“If we are to move from a culture of war to a culture of peace then we will have to unite around the most fundamental issue that humanity faces – the protection of each other and our environment. 21 September is the starting point. Individuals can make a difference. Peace Day is about individuals coming together – it’s about reducing all forms of violence: in our homes, schools, places of work and local communities. I urge everyone to become involved. By working together there will be Peace One Day.”

5 6 Peace One Day Frequently Asked Questions

What is Peace One Day?

Peace One Day (POD) was created in 1998 by Jeremy Gilley, a British film maker. It is a non-profit organisation based in London dedicated to raising awareness worldwide of 21 September as an annual day of global ceasefire and non- violence (Peace Day). POD is non-political, dedicated to working with all sectors of society, with a track record of organising activities around the globe on Peace Day, 21 September. Peace One Day led the process that resulted in the UN member states unanimously adopting Peace Day as an annual day of ceasefire and non-violence on a fixed calendar date, 21 September.

“We are not the message; we are the messengers of other people’s action.”

Jeremy Gilley Founder of Peace One Day

What is Peace Day, 21 September?

Peace One Day led a campaign that resulted in the unanimous adoption by UN Member States of an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September - Peace Day. Peace One Day’s ultimate goal is to institutionalise the day around the world, engaging all sectors of society in its observance.

Notably, our campaign in Afghanistan led to wide-scale observance of the day, leading to a 70% reduction of violence on the Day and enabling health workers to vaccinate 1.5 million children as a result.

We estimate that in 2015 1.5 billion people globally were exposed to the message of Peace Day, with 709 million aware of the day. The results show that an estimated 13 million people behaved more peacefully as a consequence of Peace Day

Our key goals are:

• Through awareness of Peace Day 21 September, to see a significant growth in partnerships for a longer-lasting peace, with the participation of NGOs, individuals and intergovernmental organisations involved in education and ending domestic violence, as well as the corporate, faith and media sectors. • To see a significant increase in the number of people taking actions for peace in the Great Lakes region and globally on Peace Day, and a corresponding increase in life-saving and humanitarian activities. • By the use of documentary filmmaking, music and social media, to see a significant, measurable increase in media attention on the Great Lakes region, with particular focus on stories about individuals and groups that have embraced Peace Day towards creating a long lasting and sustainable peace.

8 Securing Media Coverage

There are a number of ways your organisation can try to secure media coverage for your Peace Day event or activities. This section provides a starting point to help you secure media coverage for your Peace Day event. There are a number of ways to do this.

Always remember to share the date of Peace Day, 21 September.

Two months prior to Peace Day

Research – Use Google, local knowledge and networking to create a media outreach list of the local and national media outlets in your country that cover stories like your Peace Day event. Think about your local television stations radio stations, daily and weekly newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, as well as blogs, journalists on Twitter and groups on LinkedIn.

Media outreach preparation – Once you know the contact details (email addresses and phone numbers) of those outlets on your media outreach list, finalise how you will approach them.

Create an event press release using the template provided by Peace One Day. When writing a press release, think about what might gain the attention of the media outlets, Do you have any VIPs attending the event? Are you attempting any World Records? Are a large number of people expected to attend? Will there be a great photo opportunity at the event? Is there a human-interest angle to your event?

Consider creating an event media invite also from the template provided. This approach is especially effective if your event is quite big and/or unusual. A media invite not only entices your media contacts into attending, but is also a concise way of communicating the key details of your event in one go.

Create a suite of three to five images you will send with your press release and event invite by downloading your favourite images from this Information Pack. Add a selection of images related specifically to your NGO; this will form the package you send to the media.

Commence media outreach – Choose a day to send via email your press release, media invite and images to your media outreach list. Avoid sending on Mondays and Fridays as these are the busiest days for media outlets and your email is likely to get missed or ignored on those days.

9 During and after Peace Day

Collect footage – hire or assign a photographer to take photographs and/or video footage of the event.

Send the best three to five images of the event along with a summary of what took place as soon as possible after the event to those media outlets that showed interest, especially if they requested images to be sent. Follow up the interested media outlets with phone calls but don’t be too pushy if they cannot include your event in their coverage.

Expert Tips It is important to have your organisation’s social media channels up to date with event and other information as some media outlets may research you before taking up the story. If you have some money available, it is a good idea to explore the possibility of engaging a PR company or putting some money behind a press release promoting it to the media via a newswire.

GOOD LUCK!
