  • The Musical and Personal Biographies of Adolescents with Foster Care Experience
    Qualitative Inquiries in Music Therapy 2012, Volume 7, pp. 71–109 Barcelona Publishers THE MUSICAL AND PERSONAL BIOGRAPHIES OF ADOLESCENTS WITH FOSTER CARE EXPERIENCE Michael L. Zanders, PhD, MT-BC, LPC ABSTRACT This qualitative biographical inquiry examined the personal and musical lives of adolescents with foster care experience. Individual structured interviews were conducted with 10 participants (six males, four females) who were enrolled in outpatient therapy. Results indicated that foster care experiences had various impacts upon these adolescents’ relationships to music. For example, their involvement in active music- making activities tended to decrease as they moved from one placement to another. Music also appeared to influence these adolescents’ experiences of foster care. Participants who described positive or healthy relationships with their foster care families tended to be more involved in formal and active music-making activities such as school music programs, participation in music groups, or taking music lessons. Finally, all participants indicated that they spent a significant amount of time listening to music and that they did so for personal and psychological reasons. Music listening helped these adolescents to cope with the ongoing trauma, grief, and loss that they encountered throughout their lives. Implications for music therapy practice, research, and theory are presented. INTRODUCTION This qualitative study was conceived as a result of experiences I had as a music therapist when working with children and adolescents who were or had been in foster care. I began working with this population approximately 8 years ago, and my initial encounters were eye-opening. These individuals came from severely abusive homes, and many had suffered the loss of their biological or adoptive families.

    ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.
