BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Kenneth Allan Caldwell Elliott was born in Kimberly, South Africa, on August 24th, 1903. He attended Christian Brothers’ College, Kimberley (1909-1916), and St. Andrews College, Grahamstown (1917-1920). He attended Rhodes University College, South Africa (1921-1924), where he obtained a B.Sc. (1923) and M.Sc. (1924). From 1926 to 1933, Elliott studied at Selwyn College, Cambridge University, where he received a Ph.D. in 1930 and later a Sc.D. in 1950. From 1926 to 1933, Dr. Elliott did research in chemistry and biochemistry. In 1933, Dr. Elliott began his association with the University of Pennsylvania where he was engaged as a biochemist until 1939. The next five years were spent working on brain research at the Psychiatric Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital. Dr. Elliott’s employment at the Montreal Institute Neurological as a neurochemist began in 1944 and continued until 1965. He was also a professor (1958-1971) and chairman of the Biochemistry Department, at McGill University (1958-1968). In 1973, Dr. Elliott became Emeritus Professor of McGill University. Dr. Elliott died in Montreal on April 28, 1986. CUSTODIAL HISTORY: The fonds was transferred to the Osler Library from the Montreal Neurological Institute in 1986. This was part of accession 864. SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds illustrates Dr. Elliott’s work as a neurochemist and consists of correspondence, letters, articles, newspaper clippings, photographs, slides, research material and notes, course material, manuscripts, typescripts. The fonds is divided into seven (7) series: A) Research Notebooks, 1927-1957; B) GABA Studies, 1957; C) Correspondence – American, Canadian, British and South African associations of Scientific Workers, 1929-1982; D) Correspondence, 1944-1986; E) Teaching files, 1903-1982; F) Slides used for neurochemistry lectures, 193?-1963; G) Other visual items, 1920-1968. SOURCE OF SUPPLIED TITLE PROPER: Title based on the documents in the fonds. Some documents are in French. RESTRICTIONS: Access subject to approval of the executors. Please contact the Osler Library for details. FINDING AIDS: Inventory list available. RELATED GROUPS OF RECORDS: The Osler Library Archives also has material created by other members of the Montreal Neurological Institute, specifically Wilder Penfield (P142), William Vernon Cone (P163), and Francis Lothian McNaughton (P165). RETRIEVAL NUMBER: P164 SERIES A – RESEARCH NOTEBOOKS DATES: 1927-1957 EXTENT: 50 cm of textual records. – 17 photographs. SCOPE AND CONTENT: Series A contains Dr. Elliott’s research notebooks from his association with Selwyn College, Cambridge, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Montreal Neurological Institute. Some of this research was collaborative. Most of the series comprises research relating to the study of brain trauma as a result of head injury or neurosurgery. This series is divided into three (3) sub-series: A-1) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1927-1933; A-2) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1933-1949; A-3) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1944-1957; Sub-series A-1 contains experiment notebooks from the Chemistry Laboratory, Cambridge, concerning the study of stereochemistry. Of special relevance are the experiments pertaining to the optical activity caused by the restriction of the rotation of a trivalent nitrogen atom. It includes material produced at the Sir William Dunn Institute of Biochemistry related to oxidation reduction systems with particular relevance to the reduction of glutathione and the study of peroxidases in milk and horseradishes. This sub- series is comprised of 4 files (files no. 1 to 4), which are arranged chronologically. Sub-series A-2 contains experiment notebooks from the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, concerning the measurement of peroxidase activity of animal tissues, the activity of the “succinoxidase system” and the effects of redox indicator dyes on metabolism. Includes experiments related to the aerobic and anaerobic metabolism of glucose, lactate, pyruvate and succinate by slices of tumor tissues using manometric, analytical and isolation procedures. This sub-series comprises 29 files (files nos. 5 to 33), which are arranged chronologically. Osler Library of the History of Medicine, McGill University 4 Kenneth Allan Caldwell Elliott Fonds - P164 - Complete Inventory List Sub-series A-3 contains experiment notebooks from the Montreal Neurological Institute, concerning experiments on brain swelling as a result of head injury and neurosurgery. Brain slices were examined to determine the effect of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism of electrolytes, pH, oxygen tension, narcotics and convulsants. Of special relevance is the experiment measuring the acetylcholine (Ach) content of cat and rat brains. This sub-series is comprised of 14 files (files nos. 34 to 47), which are arranged chronologically. SOURCE OF SUPPLIED TITLE PROPER: Title based on the documents in the series.
