  • Kluber, 12-Run Outburst Help Tribe Beat Royals by Jeffrey Flanagan
Kluber, 12-run outburst help Tribe beat Royals By Jeffrey Flanagan and August Fagerstrom / MLB.com | July 29th, 2015 + 97 COMMENTS CLEVELAND -- The Indians unleashed a week of pent-up offensive frustration upon the Kansas City Royals with a season-high 18 hits and four home runs in a 12-1 win on Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field. The outburst could also be viewed as a release stemming from an inability to score with Corey Kluber on the mound this season. Kluber entered the contest receiving a Major League-low 2.41 runs per game. Wednesday was just the fourth time in 22 starts that Kluber received more than four runs of support. He more than did his part, too, holding the Royals to a ninth-inning run in his second complete game of the season and the fifth of his career. He struck out six and walked one, allowing just five hits. "Some of their guys wanted to have early contact, some guys were a little more patient, and it didn't really seem like it mattered," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "He had something for everything. He kept the ball on the ground. He was really in control." Jeremy Guthrie's season-long struggles on the mound continued, as he allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits, a walk and three home runs in 5 1/3 innings. Following the recent acquisition of Johnny Cueto, one of the Royals' current starters will lose their spot in the rotation, with the roles of Guthrie and Chris Young in question.

Schwab, who was the Reds' park superintendent from 1903-63, will be the recipient of the Gary Vanden Berg Award as the 2017 inductee into the Major League Baseball Groundskeeper's Hall of Fame. There will be a ceremony this weekend in Clearwater, Fla., during the annual meeting of the groundskeepers from all 30 clubs in MLB. The Schwab family name is practically groundskeeper royalty. Schwab began working on the fields at Reds ballparks in 1894 under the supervision of his father, John. Matty took over in 1903 and oversaw the installation of the field when the Reds moved to Redland Field, later renamed Crosley Field. Members of the Schwab family worked other MLB ballparks, including his son Matthew, who was park superintendent at Ebbets Field, the Polo Grounds and San Francisco's Candlestick Park, and grandson Mike Dolan, who succeeded Mr.

Tribe makes out well in Moss-Kaminsky swap By Jim Callis / MLB.com | @JimCallisMLB | July 30th, 2015 + 23 COMMENTS With two regulars (Matt Adams and Jon Jay) already on the disabled list and a third (Matt Holliday) reinjuring his right quadriceps Wednesday night, the Cardinals decided to bolster their offense by acquiring Brandon Moss from the Indians on Thursday morning. But the price that St. Louis paid, lefty pitching prospect Rob Kaminsky, is a steep one for a club in its position. The Cardinals have the best record in baseball, and they're almost certainly going to make the playoffs, even if Holliday is sidelined for a while. In the 31-year-old Moss, St. Louis is getting a one-tool player who can hit for power, but provides negative value in terms of on-base percentage and defensive ability as a first baseman and corner outfielder. Moss' 15 homers are more than anyone on the Cards' roster, but he's hit .217/.288/.407 in 94 games -- among the lowest numbers of his Major League career. Moss is not just a half-season rental, however, as he is eligible for arbitration one more time this offseason. Getting Moss at the cost of Kaminsky seems like an overpay. The Cardinals shouldn't have had to surrender the No. 88 player on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Prospects list for Moss. If they were willing to part with Kaminsky, they should have been able to get a better bat. Kaminsky, 20, was the 28th overall pick in the 2013 Draft out of St.

The moves protected them from exposure to next month's Rule 5 Draft. Cleveland selected the contracts of right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger and outfielders James Ramsey and Naquin from Triple-A Columbus; left-handed pitcher Shawn Morimando from Double-A Akron and right-handed pitcher Dylan Baker from Class A Advanced Lynchburg. To clear a spot on the roster, the contract of right-handed pitcher C.C. Lee was sold to the Seibu Lions in Japan. The Rule 5 Draft allows teams to pluck unprotected players from other organizations. Eligible players include those who signed before turning 19 years old and have been in an organization for five years, or older signees who have been in an organization for four years. Clubs pay $50,000 to select a player in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. If that player doesn't stay on the 25-man roster for the full season, he must be offered back to his former team for $25,000. This year's Rule 5 Draft is scheduled for Dec. 10 in Nashville, Tenn., at the conclusion of the annual Winter Meetings. Among the Top 30 prospects in the Indians' system, left-handed pitcher Luis Lugo (No. 18), outfielder Luigi Rodriguez (No. 22) and second baseman Claudio Bautista (No. 24) could be selected in the Draft. Also exposed are right-handed pitchers Jeff Johnson (1.05 ERA, 56 strikeouts, 27 saves in 51 1/3 innings at Double-A); Josh Martin (2.27 ERA, 80 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings at Double-A); Enosil Tejeda (1.25 ERA in 43 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A) and infielder Ronny Rodriguez (.806 OPS at Double-A).
