The Musical and Personal Biographies of Adolescents with Foster Care Experience
Qualitative Inquiries in Music Therapy 2012, Volume 7, pp. 71–109 Barcelona Publishers THE MUSICAL AND PERSONAL BIOGRAPHIES OF ADOLESCENTS WITH FOSTER CARE EXPERIENCE Michael L. Zanders, PhD, MT-BC, LPC ABSTRACT This qualitative biographical inquiry examined the personal and musical lives of adolescents with foster care experience. Individual structured interviews were conducted with 10 participants (six males, four females) who were enrolled in outpatient therapy. Results indicated that foster care experiences had various impacts upon these adolescents’ relationships to music. For example, their involvement in active music- making activities tended to decrease as they moved from one placement to another. Music also appeared to influence these adolescents’ experiences of foster care. Participants who described positive or healthy relationships with their foster care families tended to be more involved in formal and active music-making activities such as school music programs, participation in music groups, or taking music lessons. Finally, all participants indicated that they spent a significant amount of time listening to music and that they did so for personal and psychological reasons. Music listening helped these adolescents to cope with the ongoing trauma, grief, and loss that they encountered throughout their lives. Implications for music therapy practice, research, and theory are presented. INTRODUCTION This qualitative study was conceived as a result of experiences I had as a music therapist when working with children and adolescents who were or had been in foster care. I began working with this population approximately 8 years ago, and my initial encounters were eye-opening. These individuals came from severely abusive homes, and many had suffered the loss of their biological or adoptive families. -

How Avid Fans Determine and Value Authenticity in Rap Music
THE RELEVANCE OF REAL: HOW AVID FANS DETERMINE AND VALUE AUTHENTICITY IN RAP MUSIC _______________ A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Sociology University of Houston _______________ In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Master’s Degree _______________ By Erian J. Aquil May 2018 THE RELEVANCE OF REAL: HOW AVID FANS DETERMINE AND VALUE AUTHENTICITY IN RAP MUSIC _______________ An Abstract of a Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Sociology University of Houston _______________ In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Master’s Degree _______________ By Erian J. Aquil May 2018 ABSTRACT Authenticity in rap music holds historical importance in hip hop culture. Low-income blacks in New York City used rap music to express their feelings about and bring awareness to issues in their communities. Rap music is no longer as closely tied to its origins, but authenticity remains a valuable part of these expressions. Though researchers acknowledge rap music has changed, they use historical markers to identify what is authentic in rap music and rarely investigate how fans understand authenticity today. In-depth interviews with eighteen avid rap fans illustrate new ways fans determine authenticity in rap music. Borrowing from Swidler’s (1986) “cultural tool kit,” this study shows how fans draw from their personal toolkits to determine authenticity. Specifically, fans determine authenticity based on whether they believe an artist is telling stories about personal lived experiences, whether they can relate to an artist’s lyrics, and/or whether an artist shows vulnerability in some way. Conversely, fans consider lyrics inauthentic when a rapper tells exaggerated stories that do not seem plausible. -
Hip Hop As Cultural Capital: Remixing Bourdieu's Theory to Affirm Cultural Wealth
Language, Literature, and Interdisciplinary Studies (LLIDS) ISSN: 2547-0044 http://ellids.com/archives/2019/03/2.3-Turner.pdf CC Attribution-No Derivatives 4.0 International License http://ellids.com/ Hip Hop as Cultural Capital: Remixing Bourdieu's Theory to Affirm Cultural Wealth Milanika Turner Hierarchical societies reproduce themselves through cultural resources that generate social value. The values attached to these so- cial and cultural resources are determined from the top social strata and then disseminated throughout society via mediums like education. Pitched as a supplement to mainstream pedagogy, hip-hop based edu- cation (HHBE) uses rap songs and lyrics as curricular resources to teach a variety of disciplines. HHBE has been inserted into teaching practice since the 1990s to enhance English language arts analyses (Hall 343; Morrell and Duncan-Andrade 89) in addition to providing context and relevancy for humanities and social science curricula (Stovall 587). However, the pedagogical potential of HHBE has thus far used hip hop lyrics as an accessory to reinforce the transmission of dominant social values through education instead of utilizing the in- herent value of hip hop as its own form of social and cultural capital. Applying Yosso’s conceptualization of community cultural wealth to rap music provides evidence of the social value of hip hop for educa- tion and broader society even after decades of negative characteriza- tions of the genre. Despite its popularity in the United States of America, hip hop culture is misunderstood by many. The popular discourse on rap music is unjustly negative. Throughout history black popular music has been blamed for the propagation of a number of social ills including the de- terioration of families, urban decline, and juvenile delinquency.
