At Cal Performances, we’re proud of our place at the heart of one of the world’s finest public universities. Each season, we strive to honor the same spirit of curiosity that fuels the work of this remarkable center of learning—of its teachers, researchers, and students. That’s why I’m happy to present the details of our 2020/21 Season, an endlessly diverse collection of performances rivaling any program, on any stage, on the planet. Here you’ll find legendary artists and companies like cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the Mark Morris Dance Group, pianist Mitsuko Uchida, and singer/songwriter Angélique Kidjo. And you’ll discover a wide range of performers you might not yet know you can’t live without—extraordinary, less-familiar talent just now emerging on the international scene. This season, we are especially proud to introduce our new Illuminations series, which aims to harness the power of the arts to address the pressing issues of our time and amplify them by shining a light on developments taking place elsewhere on the Berkeley campus. Through the themes of Music and the Mind and Fact or Fiction (please see the following pages for details), we’ll examine current groundbreaking work in the university’s classrooms and laboratories. -

Issue 116 JULY 27TH, 2020 “Baby, there’s only two more days till tomorrow.” That’s from the Gary Wilson song, “I Wanna Take You On A Sea Cruise.” Gary, an outsider music legend, expresses what many of us are feeling these days. How many conversations have you had lately with people who ask, “what day is it?” How many times have you had to check, regardless of how busy or bored you are? Right now, I can’t tell you what the date is without looking at my Doug the Pug calendar. (I am quite aware of that big “Copper 116” note scrawled in the July 27 box though.) My sense of time has shifted and I know I’m not alone. It’s part of the new reality and an aspect maybe few of us would have foreseen. Well, as my friend Ed likes to say, “things change with time.” Except for the fact that every moment is precious. In this issue: Larry Schenbeck finds comfort and adventure in his music collection. John Seetoo concludes his interview with John Grado of Grado Labs. WL Woodward tells us about Memphis guitar legend Travis Wammack. Tom Gibbs finds solid hits from Sophia Portanet, Margo Price, Gerald Clayton and Gillian Welch. Anne E. INCONCERT 23 TONIGHT’S CONCERT AT A GLANCE MICHAEL TORKE Adjustable Wrench • Michael Torke emerged on the new music scene in the 1980s with a style that combines elements of Minimalism, jazz and popular music. Adjustable Wrench dates from 1987 and comes from a body of work that reflects an array of influences ranging from Bartók and Philip Glass to Chaka Khan and the Talking Heads. • Torke originally composed this piece for a chamber ensemble of 15 players divided into three groups, each comprised of four instruments paired with a keyboard instrument: woodwinds with piano, brass with marimba, and strings with a synthesizer. The composer however, adapted the score to make it suitable for an orchestra by allowing the string parts to be performed by multiple musicians. -

INCONCERT 33 TONIGHT’S CONCERT AT A GLANCE AARON JAY KERNIS Symphony No. 4, “Chromelodeon” • New York City-based composer Kernis has earned the Pulitzer Prize in Music and the prestigious Grawemeyer Award, as well a 2019 GRAMMY® nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. (Winners had not yet been announced at the time of the program guide’s printing.) He also serves as workshop director for the Nashville Symphony’s Composer Lab & Workshop. • The title of his latest symphony, “Chromelodeon,” comes from an unusual word previously used by maverick American composer Harry Partch to describe one of his musical inventions. As defined by the composer, this word aptly describes his own creation here: “chromatic, colorful, melodic music performed by an orchestra.” • The idea of color is especially significant in Kernis’ work, as the composer has synesthesia, a condition that associates specific notes and chords and with distinct colors. -
