The DAVID SANBORN Anthology im Auftrag: medienAgentur Stefan Michel T 040-5149 1467 F 040-5149 1465 [email protected] Then Again: The DAVID SANBORN Anthology Er gilt als einer der smoothesten Saxophonisten der Welt und ist definitiv einer der erfolgreichsten Crossover- Instrumentalisten, die mit traumwandlerischer Sicherheit und großer Eleganz die Grenzen zwischen Jazz, R&B und Pop verschwimmen lassen: DAVID SANBORN. Sein Altsaxophon spielt er, als wäre es seine Stimme, und sein unverkennbar eigener Ton bescherte ihm bis heute sechs Grammys® und neun Alben, die mit Gold oder Platin ausgezeichnet wurden. 1975 veröffentlichte der 1945 in Tampa, Florida, geborene SANBORN sein erstes Soloalbum, und mit Then Again: The DAVID SANBORN Anthology erinnern Rhino Records nun an die ersten beiden Dekaden seines außergewöhnlichen Schaffens. Auf zwei CDs, die mit insgesamt 29 Songs angefüllt sind, lässt das Doppelalbum die fruchtbare Evolution, die der Virtuose von den Mitt-Siebzigern bis in die Mitt-Neunziger durchgegangen ist, Revue passieren. Wie kaum einem Zweiten gelang es ihm, unterschiedlichste Genres zu einem homogenen Ganzen zusammenzubringen. „Der kleinste gemeinsame Nenner ist die Integrität des Songs“, so schreibt David Ritz in seinen Liner-Notes, und beschreibt damit exakt das große Talent und das musikalische Hauptanliegen SANBORNs. CD1 präsentiert die bedeutendsten Kompositionen des Saxophonisten in chronologischer Reihenfolge. Beginnend mit The Whisperer aus seinem Debüt Taking Off reicht die Spanne auf der ersten Disc bis zum 1996 auf Songs From The Night Before erschienenen Missing You. Wichtige Stationen auf diesem Weg waren Songs wie The Dream und der mit einem Grammy® ausgezeichnete Chicago Song, die beide aus dem 1987 veröffentlichten Album A Change Of Heart stammen, das in diesem Jahr sein 25. Jubiläum feiern kann. Auf CD2 hat DAVID SANBORN auf die Chronologie verzichtet und stattdessen eine Reihenfolge erarbeitet, die manche der bekannten Songs in einem ganz neuen Licht erscheinen lassen. So findet man das exquisite Kammer- Stück Lotus Blossom aus dem 1978er Album Heart To Heart neben The Water Is Wide, das 1995 auf Love Songs erschien und die wunderbare Linda Ronstadt als Gastsängerin zu Einsatz kommen lässt. Never Enough ist zudem einer von vier Songs, die aus dem Album Double Vision kommen, das SANBORN im Jahr 1986 zusammen mit Keyboarder und Arrangeur Bob James aufgenommen hat. Zum runden Abschluss kommt die sorgsam zusammengestellte Compilation mit Anywhere I Wander, ein Standard, von dem SANBORN bereits in seiner Jugend fasziniert war, die er in St. Louis verbrachte. Nachdem er den Song von Danny Kaye im Film Hans Christian Andersen gesungen hörte, beschloss er, eine eigene Version einzuspielen. „Die Melodie verfolgt mich immer noch“, so schreibt in den Liner-Notes. DAVID SANBORN erkrankte als Dreijähriger an Kinderlähmung und begann als Therapie, Saxophon zu spielen. Er wuchs in St. Louis auf und stand maßgeblich unter dem Einfluss der Chicago-Blues-Musiker, die den Grundstein für sein tiefes musikalisches Verständnis legten. Schon in jungen Jahren spielte er mit Größen wie Albert King und Little Milton zusammen, stieg 1971 in Paul Butterfields Butterfield Blues Band ein und arbeitete unter anderem auch für Stevie Wonder. In den folgenden Jahren konnte man ihn zusammen mit Gil Evans, Al Jarreau, den Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, David Bowie und Miles Davis zusammen hören - auch Nena engagierte ihn für einige Aufnahmen.
