Abstract Perhaps surprisingly, one of the most popular Chinese movies of all time is actually an Indian film. Filmed in 1951 in newly independent India, Awaara (The Vagabond) was released in China after the official introduction of the opening and reform policies in 1979, when the country embarked on its current post- socialist, post-revolutionary course. Known as Liulangzhe in China, Awaara received a rapturous response from Chinese audiences and even now everyone over a certain age remembers watching the movie. Thanks to the Internet, many younger Chinese have also seen Awaara, sometimes dubbed in Chinese (I first saw it dubbed in Chinese myself), or if they haven’t seen it they can tell you why their parents and grandparents loved it so much. Enchantment of the Mind Preface
PREFACE 1 March 2004 marked the tenth anniversary of the death of Manmohan Desai. A fall from the terrace of his Khetwadi home brought the 57-year old filmmaker’s life to an end in the spring of 1994. The suspected suicide came as a shock both to those nearest to him and to the film world as a whole, as testified in countless articles and tributes in the Indian and international press in the month following his death. The articles that appeared spanned the gamut of reactions: praise for Desai as a man and as a filmmaker, heartfelt remembrances from those who had worked with him, indignation and disbelief over the circumstances of his death, and speculation over possible motives for suicide— depression over severe backaches being most frequently offered as an explanation. At that time, I could not help feeling a personal sadness over his death. I had, after all, spent the better part of four years studying Manmohan Desai’s work before completing an initial version of this book in 1987. It was, therefore, consoling to have immediate and direct evidence of Manmohan Desai’s work living on beyond his death, as happened one day in 1994 when I walked into an Indian carry-out restaurant in Paris and saw a colorful dance scene from Dharam-Veer playing on the conspicuously placed VCR. Those waiting in line stood transfixed before the screen, their faces radiating joy. Curious to know if Desai’s work had crossed the generations, I asked a young man in his twenties if he knew who had directed the film. -
Visualisation of Women in Media, Literature and Science -Dr
1 BARTERED BODIES VISUALISATION OF WOMEN IN MEDIA, LITERATURE AND SCIENCE -DR. KAMAYANI KUMAR Women’s bodies have since time immemorial served as a ‘site’ on which (metaphorically) war is fought and albeit conquest is sought. In this paper I seek to discuss the visualization of women in war literature. I will be looking at Rajwinder Singh Bedi’s story, Lajwanti and Guy de Maupassant’s Boile De Saufe. Prof. Rachel Bari Although Bedi’s short story does not respond to the generic classification of war literature yet it deals with a shared fate of women across borders and boundaries of time/ space that is stigmatization of Rape. Ironically, in war crimes which are an emanation of conflict pertaining to boundaries, rape emerges as the inevitable PRASARANGA insult thrust upon women irrespective of temporal, spatial, ethnic, nationalistic demarcations hence conforming that borders are mere “shadow lines” and that borders which serve to demarcate nations also serve to embroil and entwine nations. Violence done KUVEMPU UNIVERSITY against women’s bodies is as old as human civilizations, as Brownmiller states, “Violence, specifically rape against women, has been part of every documented war in history from the battles of Babylonia to the subjugation of Jewish women in World 2 War II”1 In fact, Biblical references depict women as “spoils of that inscribe the victories, defeats, and heroic battles that war” and there are various accounts of the rape of Sabine women primarily reflect men’s experiences of war. in Roman mythology. “The act of rape as a mechanism for “rewarding the troops” with “booty” has been a common feature Temporally/ spatially/ culturally the trajectory of this paper ranges from literary responses to the Franco Prussian war, in the representation of war.”2 Because soldiers of antiquity were frequently not paid regular wages, sanctioning the raping and Partition of Indian subcontinent in 1947against the theoretical pillaging of the enemy served as a way to motivate them to fight. -

Koel Chatterjee Phd Thesis
Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar. -

Intersemiotic Translation of Russian Classics for Foreign Audiences
Russian Journal of Linguistics 2019 Vol. 23 No. 2 399—414 Вестник РУДН. Серия: ЛИНГВИСТИКА http://journals.rudn.ru/linguistics DOI: 10.22363/2312-9182-2019-23-2-399-414 ∗ “A Sensible Image of the Infinite” : Intersemiotic Translation of Russian Classics for Foreign Audiences Olga Leontovich Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University 27 Lenin Prospect, Volgograd, 400066, Russia Tianjin Foreign Studies University No. 117, Machang Road, Hexi Disctrict, Tianjin, China Abstract The article is a continuation of the author’s cycle of works devoted to foreign cinematographic and stage adaptations of Russian classical literature for foreign audiences. The research material includes 17 American, European, Chinese, Indian, Japanese fiction films and TV series, one Broadway musical and 9 Russian films and TV series used for comparison. The paper analyses different theoretical approaches to intersemiotic translation, ‘de-centering of language’ as a modern tendency and intersemiotic translation of literary works in the context of intercultural communication. Key decisions about the interpretation of original texts are made by directors and their teams guided by at least three goals: commercial, creative and ideological. Intersemiotic translation makes use of such strategies as foreignization, domestication and universalization. The resignifying of a literary text by means of the cinematographic semiotic system is connected with such transformations as: a) reduction — omission of parts of the original; b) extension — addition, filling in the blanks, and signifying the unsaid; c) reinterpretation — modification or remodeling of the original in accordance with the director’s creative ideas. A challenge and at the same time one of the key points of intersemiotic translation is a difficult choice between the loyalty to the original, comprehensibility for the target audience and freedom of creativity.
