  • “Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago.

  • Anything Phonographic by Steve Ramm
Anything Phonographic by Steve Ramm early every one of my December columns, in the almost 25 years that I’ve been writing N this column, has been a Holiday Gift Wish List Guide, with things my readers would want for Christmas/Hanukkah. This time it will not be as formal but virtually every item I review here should be on someone’s list. So let’s get started with some new items. News on the ‘Net – In October, 90 former employees of RCA Victor’s Camden, NJ plant gathered together in “Nipper’s Pub” in the old Building 17 (now an apartment building) to reminisce. You can read about it here: http://tinyurl.com/jpmv54h. The Phonographic Monthly Review the first consumer magazine about the appreciation (and collecting) of records was founded in 1926 by Axel B. Johnson. It was published until March 1932. Thanks to the work of the National Recording Preservation Board, you can now read every issue online at www.archive.org or direct at http://tinyurl.com/ht76nx9. The Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC), which will be holding it’s 51st Annual Conference in San Antonio, TX (where blues legend Robert Johnson made his first recordings) on May 10-13,2017, has recently posted full videos from their New York Chapter presentations on the ARSC YouTube channel. While some are aimed at classical music collectors, the most recent is Dennis Rooney’s talk on crooner Russ Columbo. You can find these at: https://www.youtube.com/user/arscaudio. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal on “antiquing” prominently featured the photo I’m including here of dual-horn phonograph.

  • HARD, HARD RELIGION: FAITH and CLASS in the NEW SOUTH By
HARD, HARD RELIGION: FAITH AND CLASS IN THE NEW SOUTH by JOHN HERBERT HAYES (Under the Direction of KATHLEEN CLARK) ABSTRACT “Hard, Hard Religion: Faith and Class in the New South” argues that a fervent people’s religious culture permeated the rural New South, and was a central element in the persona and music of an iconic figure from that world, Johnny Cash. A distinct religious sensibility—a regional “popular religion,” or what one white farm laborer called “hard, hard religion”—constituted a central medium through which the rural poor, white and black, articulated and engaged with the hard everyday forces in their lives in the New South: confinement, marginality, injustice, and ridicule. This sensibility was not a static “old time religion,” an “otherworldly” compensation, or a psychological coping mechanism. Indeed, through the mediated forms of “folk” music and early “hillbilly” and “race” records, this popular religion has recurrently attracted outsiders for its complex engagement with modernity and its discontents, even though the dominant categories of historical analysis, those that conceptualize southern power relations and religion solely through the lens of race, have obscured it. I focus in on the persona and music of Johnny Cash, demonstrating that a principal aspect of his durable popular appeal was his creative engagement with the “hard, hard religion” he absorbed in his youth, in a rural community in Arkansas in the 1930s and ‘40s. In wrestling with the meaning of his inherited faith, Cash sang basic themes from the older culture—an abiding sense of evil and of perpetual struggle against darkness, a via negativa as the path to God, a feeling of mystery and the stark limit in life, and a democratic spirit of favoritism for the lowly—into American popular culture from the 1960s until his death in 2003.
