BENJAMIN* Department of Integrative Biology, Section of Conservation Biology (NLU), University of Basel, St. Johanns-Vorstadt 10, CH-4056 Basel, Switzerland Received July 2003; accepted for publication February 2004 The subfamily Ballinae is revised. To test its monophyly, 41 morphological characters, including the first phyloge- netic use of scale morphology in Salticidae, were scored for 16 taxa (1 outgroup and 15 ingroup). Parsimony analysis of these data supports monophyly based on five unambiguous synapomorphies. The paper provides new diagnoses, descriptions of new genera, species, and a key to the genera. At present, Ballinae comprises 13 nominal genera, three of them new: Afromarengo, Ballus, Colaxes, Cynapes, Indomarengo, Leikung, Marengo, Philates and Sadies. Copocrossa, Mantisatta, Pachyballus and Padilla are tentatively included in the subfamily. Nine new species are described and illustrated: Colaxes horton, C. wanlessi, Philates szutsi, P. thaleri, P. zschokkei, Indomarengo chandra, I. -

This checklist includes 558 species, and there may be records in the literature that have eluded the author’s attention. This checklist of Illinois species has been compiled from sources cited below. The initials in parentheses that follow each species name and authorship in the list denote the paper or other source in which the species was reported. Wolff In order to study the ecology, taxonomy and biology of jumping spiders it is important to understand the local fauna. This preliminary list was prepared as the first step in such studies. The following list is compiled from the literature. Additional records from personal and museum collections will follow as part of another publication that is in preparation. The currently accepted names are given, along with the synonyms used in the published lists and works of other arachnologists concerned with the Midwestern fauna. The distribution by state, and the source of the record is given following the species name. The key to the sources is given at the end of the list. Based upon the literature and unreported species that should be found, it appears that 84 species of jumping spiders occur in the Great Lakes Region. Admestina tibialis (C. L. Edwards The occurrence of jumping spiders (Salticidae) as a group has not previously been reported for the state of South Carolina. Numerous records of individual species collected in the state are scattered throughout the literature but often the records and the identifications are questionable, especially in light of recent revisions of several important genera. In this report we present the results of several years collection of salticids in the state of South Carolina, and a listing of species which may occur, but have not been collected by us, or else have been reported as occurring in the state by other workers (indicated by an asterisk). Extensive use of the lists published by Richman and Cutler (1978) and Kaston (1980) has been made in formulating this report. Griswold's (1983) revision of Habronattus when published will undoubtedly change what we now know about this genus. 50 Since collections in the mountains and along the Georgia-South Carolina border have been limited, numerous species may be present which we have not collected, and these may be reported later if warranted. In all, about 80 species of salticids are known or suspected to occur in South Carolina at this time. *Admestina tibialis (C. L. Koch). During the last few years I have prepared for my private use a card catalogue of the Aranere of temperate North America as described by both American and European authors. I derive constantly so much benefit from this work that, with the thought that it will be equally useful for my colaborers in American arachnology, I herewith present it in the form of a catalogue. In the arrangement of the families I have adopted Professor Thorell's new system as offered in his important work, " On Dr. Bertkau's Classification of the Order Aranese " (Annals and Magazine of Natural History for April, 1886). I have, however, made such changes in this arrangement as seemed necessary to me. I first added to the suborder Tetrapneumones the tribus Umbellitela- rice for the family Hypochilidcv, for as Hypochilus possesses four distinct lamelar trachea) or luugs, each provided with a separate stigma, it must be placed amongst the four-lunged spiders ; but, as this genus (constituting at present alone the family Hypochilid(v) differs so widely in its morphological and anatomical characters from any Tetrapneu- monic form, I found myself obliged to establish a separate tribus for this family—the Umbellitelarice. a name suggested to me by Professor Thorell. Critical analysis of existing spider species lists for Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio. Indiana and Illinois reveals 900 species recorded from the five-state region (284 genera, 40 families). All non- native, Palearctic, or otherwise questionable species records were scrutinized, and their status is discussed. The most speciose families in the region are the Linyphiidae (almost 24% of species), Salticidae (10.3%), Theridiidae (8.9%), Lycosidae (8.8%), and Araneidae (7.7%). All sources used for spider species names and species records are unambiguously quoted. Spider species records are presented in tables allowing comparison of family composition among the states, and prediction of number of heretofore unrecorded species. Richness among states is analyzed and found to be dependent on varying degrees of sampling effort. As a new tool, a Spider Species Name Concordance Table allows tracking previously published spider species names to the currently valid name of every species record.
