News from St Andrew’s — LENT—Lent starts on Ash Wednesday (6 March) and, whenever people ask me what I’m giving up for Lent, my favorite reply is “Oh, same as last year—paragliding, potholing and crocodile wrangling!” It makes people smile, but it also raises an important point. Christians have traditionally given up something for Lent as a reminder of two things: firstly, that Jesus fasted and was tested in the wilderness for forty days (Matthew 4:1-11) and secondly, that He also was willing to give up his life on the cross, in order to redeem us and bring us into new relationship with God the Father. My humorous response makes clear that I’ve chosen things that are easy to give up. But Jesus opted to take the hard path, so that we might experience that joy of eternal life. We’ll be reflecting on that at St Andrew’s during Lent—do feel free to join us. May God’s blessing rest upon you.
