Architecture for Collegiate Recreation SUNY Cortland

Student Life Center, Cortland, NY SUNY Cortland's new Student Life Center, designed by Hastings+Chivetta in association with H2L2, houses recreation as well as dining, social and meeting spaces. The two story building is organized in two wings with a common lobby and entrances on both sides. Access to the second level is provided via a monumental stair. A fitness mezzanine overlooks the weight room, and an extended walking/jogging track wraps the perimeter of the facility. A two-story climbing wall is located at the termination of the main concourse which runs north-south and connects directly to the two-level fitness center, pool, gymnasia and multi-purpose spaces. of Utah

George S. Eccles Student Life Center, Salt Lake City, UT After a 2004 feasibility study conducted by Hastings+Chivetta showed that 66% of students agreed that a recreation center would create a perfect hub for the campus, H+C in association with MHTN Architects was selected to desgin the new center. The new facility features a natatorium with lap pool, leisure pool and whirlpool. The two-level fitness center is surrounded by a multimedia theater. Other spaces include a three-court gym with a suspended track, two-court auxiliary gym, a climbing wall, exercise rooms, locker rooms and offices. The center also houses lounge areas with flat screen televisions, a juice bar, computer stations, and a classroom for student/staff training and student organization meetings. Temple University

Pearson and McGonigle Halls, Addition and Renovation, Philadelphia, PA The renovation of Pearson and McGonigle Halls joined two adjacent sports and recreation facilities and transformed their concrete facades with vibrant expanses of glass wrapping the front of both buildings. Designers developed a creative solution to the site’s urban constraints: a two-story upper level constructed across the top of the two buildings. This new level provides regulation practice courts for both Temple’s men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as the teams' support areas. A new three-story atrium lobby connects the two buildings and contains a large café and lounge, academic advising space and control desk. University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Las Vegas, NV UNLV selected Hastings+Chivetta to design a facility that would meet students' needs while being mindful of the limited space available at the selected site. Hastings+Chivetta's solution is a four-level center with recreational activities on all four floors, including a massive cardio space, four-court gymnasium with a suspended track, two-court multipurpose gym, spinning room, fitness mezzanine with weight training equipment that overlooks the cardio floor, group exercise rooms, racquetball courts, climbing wall, locker rooms and offices. Aquatics include an indoor competition pool, leisure pool, whirlpool and wet classroom, and an outdoor pool and spa. University of North Carolina

Student Recreation Center, Wilmington, NC Recreation components for UNCW's expanded and renovated recreation center include a gymnasium with a suspended track, multi-activity courts with retractable spectator bleachers, cardio/weight equipment areas, three racquetball courts, three multipurpose rooms and locker rooms. Because the University offers numerous opportunities in outdoor leisure pursuits, the expansion includes the new Discovery Outdoors Center with reception, a resource library, meeting rooms, a catering kitchen and almost 2,500 SF of oversized storage for equipment. Other spaces include a 1,600 SF dividable meeting room, intramurals/sports clubs offices, a student lounge with vending, and storage. Colorado State University

Student Recreation Center, Fort Collins, CO Colorado State University wanted to transform their Student Recreation Center into a state-of-the-art facility with the latest in fitness, health and wellness. Rather than copy existing architectural characteristics, CSU chose Hastings+Chivetta to create a design that reflects its dynamic, updated strategic plan. The renovated building retains its original bold interior colors but includes more windows for natural light. The two-story lobby concourse allows access to all services, including a climbing wall, fitness center, two multipurpose courts, meeting rooms and administrative offices. The project has received LEED Gold Certification.

Lilly Center Renovation & Expansion, Greencastle, IN In the first of a three-phase project, Hastings+Chivetta expanded and renovated the 140,000 SF Lilly Center to address the University’s top priorities related to fitness, training facilities and recreational programming. The new facility includes a 16,000 SF fitness center, three new multipurpose rooms to support fitness, spinning and dance, remodeled locker rooms and administrative office space. The natatorium roof was replaced and raised, enabling the existing natatorium to be converted into a practice gymnasium as part of future improvements. The most noticeable change is the addition of a lobby to the front of the existing building to align the building with the walkway and create a prominent campus front. Virginia Commonwealth U

Cary Street Gym, Richmond, VA Hastings+Chivetta teamed with Moseley Architects to design this renovation of the existing Cary Street Gym, built in 1891. The existing exterior was restored, while a new addition carefully responds both to the historic building and other buildings on campus. The interior of the facility is designed to provide spaces for a wide range of social, recreational and fitness activities including weight and fitness rooms, a climbing wall, a recreational gym with elevated track, spinning room, two racquetball courts, a multi-use athletic court, natatorium with lap pools and a leisure pool, locker facilities, offices, and an outdoor activities area. Georgia Institute of Technology

Campus Recreation Center, Atlanta, GA Georgia Institute of Technology was chosen to house the aquatic competition venue for the 1996 Summer Olympics. After performing a feasibility study and master plan, Hastings+Chivetta created an adaptive reuse design that transformed the single-use facility into a multipurpose recreation resource. The new Campus Recreation Center includes 50-meter competition pool, diving tank, leisure pool, six-court gym, multipurpose gym, suspended track, fitness center, four racquetball courts, squash court, climbing wall, lounge, game room, group exercise space, concessions, meeting rooms and offices. .

After entering through control, a three-court recreation gym with an elevated track is to the left, and to the right is the natatorium with an outdoor sun deck. Also adjacent to the lobby is a large fitness center with cardio and weights. Other components include racquetball courts, multipurpose rooms, a wellness lab, a lounge, a game room and a classroom.
