saw back and forth, and the cut deepens. Soon, the tree starts to bend. It leans further and further from the cutters. Before long you hear the cracking of wood fibers. With each slice of the saw the noise builds. Eventually, it swells to a roar. The tree begins to fall. If you’re underneath it seems that the sky is falling. The trunk explodes along the cut-line, and the tree crashes to the forest floor. It sounds like thunder. Tonight, I need to yell “TIIIIIIMBEEEER…” - for we’re going to watch the falling of a redwood… not of a giant tree, but a giant of a man. Samson was huge – not necessarily in physical stature, but in privilege, and power, and effectiveness for God. Samson was a Nazirite (dedicated to God). He came from a godly home - served in an important post - was feared by his enemies - was used by God in supernatural ways. Samson was God’s Strongman. He was a divine vigilante – a one-man wrecking crew. Samson was a redwood. Yet Samson fell… The saw slides back and forth - the !1 slender score line around his heart deepens – he leans – finally cracks – Samson falls hard. We’ve all met a Samson – a person who had it all… beautiful spouse, good job, healthy kids, good reputation, effective ministry. -

NAME OF THE BOOK A. The name of the book in Hebrew is “the words (events) of the days (years).” This is used in the sense of “a chronicle of the years.” These same words occur in the title of several books mentioned as written sources in 1 Kings 14:19,29; 15:7,23,31; 16:5,14,20,27; 22:46. The phrase itself is used over thirty times in 1 and 2 Kings and is usually translated “chronicles.” B. The LXX entitled it “the things omitted (concerning the Kings of Judah).” This implies that Chronicles is to Samuel and Kings what the Gospel of John is to the Synoptic Gospels. See How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth, by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart, pp. 127-148. As the Gospel writers under inspiration (see Special Topic: Inspiration) had the right to select, adapt, and arrange the life of Jesus (not invent actions or words), so too, the inspired authors of OT narratives (see Expository Hermeneutics: An Introduction, by Elliott E. Johnson, p. 169). This selection, adaptation, and chronological/thematic arrangement of words/events was to convey theological truth. History is used as a servant of theology. Chronicles has suffered, much as the Gospel of Mark did. They were both seen as “Readers Digest” summaries and not “a full history.” This is unfortunate! Both have an inspired message. -

McLain I Prophets in United Monarchy I 35 The Function of the Prophets in the United Monarchy CHARLES E McLAIN, Th M Professor, Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary The purpose for the origin of the prophetic office, according to Freeman, was for "guarding Israel against Canaan's superstitious practices, as well as those of her neighbors .... Because of this, Moses announced the forming of the prophetic office for the purpose of continuing the divine revelation through the line of prophets." 1 Therefore in a survey of any portion of Israel's history subsequent to Moses in which prophets are ministering, the two basic functions of revelation and guardianship should be found. On the other hand, with the passage of time a certain development can be expected in relation to such things as Israel's establishment in the land, the raising up of the judges, the background of the persons called to be prophets, the establishment of the monarchy, and the giving of additional revelation by God. During the period of the United Monarchy the ministries of three named prophets are recorded-Samuel, Nathan, and Gad. A survey of the Scripture dealing with their ministries indicates that they functioned in three general areas. First, in the realm of revelation they functioned as revealers of God's word and preachers of God's message. Second, in the realm of intercession they functioned as priest and prayer warrior. Finally, in the realm of guardianship or administration they functioned as judge, king-maker, and advisor. The Prophetic Function in the Realm of Revelation In the area of revelation the prophets of the United Monarchy functioned both as revealers of God's word and preachers of God's message.
