SEPTEMBER 2018 NEWSLETTER NEWCASTLE UNITED DISABILITY NEWS NEWSLETTER FOR NEWCASTLE UNITED’S DISABLED SUPPORTERS AROUND THE WORLD SEPTEMBER 2018 NEWSLETTER NEWCASTLE UNITED 1. INTRODUCTION 2. NUFC AND STEPHEN 3. FOUNDATION NEWS 4. BOX OFFICE NEWS 5. SENSORY ROOM UPDATE 1. INTRODUCTION The new season is upon us and although we have faced the expected difficult start, we're all behind the team and believe in them wholeheartedly. The sensory room is now fully up and running, and is proving very popular. The wheelchair spaces have been increased, so we now have 234 slots available. There is more accessible seating in the Gallowgate. Change is always ongoing. I was at a meeting with the disabled supporters association (NUDSA) and they are this month celebrating 20 years in business. They are a quite remarkable group of individuals, who never fail to inspire me. The main protagonists are Gareth Beard, who you may remember had an article in last month’s newsletter and has been the Chair of NUDSA for years, Stephen Miller who is a highly decorated Paralympian, and writes in this newsletter, Ros Miller (Stephens mum / coach / boss) and the Leazes ender Joe Ayton who has been there since the start. They have produced a magnificent magazine which celebrates their 20 years and looks back at the journey. It is well worth a read if you can get a copy. NUDSA have been instrumental in working with NUFC to invoke a better deal for disabled supporters, and I hope they are even stronger in 2028 when they celebrate their 30th. Matches – 23 September 1972 – Newcastle 3 Leeds United 2 First Division – St James Park – 38,962 Scorers: Clarke, Jones Newcastle United: McFaul, Craig, Clark, Gibb, Howard, Young, Barrowclough, Smith, Macdonald (Hodgson), Tudor, Hibbitt Leeds United: Harvey, Reaney, Cherry, Bremner, Charlton, Hunter, Lorimer, Clarke (Jordan), Jones, Giles, Bates Leeds United travelled to play Newcastle United at the end of September 1972 in good heart after a series of results that had eased the memory of a grim 4-0 opening day defeat at Chelsea. They had won five and drawn one of their six home games and were unbeaten on their travels since the drubbing at Stamford Bridge. Nevertheless, one had to go back to September 1968 for United‟s previous victory on Tyneside and that was only the second victory at St James Park since Leeds regained their First Division status in 1964. Their previous visit, on 19 April 1972, had seem them lose by virtue of a Malcolm Macdonald goal after 81 minutes. That reverse severely hampered United‟s pursuit of the League title and was well deserved by an industrious and determined Newcastle team. Manager Don Revie was under no illusions about the size of the task facing his men, saying: “Newcastle usually manage to give us a hard fight The Yorkshire Evening Post of 23 September 1972 carries the news of an extraordinary game up there. I don‟t expect tomorrow‟s match to be different. We will have to try to clamp down on Macdonald and we must also keep a close watch on Terry Hibbitt, too.

  • Sir Bobby Charlton
EDUCATION PACK 2019 Activity 1 Matchbox Memories Activity 2 A Living For Northumberland Day 2019, we are running Northumbrian Legend ‘Matchbox Memories’ - an initiative with which we would like to get schools involved. – Sir Bobby Charlton We are inviting schoolchildren to write their favourite memory of Northumberland, so far in their lives, on a plain white matchbox. Alternatively, they could write it on a piece of paper and a teacher could then write on the boxes, as these are quite small. Another option is for children to take a matchbox home and collect a matchbox memory from a parent, or elderly family member. In this way, they can take part in an oral history exercise. We then wish to collect the memory boxes and put as many as possible on display. The children can add their name, or the name of the person who has given them their special memory, if they wish. We have a limited number of matchbox memory boxes available, but they can be bought at Amazon, if needs be. We could also possibly partner a school with a local sponsor, if we can find one for you. We’d love to have pictures of children working on their matchbox memories, or all holding one aloft for a photo. We will try to arrange for certain collection points, if you take part. This is a very special way to being generations together and find out what people have found special about Northumberland, past and present. We hope you have fun with it. One of the most famous Northumbrians alive today is a footballing legend and one of the few Englishmen to have won the World Cup football trophy.

  • Players – Terry Hibbitt – a Wayward Genius
Players – Terry Hibbitt – A wayward genius Terry Hibbitt‘s impressive entrance into senior football hinted that he could be one of the most glorious talents to emerge from Leeds United‘s golden generation of the Sixties. He was given his first team debut as an 18-year-old against Nottingham Forest on 19 February 1966, coming on as a first half substitute for Paul Madeley. Within minutes of taking the field Hibbitt scored a stunning goal, lobbing goalkeeper Peter Grummitt from 20 yards. For the next three years the talented left winger continued to show rich potential whenever given an opportunity by Don Revie, but he disappeared into the cul-de-sac of reserve team football after the talented Eddie Gray established himself as Revie‘s preferred choice on the left flank. A £30,000 transfer to Newcastle United in 1971 gave Hibbitt the chance of reviving his career, and he used the platform to give clear evidence of his prowess in a playmaking role. Hibbitt‘s younger brother Ken, born on 3 January 1951 and an England Under-23 cap, also enjoyed a long and successful professional career, mainly at Wolves (1968-84), with spells at Bradford Park Avenue, Seattle Sounders, Coventry City and Bristol Rovers. Frail of build and bandy of leg, Terry Hibbitt did not have a classic athlete‘s build, but he was an outstanding midfielder, playing cultured and intelligent football. He possessed a great range of passing skills and an instinctive feel for the through ball which benefited Malcolm Macdonald among others. Toon midfield colleague Terry McDermott: ―Hibby had a left foot that was like a magic wand.

  • Jimmy Spiers’ - Footballer
Jimmy Spiers’ - Footballer Bradford City's 1911 FA Cup winning team. Jimmy Speirs is seated in the centre of the middle row. James (Jimmy) Hamilton Speirs, born on 22 March 1886 at Govan, Glasgow, was the second son of James Hamilton Speirs, and Janet Shields Speirs (née McLean), His siblings were Margaret, Archibald, Annie, John and Robert, By 1901, the family had moved to nearby Govanhill, and Jimmy worked as a clerk. It was in Govanhill that his football ability was first shown, when he played in the junior football circuit on the ash pitches of Glasgow, for Annandale, during summer tournaments. An inside forward, he moved to Maryhill in the Glasgow Junior League in 1905. Maryhill, whose Lochburn Park ground was five miles north of his home, were among the top sides in the junior leagues, and lifted 13 trophies in eight seasons at the turn of the 20th century. The 1904–1905 team contained six junior internationals, and the side won three titles that season. Jimmy's first recorded scoring appearance was on 29 April 1905, when his two goals helped Maryhill beat Parkhead 2–0. Speirs scored again in a 3–3 draw against Ashfield in the Glasgow Junior Cup final, and scored the only goal of the replay to help Maryhill win the competition. Maryhill also won the Glasgow Merchants' Charity Cup. He moved to Glasgow Rangers in 1905, spending three years with the club, before joining Clyde. After one season, he left Clyde and Scotland during the summer of 1909, to head for Yorkshire and sign for Bradford City, under the management of his countryman Peter O'Rourke.
