Research Justification The aim of this book is to provide a way to do justice to an African language of faith. In systematic theology, anthropology and philosophy of religion, similar debates about how to interpret an African language of faith are ongoing. Trying to avoid the ‘othering’ discourses of past generations, scholars are careful to take seriously what people in Africa say without portraying people’s beliefs as weird or backward. Yet, in their desperate attempts to avoid othering, these theologians, anthropologists and philosophers often painfully misconstrue a language of faith in Africa. Understanding the language of faith in Southern Africa is not an easy task. How should we take seriously the form of language that often seems so strange and different? Two schools of interpreting the African language of faith can be found in theology, anthropology and philosophy alike. On the one hand there are ‘critical realists’, who interpret references to the spirit world etc. as metaphors, and on the other hand there are ‘postmodernists’, who interpret these references as straightforwardly describing the reality in which people in Africa live. These two schools are both mistaken in interpreting African references to the spirit world as descriptions of the world. Proper attention to how this language is used shows that references to the spirit world are in fact responses to the world. I demonstrate this using the descriptive parts of African theology, anthropology and my personal experiences in Zambia as source material, and applying to it a Wittgensteinian philosophy of language which pays special attention to the meaning of a language of faith as it is constituted in peoples’ day-to-day lives. I argue that, after African inculturation theology and black liberation theology, a better way to make sense of being a Christian in Southern Africa is to pay close attention to people’s language of faith. The way in which people speak of the spirit world or powers in Africa appears strange to outsiders, and the sense of community and the holistic worldview differentiates the African way of life from its Euro-American counterparts. I show that when proper attention is paid to the use of concepts like spirit world, power, community and holism, language of faith in Southern Africa is neither as strange as it may seem, nor as romantic. By investigating these distinguishing concepts that colour language of faith in Southern Africa, this book contributes to future projects of both fellow theologians who try to construct a contemporary African theology and those who are interested in theology in Africa given the well-known southward shift of the centre of gravity of Christianity. These theologians are the primary target audience of this book. The questions I raise about the nature of faith in the twenty-first century, however, also have implications for wider discussions within systematic theology, anthropology of Africa and philosophy of religion. Randy Weston was not the first musician to do so, however he was chosen for this thesis because his experiences, influences, and music clearly demonstrate the importance traditional African culture has played in his life. Randy Weston was born during the Harlem Renaissance. His parents, who lived in Brooklyn at that time, were influenced by the political views that predominated African American culture. Weston’s father, in particular, felt a strong connection to his African heritage and instilled the concept of pan-Africanism and the writings of Marcus Garvey firmly into Randy Weston’s consciousness.

Werner December 2013 Major Subject: Anthropology Copyright 2013 Catharina Laporte ABSTRACT Religious behavior varies greatly both with-in cultures and cross-culturally. Throughout history, scientific scholars of religion have debated the definition, function, or lack of function for religious behavior. The question remains: why doesn’t one set of beliefs suit everybody and every culture? Using mixed methods, the theoretical logic of Multi-Level Selection hypothesis (MLS) which has foundations in neo-evolutionary theory, and data collected during nearly two years of field work in Macaé Brazil, this study asserts that religious variability exists because of the historic and dynamic relationship between the individual, the family, the (religious) group and other groups. By re-representing a nuanced version of Elman Service’s sociopolitical typologies together with theorized categories of religion proposed by J.G. Frazer, Anthony C. Wallace and Max Weber, in a multi-level nested hierarchy, I argue that variability in religious behavior sustains because it provides adaptive advantages and solutions to group living on multiple levels. These adaptive strategies may be more important or less important depending on the time, place, individual or group. MLS potentially serves to unify the various functional theories of religion and can be used to analyze why some religions, at different points in history, may attract and retain more adherents by reacting to the environment and providing a dynamic balance between what the individual needs and what the group needs.

A supernatural cause is attributed to all events in life, whether the life of the individual or of the society. There are many methods of divination by which humankind has tried, over millenia, to see into the future and to discover the will of the gods. Although some few methods have become popular around the world-Tarot cards and astrology, for example-most people are unaware of the wide diversity of systems in existence and certainly have only a vague idea of the types found in Africa. African divinatory practices are .remarkably varied and have traditionally embodied African spirituality in everyday life. We have tried to bring together some of the previously widely scattered information on African divination. With the continuing Western interest in all forms of fortune-telling, this constitutes a rich, virtually untapped vein of material, and one that-even apart from its interest to the occultist-should be preserved. A great deal of the religio-magical practices found throughout the Ameri- cas, among the descendants of the African slaves, remains very similar to the African Yoruba system. In the New World, individual peoples’ beliefs and meth- ods of divining suffered a blending as the Africans were mixed and then di- vided, to the point where the legends and myths found extended life in the Voodoo of Haiti, the Santeria of Cuba, and the Macumba, Candomb~, Umbanda, and CLuimbanda of Brazil and other parts of South America.
