The epistle appointed for the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost is the beginning of the epistle of Saint Paul to the Church in Galatia, an area in central Asia Minor, modern Turkey. This epistle is also read on the Sunday after Christmas because of the reference to the apostle, James, who is commemorated along with the other human relatives of Jesus on that Sunday. Here is it part of the lectio continua or continuous reading of the epistles that began after Pentecost with the reading of the epistle to the Romans and continued through 1st and 2nd Corinthians Certain Judaizing legalists had come to Galatia teaching that Christians had to observe the Old Testament Law and spoke against Saint Paul, denying that he was an apostle, not equal to the Twelve Apostles. In the epistle, Saint Paul The Order for the Divine Liturgy explains that the Lord Jesus has fulfilled the Old Testament. The Old Testament functioned the way a guardian does for a minor until the minor comes to adulthood. To go back to observing the diet and purity laws of the Old for Testament is like denying that Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection had any effect for the human race. Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

In the part of the epistle proclaimed today, Saint Paul is writing to the Galatians to reassure them that he did not invent the gospel, nor did he hear it from someone who invented it. The gospel he preaches is the same gospel that the Twelve Apostles preach, and it comes from the same source, God, who revealed the content of the gospel to them and to him. He then tells them that he couldn’t have invented the gospel since he had tried to destroy Christ’s Church. Only really seeing and hearing the risen Lord Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus as he was going to PLACE RIBBONS AT: arrest Christians converted him to be a disciple of Christ who gave Paul the vocation as apostle. He writes that he did not get the gospel from any other apostle because he never met or spoke with them. This is Paul’s testimony that the way he learned of the gospel was from Christ Himself. Paul’s testimony is a comforting one since it shows that no one is too bad to not be evangelized. His testimony also gives two of the qualities the Church believes for someone be an apostle— (1) Taught and called by Jesus and (2) a witness who saw the resurrected Christ. BLUE p. 11 Mark and Follow Ordinary Parts of the Divine Liturgy

The complete content of the gospel as it has been transmitted from the apostles to our time is either from God or GREEN p. 135 Resurrection Tone 3 from humans, supernatural or man-made, true or false. A person either believes Saint Paul and the apostles are truthful or not. We believe he is telling the truth. Having him speak to us strengthens our faith and recommits us to putting it all into practice. Jesus and the apostles have just completed the crossing of the Sea of Galilee and survived a storm which was so strong that the boat was filling with water although Jesus was asleep. After the apostles wakened Him, He IŽE CHERUVIMY – LET US WHO MYSTICALLY calms the storm. The apostles are filled with fear and say, “Who, then, is this who commands even the wind and the sea, and they obey Him?” Saint Theophylact of Bulgaria in his scriptural commentary on the gospel Iže Cheruvimy tajno obrazujušče, i životvorjasščej Trojc’i trisvjatuju p’isň prinosjasšče, vsjakuju nyňi of Saint Luke writes that the apostles receive the answer to their question from a fearsome source, the demons zitejskoje otveržim pečal’. who possess a man who meets them on the shore. For, when they make land, they are met by a possessed man Amiň. Jako da Carja vs’ich podimem, anhel’skimi nevidimo dorinosima činmi. Alliluia. Alliluia. Alliluia. and the demons who possess him cry out, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” There is the answer. SVJAT, SVJAT, SVJAT – HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Even devils recognize that Jesus is God and man but that does not make them citizens of heaven. Jesus taught, Svjat, svjat, svjat, Hospod’ savaoth, ispolň nebo i zeml’a slavy Tvojeja: osanna vo vyšnich, blahosloven “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the hrjadyj vo imja Hospodne, osanna vo vyšnich. will of my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21). That is the first truth. The second is that devils are not the evil equivalent of God, like the ancient dualism that appears in a modern form in Star Wars. They have to ask TEBE POJEM – WE PRAISE YOU permission to enter the pigs. When assailed by evil thoughts or temptations we must turn to God who is stronger than evil. Tebe pojem, Tebe blahoslovim, Teb’i blahodarim, Hospodi, i molimtisja Bože naš. As stewards of the earth we wonder why Jesus would permit the destruction of so many animals. While all DOSTOJNO JEST’ – IT IS TRULY PROPER life is important, the truth God reveals is human life is most important because humans are made in the image

Dostojno jest’ jako voistinnu blažiti t’a bohorodicu, prisnoblaženuju i preneporočnuju i Mater’ Boha našeho. of God. What happened reveals the providential care of God, for without God’s protection the possessed man Česňijšuju Cheruvim i slavňišuju bez sravnenija Serafim, bez istl’inija Boha Slova roždšuju, suščuju and many of the inhabitants would have come to a terrible end long before the arrival of Jesus. Of course, the Bohorodicu, t’a veličajem. Law of Moses did not permit the consumption of pork so this loss teaches the lesson through economic loss of the spiritual loss of humans, who, after all, are made in God’s image, do not live in God’s likeness by OTČE NAŠ – OUR FATHER observing His commands for God-like living. Of course, now that Jesus has come and completely fulfilled the Otče naš, iže jesi na nebes’ich, da svjatitsja imja Tvoje. Da prijdet carstvije Tvoje, da budet vol’a Tvoja, jako Law of Moses, the dietary laws that were a guardian of the People of God until God came to earth no longer na nebesi, i na zemli. Chl’ib naš nasuščnyj dažd nam dnes’. I ostavi nam dolhi naša, jakože I my ostavl’ajem bind. dolžnikom našim. I ne vvedi nas vo iskušenije, no izbavi nas ot lukavaho. The final question is, how did the townspeople live with such evil in their proximity? The reaction of the people to the restoration of the man through the exorcism is barely noticed. Instead, everyone reacts to the VID’ICHOM SVIT ISTINNYJ – WE HAVE SEEN THE TRUE LIGHT loss of pigs. Anxious to protect whatever else they might have from the power of Jesus, the townspeople drive

Vid’ichom svit istinnyj, i prijachom Ducha nebesnaho, obr’itochom v’iru istinnuju, nerazd’ilnij Svjat’ij Trojc’i Jesus out instead. Such a crisis of choice exists with people of all times and every place. We cannot get poklanjajemsja, T’a bo nas spasla jest’. comfortable with co-existence with evil for God will not co-exist with evil. He will leave.

The man is left behind. Catholic and Orthodox Christians are made Christians at baptism which is preceded by the rite of exorcism. Then, each time they approach the Sacrament of Repentance, the Lord Jesus drives sin from them. They are then sent back to where they live as a witness of the loving power of God.

“…the gospel preached by me is not of human invention…it came by revelation of Jesus Christ.” Galatians 1:11-12
