Cover by Peter Saville and Paul Hetherington. Design by Cathryn Ellis. For my first Festival as Artistic Director, I’ve followed the bold MIF formula of inviting around 30 of the world’s most extraordinary artists to come to Manchester and try things they’ve never tried before. We don’t set any rules about the themes they should address, nor about the venues where they should present their work. We simply invite them to come and amaze us – and from this invitation, a picture of the world emerges. Working in everything from classical music to digital technology, our artists come from cities as diverse as Berlin, Cairo, Karachi and New York. But we’ll also be celebrating Manchester: through local icons, from Friedrich Engels to New Order, and through events inspired by the city itself. We want everyone to feel part of MIF, whether by coming to an event (many are free), experiencing MIF online, visiting Festival Square or joining My Festival, our new creative community. I’d like to thank our generous partners and supporters, led by and Arts Council . My thanks also go to Matthias von Hartz, Mary Anne Hobbs, Michael Morris, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Peter Saville, MIF’s five visionary Artistic Advisors; and to the incredible MIF team, who work so hard to bring you these 18 extraordinary days. Artists help us to see new possibilities, and we need them now more than ever. We may be living through challenging times, but the Festival is also a moment to remember how much in our world is truly wonderful. I look forward to seeing you at MIF17 this summer.
