This research was supported in part by a grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. REPORTING HEALTH 3 Abstract While the prevalence of health reporting in larger newspapers is well established, little research has been dedicated to rural newspapers. Rural newspapers may, however, be more influential than their urban counterparts and may be able to play key role in improving health literacy among a demographic that often suffers from low health literacy levels. While the relationship between media coverage of health issues and health literacy has not been clearly defined, research suggests that media coverage does play some role in health literacy and may be a contributing factor in higher health literacy levels. In order to understand how reporting in rural Kentucky newspapers could play a role in improving health literacy, this study presents a descriptive analysis of health news coverage in rural newspapers in Kentucky.     4 MONROE COUNTY CITIZEN SEPTEMBER 4, 2019 Throw like a girl By JEFF JOBE [email protected] Publisher As I climbed into the dunking tank for what is quiet possible the last time; I im- mediately had three young boys lining up to take their turn at drowning me. The boys were probably between the ages of nine and eleven and I have known them from the restaurant and brewery I own and spend weekends. They are a handful and as a father of three children it is impossible for me not to speak with children. I honestly find myself chatting with kids more than the parents and I’m told many of them like coming because I do. I try to be a friend of the family, direct the boys into well behavior and actually believe the attention of adults in positive ways is good for children. They react well and in turn it helps fill a void for this empty nester dad. These three reminded me of my son. They are the epitome of the phrase “hard headed boy”. KyCIR works with 89.3 WFPL News and other news part- ners across the region to produce original reporting in the public interest. A member of the Investigative News Network, we produce journalism that affects you, your neighborhood and your commonwealth. Our mission is to protect society’s most vulnerable citizens, expose wrongdoing in the public and private sectors, increase transparency in government and hold leaders accountable, all in accordance with jour- nalism’s highest standards. Many newsrooms today are facing difficult choices. Some are shrinking staff and cutting back on investigative reporting, which takes precious time and resources. But at KyCIR, we believe this in-depth reporting is not a luxury, but a ne- cessity. We produce deeply researched journalism that shines a light on major problems in our city and state and spurs solutions. We are members of the community.
